A search for dark matter in the form of strongly interacting massive particles (SIMPs) using the CMS detector at the LHC is presented. The SIMPs would be produced in pairs that manifest themselves as pairs of jets without tracks. The energy fraction of jets carried by charged particles is used as a key discriminator to suppress efficiently the large multijet background, and the remaining background is estimated directly from data.

Measurements of the inclusive and differential fiducial cross sections of the Higgs boson are presented, using the τ lepton decay channel. The differential cross sections are measured as functions of the Higgs boson transverse momentum, jet multiplicity, and transverse momentum of the leading jet in the event, if any. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13  TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138  fb^{-1}.

With the establishment of the CRISPR-Cas9 molecular tool as a DNA editing system in 2012, the handling of gene editing experiments was strongly facilitated pushing reverse genetics approaches forward in many organisms. These new gene editing technologies also drastically increased the possibilities for design-driven synthetic biology. Here, we describe a protocol for gene editing in the green algae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii using preassembled CRISPR-Cas9 ribonucleoproteins.

Recently, a breakthrough has been achieved in laser-spectroscopic studies of short-lived radioactive compounds with the first measurements of the radium monofluoride molecule (RaF) UV/vis spectra. We report results from high-accuracy ab initio calculations of the RaF electronic structure for ground and low-lying excited electronic states. Two different methods agree excellently with experimental excitation energies from the electronic ground state to the Π and Π states, but lead consistently and unambiguously to deviations from experimental-based adiabatic transition energy estimates for the Σ excited electronic state, and show that more measurements are needed to clarify spectroscopic assignment of the Δ state.

^{159}Dy Electron-Capture: A New Candidate for Neutrino Mass Determination.

Phys Rev Lett

December 2021

Department of Physics, University of Jyväskylä, P.O. Box 35, FI-40014 Jyväskylä, Finland.

The ground state to ground state electron-capture Q value of ^{159}Dy (3/2^{-}) has been measured directly using the double Penning trap mass spectrometer JYFLTRAP. A value of 364.73(19) keV was obtained from a measurement of the cyclotron frequency ratio of the decay parent ^{159}Dy and the decay daughter ^{159}Tb ions using the novel phase-imaging ion-cyclotron resonance technique.

According to first-principle lattice QCD calculations, the transition from quark-gluon plasma to hadronic matter is a smooth crossover in the region μ_{B}≤T_{c}. In this range the ratio, C_{6}/C_{2}, of net-baryon distributions are predicted to be negative. In this Letter, we report the first measurement of the midrapidity net-proton C_{6}/C_{2} from 27, 54.

Ultra-intense MeV photon and neutron beams are indispensable tools in many research fields such as nuclear, atomic and material science as well as in medical and biophysical applications. For applications in laboratory nuclear astrophysics, neutron fluxes in excess of 10 n/(cm s) are required. Such ultra-high fluxes are unattainable with existing conventional reactor- and accelerator-based facilities.

Is the existence of a J/ψJ/ψ bound state plausible?

Sci Bull (Beijing)

December 2021

CAS Key Laboratory of Theoretical Physics, Institute of Theoretical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100190, China; School of Physical Sciences, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100049, China; School of Physics, Central South University, Changsha 410083, China.

In a recent measurement LHCb reported pronounced structures in the J/ψJ/ψ spectrum. One of the various possible explanations of those is that they emerge from non-perturbative interactions of vector charmonia. It is thus important to understand whether it is possible to form a bound state of two charmonia interacting through the exchange of gluons, which hadronise into two pions at the longest distance.

-2-Amino-4-aryl-5-benzoyl-4,5-dihydrothiophene-3-carbonitriles were prepared either by the reaction of 3-aryl-2-cyanothioacrylamides with α-thiocyanatoacetophenone or by the Michael-type addition of cyanothioacetamide to α-bromochalcones followed by intramolecular cyclization. The mechanism of the first reaction was studied using high-level quantum chemical calculations. Density functional theory (DFT) studies were carried out to determine the mechanism of the first reaction.
