Projection neurons in the anteriolateral part of entorhinal cortex layer II are the predominant cortical site for hyper-phosphorylation of tau and formation of neurofibrillary tangles in prodromal Alzheimer's disease. A majority of layer II projection neurons in anteriolateral entorhinal cortex are unique among cortical excitatory neurons by expressing the protein reelin. In prodromal Alzheimer's disease, these reelin-expressing neurons are prone to accumulate intracellular amyloid-β, which is mimicked in a rat model that replicates the spatio-temporal cascade of the disease.

Aim: To investigate the association of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and substance use disorders (alcohol and illicit drug use disorders), specifically by gender, in a large longitudinal non-clinical population study.
Methods: Data from 8199 adolescents, first assessed for ACE (2006-2008), were linked with subsequent data from the Norwegian Patient Register to obtain diagnoses of a substance use disorder in adulthood (after 12-14 years' follow-up in March 2020). This study used logistic regression analysis to assess the associations between ACEs and substance use disorders with respect to gender.

Paenibacillus polymyxa is a Gram-positive soil bacterium known for producing a wide range of exopolysaccharides. However, due to the biopolymer's complexity, structural elucidation has so far been inconclusive. Combinatorial knock-outs of glycosyltransferases were generated in order to separate distinct polysaccharides produced by P.

The metabolism of all living organisms is dependent on temperature, and therefore, having a good method to predict temperature effects at a system level is of importance. A recently developed Bayesian computational framework for enzyme and temperature constrained genome-scale models (etcGEM) predicts the temperature dependence of an organism's metabolic network from thermodynamic properties of the metabolic enzymes, markedly expanding the scope and applicability of constraint-based metabolic modelling. Here, we show that the Bayesian calculation method for inferring parameters for an etcGEM is unstable and unable to estimate the posterior distribution.

Neural inhibition is stated as the main source for bilateral force deficit. Based on differences in bilateral neural organization, there might be a pronounced neural inhibition for proximal compared to distal effectors.

Alginate-based hydrogels with tunable mechanical properties are developed by chemical methylation of the polysaccharide backbone, which was performed either in homogeneous phase (in solution) or in heterogeneous phase (on hydrogels). Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC-MALS) analyses of methylated alginates allow to identify the presence and location of methyl groups on the polysaccharide, and to investigate the influence of methylation on the stiffness of the polymer chains. The methylated polysaccharides are employed for the manufacturing of calcium-reticulated hydrogels for cell growth in 3D.

Objective: To evaluate the predictive value of biomarkers of inflammation like phagocyte-related S100 proteins and a panel of inflammatory cytokines in order to differentiate the child with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) from juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA).
Study Design: In this cross-sectional study, we measured S100A9, S100A12, and 14 cytokines in serum from children with ALL (n = 150, including 27 with arthropathy) and JIA (n = 236). We constructed predictive models computing areas under the curve (AUC) as well as predicted probabilities in order to differentiate ALL from JIA.

The mannuronan C-5 epimerases catalyze epimerization of β-d-mannuronic acid to α-l-guluronic acid in alginate polymers. The seven extracellular epimerases (AvAlgE1-7) are calcium-dependent, and calcium is essential for the structural integrity of their carbohydrate binding R-modules. Ca is also found in the crystal structures of the A-modules, where it is suggested to play a structural role.

In recent years, the drawbacks of plastics have become evident, with plastic pollution becoming a major environmental issue. There is an urgent need to find solutions to efficiently manage plastic waste by using novel recycling methods. Biocatalytic recycling of plastics by using enzyme-catalyzed hydrolysis is one such solution that has gained interest, in particular for recycling poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET).

Purpose: The development of advanced estimators for intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) modeling is often motivated by a desire to produce smoother parameter maps than least squares (LSQ). Deep neural networks show promise to this end, yet performance may be conditional on a myriad of choices regarding the learning strategy. In this work, we have explored potential impacts of key training features in unsupervised and supervised learning for IVIM model fitting.

There are many unanswered questions regarding responses to proinflammatory signals in intestinal epithelial cells (IECs). For example, chemokines secreted by IECs upon external stimuli play multifunctional roles in both homeostasis and during inflammation. Several chemokines are upregulated during active inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which is associated with an increased influx of immune cells into the gut mucosa.

Improvements in the thermomechanical properties of epoxy upon inclusion of well-dispersed SiO nanoparticles have been demonstrated both experimentally and through molecular dynamics simulations. The SiO was represented by two different dispersion models: dispersed individual molecules and as spherical nanoparticles. The calculated thermodynamic and thermomechanical properties were consistent with experimental results.

Alginate is a polysaccharide consisting of β-D-mannuronate (M) and α-L-guluronate (G) produced by brown algae and some bacterial species. Alginate has a wide range of industrial and pharmaceutical applications, owing mainly to its gelling and viscosifying properties. Alginates with high G content are considered more valuable since the G residues can form hydrogels with divalent cations.

The cancer syndrome polymerase proofreading-associated polyposis results from germline mutations in the POLE and POLD1 genes. Mutations in the exonuclease domain of these genes are associated with hyper- and ultra-mutated tumors with a predominance of base substitutions resulting from faulty proofreading during DNA replication. When a new variant is identified by gene testing of POLE and POLD1, it is important to verify whether the variant is associated with PPAP or not, to guide genetic counseling of mutation carriers.
