Lithium dendrite growth has become a significant barrier to realizing high-performance all-solid-state lithium metal batteries. Herein, an effective approach is presented to address this challenge through interphase engineering by using a cross-linked polyamide (negative electrostatic potential) that is chemically anchored to the surface of LiPSCl (positive electrostatic potential). This method improves contact between electrolyte particles and strategically modifies the local electronic structure at the grain boundary.

Globally, land use change has consistently resulted in greater losses than gains in aboveground biomass (AGB). Forest fragmentation is a primary driver of biodiversity loss and the depletion of natural capital. Measuring landscape characteristics and analyzing changes in forest landscape patterns are essential for accounting for the contributions of forest ecosystems to the economy and human well-being.

Four functionalized BODIPY derivatives (BDP1 to BDP4) were synthesized and their optical properties investigated both in solution and when incorporated into a solid matrix. Recognizing the versatility of BODIPY derivatives and the increasing interest in developing new luminescent organic dyes embedded in polymers, the BODIPY derivatives were dispersed into two types of polymeric matrices: Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU), both as films and microparticles. This resulted in eight new BODIPY-doped polymer films and eight types of BODIPY-doped polymeric microparticles for use in aqueous solutions.

Domains play an essential role in determining the piezoelectric properties of polymers. The conventional method for achieving ultrafine piezoelectric domain structures for polymers is multiphase polymerization, which is not the primary choice for industrial-scale applications because of its complex synthesis and weak mechanical properties. In this study, it is demonstrated for the first time that a nanoscale domain design can be achieved in a commercially available polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) homopolymer through a simple fabrication method involving cyclic compression and rapid freezing.

Identifying high-risk patients, particularly in intensive care units (ICUs), enhances treatment and reduces severe outcomes. Since the pandemic, numerous studies have examined COVID-19 patient profiles and factors linked to increased mortality. Despite six pandemic waves, to the best of our knowledge, there is no extensive comparative analysis of patients' characteristics across these waves in Portugal.

This work describes results of a first proof of the concept of electrorefinery with a real waste obtained from a cashew nut factory, and it shows the effect of the current densities of both the anodic oxidation and electrochemically assisted separation processes on the performance of the system. Results obtained demonstrate that electrorefinery is a promising option to minimize the carbon fingerprint, worth studying for increasing the sustainability of the environmental remediation of wastes, because valuable species can be obtained from the destruction of pollutants and recovered within the same integrated process. They also point out that there is still a long way to reach an optimum solution for this technology, but it is worth the effort to be made.

CRISPR-based epigenome editing integrates the precision of CRISPR with the capability of epigenetic mark rewriting, offering a tunable and reversible gene regulation strategy without altering the DNA sequences. Various epigenome editing systems have been developed and applied in different organisms and cell types; however, the detailed information is discrete, making it challenging to evaluate the precision of different editing systems and design the optimal sgRNAs for further functional studies. Herein, we developed CRISPRepi (http://crisprepi.

Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) are regarded as a promising alternative to conventional electrolytes, combining the advantages of solid and liquid electrolytes. Leveraging the abundance and eco-friendliness of cellulose-based materials, GPEs were produced using methyl cellulose and incorporating various doping agents, either an ionic liquid (1-Butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [Pyr14][TFSI]), its polymeric ionic liquid analogue (Poly(diallyldimethylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide) [PDADMA][TFSI]), or an anionically charged backbone polymeric ionic liquid (lithium poly[(4-styrenesulfonyl)(trifluoromethyl(S-trifluoromethylsulfonylimino) sulfonyl) imide] LiP[STFSI]). The ion dynamics and molecular interactions within the GPEs were thoroughly analyzed using Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), Heteronuclear Overhauser Enhancement Spectroscopy (HOESY), and Pulsed-Field Gradient Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Diffusion (PFG-NMR).

Background And Objective: Modelling patient-specific aortic biomechanics with advanced computational techniques, such as Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI), can be crucial to provide effective decision-making indices to enhance current clinical practices. To effectively simulate Ascending Thoracic Aortic Aneurysms (ATAA), the stress-free configuration must be defined. The Zero Pressure Geometry (ZPG) and the Prestress Tensor (PT) are two of the main approaches to tackle this issue.

The realization of persistent luminescence and in particular circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) of organic radicals remains a challenge due to their sensitivity to oxygen at ambient conditions and elusive excited state chirality control. Here, it is reported that UV-irradiation on a supramolecular gel from a chiral triarylamine derivative, TPA-Ala, led to the formation of luminescent radicals with bright CPL. TPA-Ala can form an organogel in chloroform with blue emission and supramolecular chirality as demonstrated by both CD and CPL signals.

Sialic acids at the cell surface of dendritic cells (DCs) play an important immunomodulatory role, and their manipulation enhances DC maturation, leading to heightened T cell activation. Particularly, at the molecular level, the increased stability of surface MHC-I molecules in monocyte-derived DCs (MoDCs) underpins an improved DC: T cell interaction. In this study, we focused on the impact of sialic acid remodelling by treatment with Clostridium perfringens sialidase on MoDCs' phenotypic and functional characteristics.

During orthopedic surgeries, surgeons are generally exposed to prolonged periods of standing, awkward and sustained body postures, and forceful movements, which can increase the likelihood of developing work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSD). Therefore, this study proposes a protocol to measure parameters related to physical risk factors contributing to lower limb WRMSD, during orthopedic surgery procedures. The protocol development was preceded by an initial phase of understanding and specifying the context of use, followed by pre-tests in laboratory environment.
