Introduction: The management to reduce risk of thromboembolic complications in polycythemia vera and essential thrombocythemia are well established, but for other conditions with elevated hemoglobin, hematocrit, or platelets there are no consensus regarding treatment and follow up.

Aims: To assess frequency of elevated blood values in patients with thromboembolic event, how many of these should be investigated further regarding myeloproliferative neoplasm and if the risk of recurrent event is depending on underlying condition.

Methods: Retrospective cohort study of 3931 adult patients in the county of Norrbotten, Sweden, with thromboembolism during 2017 and 2018.

Background: Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) has been associated with several upper- and lower-airway diseases. Still, the role of nocturnal gastroesophageal reflux (nGER) in chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is not fully established.

Background: Induction of labor is increasing worldwide, and some countries have started to introduce outpatient induction in low-risk women.

Objectives: To assess current knowledge concerning the safety, efficacy, women's experience, and economic costs of outpatient induction compared with inpatient induction.

Search Strategy: Multiple databases were last searched on October 19, 2021.

Paediatric on-call consultants' learning within and beyond the objectives of a coherent CPD program.

Background: Evaluations, using questionnaires, of a two-year long CPD program for on-call consultant paediatricians, showed that the overall objective of the program was largely met. We stipulate that the coherency of the CPD program contributed to the learning. To gains a deeper understanding of the participants learning within and beyond the overall objectives of the program, we decided to conduct an interview study enrolling participants from the first two CPD courses.

Background: When nurses enter employment in contemporary hospital settings, they face multiple learning challenges. Organisational prerequisites that have been identified to affect their ability to learn to provide high-quality care are related to staffing turnovers, large patient groups and a lack of experienced staff to support their learning.

Background: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is associated with generalised airway inflammation. Few studies have addressed the relationship between CRS and chronic bronchitis (CB).

Introduction: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease leading to the destruction of the insulin-producing beta cells resulting in insulin deficiency and hyperglycaemic. Today, no approved therapy exists to halt this detrimental immunologic process. Accuracy of transvaginal ultrasound versus MRI in the PreOperative Diagnostics of low-grade Endometrial Cancer (PODEC) study: a prospective multicentre study.

Aim: To investigate if the diagnostic accuracy of transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS) performed by gynaecologists is sufficient for preoperative assessment of low-grade endometrial cancer (EC) compared to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Materials And Methods: MRI and TVUS performed by gynaecologists were assessed at the participating centres. The MRI examinations were interpreted by two radiologists at the tertiary centre.

Background: The anatomic double-bundle (DB) technique is purported to be a superior technique due to its mimicking of the double-stranded anatomic formation of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Previous studies with 2-, 5- and 10-year follow-up are conflicted as to whether this technique is superior to the previous gold standard method of ACL reconstruction, the anatomic single-bundle (SB) reconstruction.

Purpose/hypothesis: The aim of this prospective randomized study was to compare the outcomes of the anatomic DB technique and anatomic SB technique with independent drilling at 10 years after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction.

Purpose: Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) is a first-line intervention for glaucoma, with the aim to reduce the intraocular pressure (IOP). Topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are sometimes prescribed after SLT. However, it has been proposed that such treatment may either increase or reduce SLT efficacy.

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on long-term trends in the prevalence of diabetic ketoacidosis at diagnosis of paediatric type 1 diabetes: an international multicentre study based on data from 13 national diabetes registries.

Background: An increased prevalence of diabetic ketoacidosis at diagnosis of type 1 diabetes in children was observed in various diabetes centres worldwide during the COVID-19 pandemic. We aimed to evaluate trends in the prevalence of diabetic ketoacidosis at diagnosis of paediatric type 1 diabetes before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to identify potential predictors of changes in diabetic ketoacidosis prevalence during the pandemic.

Methods: For this international multicentre study, we used data from 13 national diabetes registries (Australia, Austria, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Norway, Slovenia, Sweden, USA [Colorado], and Wales).

New research shows that the prevalence of neurodevelopmental disorders, such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), is increased in children and adolescents as well as in adults with chronic pain, compared to those without chronic pain. Children and adolescents with ADHD also have an increased incidence of various physical conditions associated with pain, and they more frequently suffer from inflammatory diseases. Moreover, parents of children with ADHD can often suffer from pain conditions.

Group B streptococcus - a pathogen not restricted to neonates.

Objectives: This was a retropective study of invasive group B streptococcal (GBS) infections isolated from blood, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), synovial fluid, peritoneal fluid, pleural fluid, pericardial fluid and corpus vitreum in a defined region in southwest Sweden over a 14-year period.

Design: Information on all invasive GBS infections was obtained from all four bacteriological laboratories in the region, with data obtained from individual patient records.

Results: GBS was isolated from normally sterile body fluids in 1244 samples (579 from females and 665 from males) from 1101 patients.

Background: Historically, the incidence of cardiovascular disease and mortality in persons with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) has been increased compared to the general population. Contemporary studies on time trends of mortality and cardiovascular disease are sparse.

Methods: In this observational study, T1D persons were identified in the Swedish National Diabetes Registry (=45,575) and compared with matched controls from the general population (=220,141).

Background: An intact umbilical cord allows the physiological transfusion of blood from the placenta to the neonate, which reduces infant iron deficiency and is associated with improved development during early childhood. The implementation of delayed cord clamping practice varies depending on mode of delivery, as well as gestational age and neonatal compromise. Familial Mediterranean fever may mimic acute appendicitis in children.

Acute appendicitis is the most common surgical emergency in children. Diagnosis and management are often straightforward. However, familial Mediterranean fever is an important condition to consider in the assessment of children with acute abdominal pain, particularly in children with an origin in eastern Mediterranean basin where the disease is common.

The global emergence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli (ESBL-E. coli), mainly causing urinary tract infections (UTI), is of great concern. Almost one third of patients with UTI, develop recurrent UTI (RUTI).
