African American (AA) kidney transplant recipients exhibit a higher rate of graft loss compared with other racial and ethnic populations, highlighting the need to identify causative factors. Here, in the Genomics of Chronic Allograft Rejection cohort, pretransplant blood RNA sequencing revealed a cluster of four consecutive missense single-nucelotide polymorphisms (SNPs), within the leukocyte immunoglobulin-like receptor B3 (LILRB3) gene, strongly associated with death-censored graft loss. This SNP cluster (named LILRB3-4SNPs) encodes missense mutations at amino acids 617-618 proximal to a SHP1/2 phosphatase-binding immunoreceptor tyrosine-based inhibitory motif.

Tunable superconductivity coexisting with the anomalous Hall effect in a transition metal dichalcogenide.

Nat Commun

March 2025

Laboratory for Topological Quantum Matter and Advanced Spectroscopy, Department of Physics, Princeton University, Princeton, NJ, USA.

Transition metal dichalcogenides display a high technological potential due to their wide range of electronic ground states. Here, we unveil that by tuning hydrostatic pressure P, a cascade of electronic phase transitions can be induced in the few-layer transition metal dichalcogenide 1T'-WS. As P increases, we observe the suppression of superconductivity with the concomitant emergence of an anomalous Hall effect (AHE) at GPa.

Baleen whales migrate from productive high-latitude feeding grounds to usually oligotrophic tropical and subtropical reproductive winter grounds, translocating limiting nutrients across ecosystem boundaries in their bodies. Here, we estimate the latitudinal movement of nutrients through carcasses, placentas, and urea for four species of baleen whales that exhibit clear annual migration, relying on spatial data from publicly available databases, present and past populations, and measurements of protein catabolism and other sources of nitrogen from baleen whales and other marine mammals. Migrating gray, humpback, and North Atlantic and southern right whales convey an estimated 3784 tons N yr and 46,512 tons of biomass yr to winter grounds, a flux also known as the "great whale conveyor belt"; these numbers might have been three times higher before commercial whaling.

Recombination Analysis of Geminiviruses Using Recombination Detection Program (RDP).

Methods Mol Biol

March 2025

Department of Ecology, Evolution and Natural Resources, School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick, NJ, USA.

Geminiviruses are recombination-prone, and characterizing this evolutionary process within their genomes is a frequent goal of researchers. RDP is a stand-alone Windows program combining many algorithms that detect and characterize recombination. It has been widely used by the geminivirus community (and beyond).

Systematic review of applied transportability and generalizability analyses: A landscape analysis.

Ann Epidemiol

March 2025

Core Clinical Sciences, 401-34 W. 7(th) Ave., Vancouver, BC, V5Y 1L6 Canada; Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact, McMaster University, 1280 Main Street West, Hamilton, ON, L8S 4L8 Canada. Electronic address:

Transportability and generalizability analysis are novel causal inference methods that quantitatively assess external validity. Currently, it is unclear how these analyses are applied in practice. To characterize applications and methods, we conducted a landscape analysis of applied transportability and generalizability analyses using a systematic literature search of PubMed, CINAHL and Embase supplemented with hand-searches.

Managing patients with acute myocardial infarction and concomitant intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a complex challenge requiring a delicate balance between timely reperfusion and hemorrhagic risk mitigation. This state-of-the-art review comprehensively analyzes current evidence and best practices for managing this patient population. Individualized risk assessment, utilizing validated tools such as the Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events and ICH scores, is crucial for guiding treatment decisions.

Eukaryotic phytoplankton drive a decrease in primary production in response to elevated CO in the tropical and subtropical oceans.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

March 2025

State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science, Xiamen University, Xiamen, Fujian 361102, People's Republic of China.

Ocean acidification caused by increasing anthropogenic CO is expected to impact marine phytoplankton productivity, yet the extent and even direction of these changes are not well constrained. Here, we investigate the responses of phytoplankton community composition and productivity to acidification across the western North Pacific. Consistent reductions in primary production were observed under acidified conditions in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre and the northern South China Sea, whereas no significant changes were found at the northern boundary of the subtropical gyre.

Inferring gene regulatory networks from time-series scRNA-seq data via GRANGER causal recurrent autoencoders.

Brief Bioinform

March 2025

Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences, Rowan University, 201 Mullica Hill Road, Glassboro, NJ 08028, United States.

The development of single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) technology provides valuable data resources for inferring gene regulatory networks (GRNs), enabling deeper insights into cellular mechanisms and diseases. While many methods exist for inferring GRNs from static scRNA-seq data, current approaches face challenges in accurately handling time-series scRNA-seq data due to high noise levels and data sparsity. The temporal dimension introduces additional complexity by requiring models to capture dynamic changes, increasing sensitivity to noise, and exacerbating data sparsity across time points.

Safety evaluation is important during both the pre-market clinical trials and post-market surveillance. In either a pre-market or post-market setting wherein the safety of a device is compared to that of a control device, it is desirable to identify any difference in the safety between two devices as expeditiously as possible. Here, we introduce the Bayesian hierarchical framework for the safety assessment in two-arm clinical trials, with signal detection accomplished by evaluating the effect size of each adverse event (AE) measured by odds ratio or relative risk.
