Nearly half of the bee species can perform a fascinating stereotyped behavior to collect pollen grains by vibrating flowers, known as buzz pollination. During the floral visit, these bees mechanically transfer the vibrations produced by their thoracic indirect flight muscles to the flower anther, inducing the movement of the pollen grains and leading them to be released through a small pore or slit placed at the tip of the anther in poricidal flowers. In such flowers, pollen release is affected by the vibrational behavior of buzzing bees, primarily their duration and velocity amplitude.

Background: High-dimensional omics data integration has emerged as a prominent avenue within the healthcare industry, presenting substantial potential to improve predictive models. However, the data integration process faces several challenges, including data heterogeneity, priority sequence in which data blocks are prioritized for rendering predictive information contained in multiple blocks, assessing the flow of information from one omics level to the other and multicollinearity.

Methods: We propose the Priority-Elastic net algorithm, a hierarchical regression method extending Priority-Lasso for the binary logistic regression model by incorporating a priority order for blocks of variables while fitting Elastic-net models sequentially for each block.

Nanoparticles (NPs) have become attractive vehicles for drug delivery in cancer therapy due to their ability to accumulate in tumours and mitigate side effects. This study focuses on the production of doxorubicin (DOX)-loaded NPs comprising Poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid)-Polyethylene glycol with varying PEG proportions and the examination of their impact on drug release kinetics. DOX-loaded NPs, composed of PLGA-co-PEG with PEG contents of 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15%, were synthesized by the solvent evaporation technique, exhibited spherical morphology, and had sizes ranging from 420 nm to 690 nm.

Mechanochemical Synthesis of New Praziquantel Cocrystals: Solid-State Characterization and Solubility.

New cocrystals of praziquantel with suberic, 3-hydroxybenzoic, benzene-1,2,4,5-tetracarboxylic, trimesic, and 5-hydroxyisophthalic acids were obtained through ball milling experiments. The optimal conditions for the milling process were chosen by changing the solvent volume and the mechanical action time. Supramolecular interactions in the new cocrystals are detailed based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, confirming the expected formation of hydrogen bonds between the praziquantel carbonyl group and the carboxyl (or hydroxyl) moieties of the coformers.

The development of new Drug Delivery Systems (DDS) by incorporating microparticles within hydrogels can prolong the release rate of drugs and/or other bioactive agents. In this study, we combined gellan gum/alginate microparticles within a thermoresponsive chitosan (Ch) hydrogel with β-Glycerophosphate (β-GP), designing the system to be in the sol state at 21 °C and in the gel state at 37 °C to enable the injectability of the system. The system was in the sol state between 10 °C and 21 °C.

Living organisms use selenium mainly in the form of selenocysteine in the active site of oxidoreductases. Here, selenium's unique chemistry is believed to modulate the reaction mechanism and enhance the catalytic efficiency of specific enzymes in ways not achievable with a sulfur-containing cysteine. However, despite the fact that selenium/sulfur have different physicochemical properties, several selenoproteins have fully functional cysteine-containing homologues and some organisms do not use selenocysteine at all.

This article discusses the conditions that lead to the autonomy of scientific disciplines by analyzing the case of zoology in the nineteenth century. The specialization of knowledge and its institutionalization in higher education in the nineteenth century were important processes for the autonomy of scientific disciplines, such as zoology. The article argues that autonomy only arises after social and political power is mobilized by specific groups to acquire appropriate conceptual, physical, and institutional spaces for a discipline.
