Article Synopsis
  • Prophages significantly influence the characteristics of pathogenic bacteria, yet their ecological and evolutionary roles, particularly in bacteria linked to gastric cancer, are not well understood.
  • A comprehensive analysis of 1,011 complete clinical genomes revealed that 29.5% contain prophages, with only 32.2% being complete, and their distribution varies by geography and ancestry but not by the disease status of hosts.
  • The study uncovered mechanisms of prophage inactivation and proposed a new model for regulating the lysogenic-lytic cycle, providing a deeper understanding of how prophages impact bacterial genetics and adaptation.

Objective: The aim of the study is to identify suitable definitions and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) to assess each of the six core outcomes previously identified through the COMMA (Core Outcomes in Menopause) global consensus process relating to vasomotor symptoms: frequency, severity, distress/bother/interference, impact on sleep, satisfaction with treatment, and side effects.

Methods: A systematic review was conducted to identify relevant definitions for the outcome of side-effects and PROMs with acceptable measurement properties for the remaining five core outcomes. The consensus process, involving 36 participants from 16 countries, was conducted to review definitions and PROMs and make final recommendations for the measurement of each core outcome.

High-level MET amplification (METamp) is a primary driver in ∼1%-2% of non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLCs). Cohort B of the phase 2 VISION trial evaluates tepotinib, an oral MET inhibitor, in patients with advanced NSCLC with high-level METamp who were enrolled by liquid biopsy. While the study was halted before the enrollment of the planned 60 patients, the results of 24 enrolled patients are presented here.

Cities can host significant biological diversity. Yet, urbanisation leads to the loss of habitats, species, and functional groups. Understanding how multiple taxa respond to urbanisation globally is essential to promote and conserve biodiversity in cities.

Background: eradication rates achieved with clarithromycin-based triple therapies are declining due to antibiotic resistance, but data regarding temporal changes in efficacy with these eradication therapies are scarce.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of clarithromycin-based triple eradication regimens over time.

Design: A comprehensive literature review and time-trend analysis.

Unlabelled: Research indicates that Intolerance of Uncertainty (IU) is associated with COVID-19 emotional responses, but not necessarily with engaging in COVID-19 preventative behaviors. The current study was designed to further evaluate this discrepancy. Participants (N = 454) completed self-report forms about COVID-19 emotional responses (i.

Given the varied emotional and behavioral responses to the COVID-19 pandemic across the United States, further attention to the personal and societal influences on such responses is necessary. We investigated the predictive influence of personal political affiliation and the congruity of personal and governor political affiliation on COVID-19 emotional and behavioral responses, with specific attention to the influence of intolerance of uncertainty (IU) on emotional response. These factors were assessed in two studies of adults in the United States ( = 480,  = 272).

Recently, disease-associated variants of the gene were identified in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Here, we present the neuropathological report of a patient with the semantic variant of primary progressive aphasia with a family history of Parkinsonism, harboring a novel frameshift mutation c.187del (p.

Defining the Opioid Requirement in Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction.

J Am Acad Orthop Surg Glob Res Rev

January 2022

From the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, MA (Dr. Sayegh, Dr. Garvey, Lowenstein, and Dr. Matzkin); the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, New Brunswick, NJ (Dr. Otto); and the Trinity College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland (Martin).

Introduction: The amount and duration of opioids necessary after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) are inadequately defined. This study sought to prospectively (1) define the amount and duration of opioid consumption, (2) investigate the relationship between preoperative pain expectation and postoperative satisfaction with pain management, and (3) identify risk factors for increased opioid use after ACLR.

Methods: One hundred eight patients undergoing primary ACLR with hamstring graft were prospectively analyzed for preoperative pain expectation, using visual analog scale (VAS) rating, and postoperative satisfaction with pain management.

External validation of urinary C-C motif chemokine ligand 14 (CCL14) for prediction of persistent acute kidney injury.

Crit Care

May 2021

Department of Critical Care Medicine, Center for Critical Care Nephrology, University of Pittsburgh, 3550 Terrace St., Scaife Hall, Suite 600, Pittsburgh, PA, 15213, USA.

Background: Persistent acute kidney injury (AKI) portends worse clinical outcomes and remains a therapeutic challenge for clinicians. A recent study found that urinary C-C motif chemokine ligand 14 (CCL14) can predict the development of persistent AKI. We aimed to externally validate urinary CCL14 for the prediction of persistent AKI in critically ill patients.

Preliminary data suggest that cigarette smokers could have an increased mortality risk from the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), and that certain factors (e.g., increased age, medical comorbidities) can also increase risk of poor coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outcomes.

Purpose: The aim of the RUBY study was to evaluate novel candidate biomarkers to enable prediction of persistence of renal dysfunction as well as further understand potential mechanisms of kidney tissue damage and repair in acute kidney injury (AKI).

Methods: The RUBY study was a multi-center international prospective observational study to identify biomarkers of the persistence of stage 3 AKI as defined by the KDIGO criteria. Patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) with moderate or severe AKI (KDIGO stage 2 or 3) were enrolled.

Background: First-line therapy for advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) that lacks targetable mutations is platinum-based chemotherapy. Among patients with a tumor proportion score for programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) of 50% or greater, pembrolizumab has replaced cytotoxic chemotherapy as the first-line treatment of choice. The addition of pembrolizumab to chemotherapy resulted in significantly higher rates of response and longer progression-free survival than chemotherapy alone in a phase 2 trial.

Department of Psychology and Institute for Mental Health Research, The University of Texas at Austin, SEA 4.208, 108 E. Dean Keeton Stop A8000, Austin, TX, 78712-1043, USA.

Background: While important for substance use outcomes, knowledge about treatment attendance patterns, and their relation with clinical outcomes is limited. We examined the association between attendance patterns and smoking outcomes in a randomized, controlled smoking cessation intervention trial.

Methods: In addition to standard smoking cessation treatment, participants were randomized to 15 weeks of an exercise intervention (n=72) or an education control condition (n=64).
