Background: The efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) depends on the tumor immune microenvironment (TIME), with a preference for a T cell-inflamed TIME. However, challenges in tissue-based assessments via biopsies have triggered the exploration of non-invasive alternatives, such as radiomics, to comprehensively evaluate TIME across diverse cancers. To address these challenges, we develop an ICI response signature by integrating radiomics with T cell-inflamed gene-expression profiles.

The urothelium and lamina propria (LP) contribute to sensations of bladder fullness by releasing multiple mediators, including prostaglandins (PGs) and adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP), that activate or modulate functions of cells throughout the bladder wall. Mediators that are simultaneously released in response to bladder distention likely influence each other's mechanisms of release and action. This study investigated whether PGs could alter the extracellular hydrolysis of ATP by soluble nucleotidases (s-NTDs) released in the LP of nondistended or distended bladders.

Article Synopsis
  • Thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) are ideal for 3D printing via fused deposition modeling (FDM) when flexibility and strength are needed, but predicting how they deform can be challenging due to varying printing parameters.
  • This study investigates the development of accurate hyperelastic constitutive models for TPU parts created with different infill geometries and nozzle temperatures, using six groups of uniaxial tensile specimens.
  • The researchers found that a third-order Mooney-Rivlin model effectively represents the behavior of these TPU parts, and their approach was validated through experimental results and finite element analysis (FEA), showing minimal errors.

Stereoactive Lone-Pair Manipulation for High Thermoelectric Performance of GeSe-Based Compounds.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2025

Hubei Longzhong Laboratory, Wuhan University of Technology, Xiangyang Demonstration Zone, Xiangyang 441000, China.

Materials with high crystallographic symmetry are supposed to be good thermoelectrics because they have high valley degeneracy () and superb carrier mobility (μ). Binary GeSe crystallizes in a low-symmetry orthorhombic structure accompanying the stereoactive 4s lone pairs of Ge. Herein, we rationally modify GeSe into a high-symmetry rhombohedral structure by alloying with GeTe based on the valence-shell electron-pair repulsion theory.

The 1831 CE mystery eruption identified as Zavaritskii caldera, Simushir Island (Kurils).

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

January 2025

Archaeology & Palaeoecology, School of Natural and Built Environment, Queen's University, Belfast BT9 3AZ, United Kingdom.

Polar ice cores and historical records evidence a large-magnitude volcanic eruption in 1831 CE. This event was estimated to have injected ~13 Tg of sulfur (S) into the stratosphere which produced various atmospheric optical phenomena and led to Northern Hemisphere climate cooling of ~1 °C. The source of this volcanic event remains enigmatic, though one hypothesis has linked it to a modest phreatomagmatic eruption of Ferdinandea in the Strait of Sicily, which may have emitted additional S through magma-crust interactions with evaporite rocks.

Designing dicationic organic salts and ionic liquids exhibiting high fluorescence in the solid state.

J Ion Liq

December 2024

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Nevada Las Vegas, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway, Box 454003, Las Vegas, NV 89154, United States.

Dicationic ionic liquids (DILs) are emerging as a powerful, next-generation approach to designing applied ILs because of their superior physicochemical properties as well as their diverse complexity and tunability for task specific applications. DILs are scarce in the literature compared to monocationic ILs (MILs), and one of their main issues is their expected tendency to possess higher melting temperatures. A series of 1,4-bis[2-(4-pyridyl)ethenyl] benzene and 1,4-bis[2-(2-pyridyl)ethenyl]benzene quaternary salts (Q-BPEBs) with different counterions (bromide, tosylate, and triflimide) and carbon chain lengths (C, C, and C) have been synthesized for their potential as DILs with strong photoluminescent properties in the solid state.
