Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine (INM-1), Research Centre Jülich, 52425 Jülich, Germany; C. & O. Vogt Institute for Brain Research, Heinrich-Heine-University, 40225 Dusseldorf, Germany.

Neurotransmitter receptors are key molecules in signal transmission in the adult brain, and their precise spatial and temporal balance expressions also play a critical role in normal brain development. However, the specific balance expression of multiple receptors during hippocampal development is not well characterized. In this study, we used quantitative in vivo receptor autoradiography to measure the distributions and densities of 18 neurotransmitter receptor types in the mouse hippocampal complex at postnatal day 7, and compared them with the expressions of their corresponding encoding genes.

Department of Material Science and Engineering, NTNU Norwegian University of Science and Technology, N-7491 Trondheim, Norway.

Article Synopsis
  • * Using density functional theory, the research examines Bi vacancies and Bi-O vacancy pairs in BiFeO (BFO) under different levels of (111) epitaxial strain, revealing that compressive strain lowers vacancy formation energy while tensile strain raises it.
  • * The study finds that out-of-plane vacancy pairs are more stable under both types of strain, with significant energy reductions, and discusses how these results relate to Bi stoichiometry and conductivity in thin films.

Recently, it has been hypothesized that alpha-synuclein protein strain morphology may be associated with clinical subtypes of alpha-synucleinopathies, like Parkinson's disease and multiple system atrophy. However, direct evidence is lacking due to the caveat of conformation-specific characterization of protein strain morphology. Here we present a new cell model based in vitro method to explore various alpha-synuclein (αsyn) aggregate morphotypes.

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD), its precursors, and its derivatives (collectively NADome) play a crucial role in cellular processes and maintain redox homeostasis. Understanding the dynamics of these metabolic pools and redox reactions can provide valuable insights into metabolic functions, especially cellular regulation and stress response mechanisms. The accurate quantification of these metabolites is challenging due to the interconversion between the redox forms.

The crosstalk between the cells and the extracellular matrix (ECM) is bidirectional and consists of a pushing/pulling stretch exerted by the cells and a mechanical resistance counteracted by the surrounding microenvironment. It is widely recognized that the stiffness of the ECM, its viscoelasticity, and its overall deformation are the most important traits influencing the response of the cells. Here these three parameters are combined into a concept of elastic energy, which in biological terms represents the mechanical feedback that cells perceive when the ECM is deformed.

Department of Psychology, Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences, Leipzig 04103, Germany; Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience, the Egil and Pauline Braathen and Fred Kavli Centre for Cortical Microcircuits, Jebsen Centre for Alzheimer's Disease, NTNU Norwegian University of Science and Technology, 7034 Trondheim, Norway.

The wide array of cognitive functions associated with the hippocampus is supported through interactions with the cerebral cortex. However, most of the direct cortical input to the hippocampus originates in the entorhinal cortex, forming the hippocampal-entorhinal system. In humans, the role of the entorhinal cortex in mediating hippocampal-cortical interactions remains unknown.

Unlabelled: Formaldehyde is a known toxic compound, and functional formaldehyde detoxification is crucial for the survival of all living cells. Such detoxification systems are of particular importance for methylotrophic microorganisms that rely on formaldehyde as a central metabolite in their one-carbon metabolism. Understanding formaldehyde dissimilation pathways in non-methylotrophic industrial microorganisms is necessary for ongoing research aiming at engineering methylotrophy into their metabolism (synthetic methylotrophy).

Perioperative Detection of Cerebral Fat Emboli From Bone Using High-Frequency Doppler Ultrasound.

Ultrasound Med Biol

January 2025

Department of Circulation and Medical Imaging (ISB), NTNU - Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, Norway; Children's Clinic, St. Olavs Hospital, Trondheim University Hospital, Trondheim, Norway.

Objective: Fat embolism syndrome and cerebral fat emboli are rare yet serious conditions arising from systemic distribution of bone marrow emboli. Emboli are known to produce high-intensity transient signals (HITS) in a Doppler signal. We hypothesized that both intramedullary nailing in pigs and median sternotomy in human infants cause bone marrow release, that some of these cause cerebral emboli, and that these were detectable by a new cerebral doppler ultrasound monitoring system (NeoDoppler).

Article Synopsis
  • Many studies rely on a single blood sample to assess long-term exposure to substances like PFOA, but this approach may not accurately reflect true long-term exposure levels.
  • A simulation study was conducted to evaluate how well these single samples represent over-time PFOA concentrations, comparing misclassification rates between short and long-term exposure data.
  • For the general population in Norway, while single baseline samples often aligned closely with repeated samples taken up to 13 years apart, they were less reliable for representing average exposure across longer periods, especially during times of significant PFOA level changes.

The nearest taxon index (NTI) and beta nearest taxon index (βNTI) are popular metrics used to infer community assembly in a variety of ecosystems. However, the dependence these metrics have on the underlying phylogenetic tree is often overlooked and can potentially lead to erroneous conclusions. In this paper, we investigated how misclassified sequences in the phylogenetic tree and reduction of the metacommunity richness affect estimates of the assembly processes.

Warming and trophic structure tightly control phytoplankton bloom amplitude, composition and succession.

PLoS One

October 2024

MARBEC (Marine Biodiversity, Exploitation and Conservation), Univ Montpellier, CNRS, Ifremer, IRD, Montpellier, France.

To better identify the responses of phytoplankton blooms to warming conditions as expected in a climate change context, an in situ mesocosm experiment was carried out in a coastal Mediterranean lagoon (Thau Lagoon, South of France) in April 2018. Our objective was to assess both the direct and indirect effects of warming on phytoplankton, particularly those mediated by top-down control. Four treatments were applied: 1) natural planktonic community with ambient water temperature (C); 2) natural planktonic community at +3°C elevated temperature (T); 3) exclusion of larger zooplankton (> 200 μm; mesozooplankton) leaving microzooplankton predominant with ambient water temperature (MicroZ); and 4) exclusion of larger zooplankton (> 200 μm; mesozooplankton) at +3°C elevated temperature (TMicroZ).

October 2024

Université de Bordeaux, CNRS, Bordeaux INP, Laboratoire de chimie des polymères organiques (LCPO), UMR 5629, F-33600 Pessac, France.

Article Synopsis
  • Alginates are marine polysaccharides that can bind calcium ions and form hydrogels, making them useful in the biomedical field, though their production as nanogels is difficult.
  • The study introduces a self-assembly method to create stable alginate-based nanogels by combining guluronate blocks from alginates with dextran chains, resulting in micellar structures in the presence of divalent ions.
  • Using techniques like dynamic light scattering and small-angle neutron scattering, researchers found that these micelles have a consistent size of about 8 nm and can exchange ions, demonstrating dynamic behavior even in the presence of agents that can disassemble them.

In recent years, many countries have significantly increased military spending, mainly due to geopolitical instability in several regions and the potential risk of armed conflicts spreading worldwide. In this context, understanding the nutritional needs of soldiers in different climates (warm, cold and high altitude) is important and directly impacts the performance and health of soldiers, especially in extreme environments. The amount of liquids, calories, and macro- and micronutrients contained in military rations must be determined considering the type of exercise, duration and environment.
