Background: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is an aggressive therapy-resistant head and neck cancer with a high frequency of local recurrences and distant metastases. Activation of the MYB gene, encoding an oncogenic master transcription factor, is the key genomic hallmark of ACC and a potential therapeutic target. Here, we have investigated the clinical significance of alternative MYB promoter (MYB TSS2) activation in primary ACCs.

Determining the effect of frailty on survival in advanced ovarian cancer: study protocol for a prospective multicentre national cohort study (FOLERO).

Acta Oncol

February 2025

Department of Women´s and Children´s Health, Division of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Karolinska Institutet, and Department of Pelvic Cancer, Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden.

Background And Purpose: There is an urgent need to improve patient-selection to surgical treatment in advanced ovarian cancer as our results showed that cytoreductive surgery was without effect or even detrimental in a yet unknown subgroup of women. With an ageing population, 30% of women with advanced ovarian cancer in Sweden are >75 years. Nevertheless, there are no recommendations on patient-selection, albeit treating an unselected population in a public and centralized health care setting.

Background: Remote patient monitoring implies continuous follow-up of health-related parameters of patients outside healthcare facilities. Patients share health-related data with their healthcare unit and obtain feedback (which may be automatically generated if data are within a predefined range). The goals of remote patient monitoring are improvements for patients and reduced healthcare costs.

Introduction: Type 1 diabetes involves immune-mediated destruction of insulin-producing beta cells, with eosinophils potentially playing a significant role. Recent studies suggest that leukotriene inhibition might influence this process. This case report presents a novel observation of montelukast, a leukotriene receptor antagonist, reducing insulin requirements in a patient with Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA).

Background: New digital learning environments have transformed medical education and training, allowing students and teachers to engage in synchronous, real-time interactions and asynchronous learning activities online. Despite extensive research on the role of digital technologies in education, understanding the interplay between digital technology, work, and learning, especially in complex fields like healthcare, remains a challenge.

Objective: The objective of this study is to examine resident physicians' perceptions and experiences of using a digital learning environment as part of their specialist medical training.

Exercise-based telerehabilitation in chronic low back pain - a scoping review.

BMC Musculoskelet Disord

November 2024

Institute of Clinical Science, Department of Orthopaedics, Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Gothenburg, Sweden.

Article Synopsis
  • Low back pain is a significant global health issue, and physiotherapy with exercises is the preferred first-line treatment; however, there's been a rise in using digital tools like telerehabilitation.
  • A systematic literature review from January 2017 to January 2024 identified 28 studies focusing on exercise-based telerehabilitation for adults with chronic low back pain, revealing diverse technological approaches and outcome measures.
  • The findings indicate that telerehabilitation usually operates asynchronously via apps, showing similar improvements in pain and physical function compared to traditional therapy, but emphasize the need for more research on synchronous and group-based interventions.

Background And Objective: Our objective was to assess whether GeneXpert BC can be used as a triage test to exclude urinary bladder cancer (UBC) for patients with macroscopic hematuria.

Methods: We conducted a prospective study that include consecutive patients being evaluated for macroscopic hematuria between September 2020 and December 2022. Before cystoscopy, study participants provided a voided urine sample for GeneXpert BC analysis according to a case-control design with an emphasis on UBC detection.

Background: The estimated prognos of a patient might influence the expected benefit/risk ratio of different interventions. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) score as an independent predictor of short-, mid- and long-term mortality in critically ill older adults (aged ≥ 70) admitted to the emergency department (ED).

Methods: This is a retrospective, single-center, observational study, involving critically ill older adults, recruited consecutively in an ED.

Background: Biocomposite screws reportedly provide equivalent graft fixation in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) to metallic screws while simplifying subsequent imaging and surgery. One purported complication of biocomposite screws is paradoxical tunnel widening. Previous studies on beta-tricalcium phosphate screws have only reported outcomes at short- and midterm follow-up.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the glycemic response of critically ill COVID-19 patients compared to non-COVID-19 ICU patients, focusing on insulin requirements, glycemic control, and mortality rates.
  • It found that COVID-19 patients had higher insulin-to-carbohydrate ratios (ICR) and greater hypoglycemia prevalence, regardless of their diabetes status.
  • The research concluded that higher daily insulin requirements were linked to increased 90-day mortality risk, indicating significant impacts of COVID-19 on glycemic management in ICU settings.

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic Th2-mediated inflammatory disease of the esophagus driven by dietary or inhalant allergens which if left untreated, leads to fibrosis and poor esophageal function. Although the inflammation in the esophagus is dominated by eosinophils, there are also elevated levels of T and B cells. Blood samples from ten patients with EoE before and after treatment with orodispersible budesonide and 10 healthy controls were compared using cytometry by time-of-flight.
