Description of hot debriefings after in-hospital cardiac arrests in an international pediatric quality improvement collaborative.

Background: The American Heart Association recommends debriefing after attempted resuscitation from in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) to improve resuscitation quality and outcomes. This is the first published study detailing the utilization, process and content of hot debriefings after pediatric IHCA.

Methods: Using prospective data from the Pediatric Resuscitation Quality Collaborative (pediRES-Q), we analyzed data from 227 arrests occurring between February 1, 2016, and August 31, 2017.

Improved survival with renal transplantation for end-stage renal disease due to granulomatosis with polyangiitis: data from the United States Renal Data System.

Background: Renal transplantation is the optimal treatment for selected patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). However, the survival benefit of renal transplantation among patients with ESRD attributed to granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) is unknown.

Methods: We identified patients from the United States Renal Data System with ESRD due to GPA (ESRD-GPA) between 1995 and 2014.

Alliance across group treatment for veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder: The role of interpersonal trauma and treatment type.

Objective: Examine initial levels and pattern of change of alliance in group treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for veterans.

Method: One hundred and seventy-eight male veterans with PTSD were recruited for this study. Participants were randomly assigned to either group cognitive behavioral therapy (GCBT) or to group present-centered therapy (GPCT).

A systematic review of randomized trials of mind-body interventions for PTSD.

Objective: To systematically review outcomes from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of mind-body treatments for PTSD.

Methods: Inclusion criteria based on guidelines for assessing risk of bias were used to evaluate articles identified through electronic literature searches.

Results: Twenty-two RCTs met inclusion standards.

Habitat risk: Use of intertidal flats by foraging red knots (Calidris canutus rufa), ruddy turnstones, (Arenaria interpres), semipalmated sandpipers (Calidris pusilla), and sanderling (Calidris alba) on Delaware Bay beaches.

Shorebirds usually forage on intertidal flats that are exposed during low tide, and roost on higher areas when the tidal flats are covered with water. During spring migration on Delaware Bay (New Jersey) shorebirds mainly forage on horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus) eggs that are concentrated at the high tide line. However, they also use other habitats for foraging.

Integration of Magnetic Bead-Based Cell Selection into Complex Isolations.

Magnetic bead-based analyte capture has emerged as a ubiquitous method in cell isolation, enabling the highly specific capture of target populations through simple magnetic manipulation. To date, no "one-size fits all" magnetic bead has been widely adopted leading to an overwhelming number of commercial beads. Ultimately, the ideal bead is one that not only facilitates cell isolation but also proves compatible with the widest range of downstream applications and analytic endpoints.

Combination Therapy With Rituximab and Cyclophosphamide for Remission Induction in ANCA Vasculitis.

Introduction: Remission induction in antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibody (ANCA) vasculitis may be complicated by slow response to treatment and toxicity from glucocorticoids. We describe outcomes with a novel remission induction regimen combining rituximab with a short course of low-dose, oral cyclophosphamide and an accelerated prednisone taper.

Methods: Patients were included in this retrospective study if they had newly diagnosed or relapsing ANCA vasculitis with a Birmingham Vasculitis Activity Score for Wegener Granulomatosis (BVAS-WG) ≥3 and received a standardized remission induction regimen.

Progressive cationic functionalization of chlorin derivatives for antimicrobial photodynamic inactivation and related vancomycin conjugates.

It is known that multiple cationic charges are required to produce broad-spectrum antimicrobial photosensitizers (PS) for photodynamic inactivation (aPDI) or photodynamic therapy of bacteria and fungi. In the present study we describe the synthesis and aPDI testing of a set of derivatives prepared from the parent pheophytin molecule with different numbers of attached side arms (1-3) each consisting of five quaternized cationic groups (pentacationic), producing the corresponding [Zn2+]pheophorbide-a-N(C2N+C1C3)5 (Zn-Phe-N5+, 5 charges), [Zn2+]chlorin e6-[N(C2N+C1C3)5]2 (Zn-Chl-N10+, 10 charges) and [Zn2+]mesochlorin e6-[N(C2N+C1C3)5]3 (Zn-mChl-N15+, 15 charges). Moreover, a conjugate between Zn-Phe-N5+ and the antibiotic vancomycin called Van-[Zn2+]-m-pheophorbide-N(C2N+C1C3)5 (Van-Zn-mPhe-N5+) was also prepared.

Relationship between food waste, diet quality, and environmental sustainability.

Improving diet quality while simultaneously reducing environmental impact is a critical focus globally. Metrics linking diet quality and sustainability have typically focused on a limited suite of indicators, and have not included food waste. To address this important research gap, we examine the relationship between food waste, diet quality, nutrient waste, and multiple measures of sustainability: use of cropland, irrigation water, pesticides, and fertilizers.

Specific Transcriptome Changes Associated with Blood Pressure Reduction in Hypertensive Patients After Relaxation Response Training.

Objective: Mind-body practices that elicit the relaxation response (RR) have been demonstrated to reduce blood pressure (BP) in essential hypertension (HTN) and may be an adjunct to antihypertensive drug therapy. However, the molecular mechanisms by which the RR reduces BP remain undefined.

Design: Genomic determinants associated with responsiveness to an 8-week RR-based mind-body intervention for lowering HTN in 13 stage 1 hypertensive patients classified as BP responders and 11 as nonresponders were identified.

Characterization of Pediatric In-Hospital Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Quality Metrics Across an International Resuscitation Collaborative.

Reducing glucocorticoid duration in ANCA-associated vasculitis: A pilot trial.

Objective: Therapeutic advances in ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV) have improved patient survival, but mortality rates remain higher than the general population. Glucocorticoids contribute to AAV morbidity and mortality. We examined whether an 8-week glucocorticoid course in combination with rituximab (RTX) would induce disease remission in patients with AAV.

A cross-country analysis of climate shocks and smallholder food insecurity.

Future climate changes will affect smallholder farmers in the developing world, posing threats to household food security. Nevertheless, there remains limited comparable evidence across multiple countries and regions regarding the global extent of climate shocks affecting smallholder food security. We examine data from 5,299 household surveys across 15 countries in Latin America, Africa and South Asia to assess the extent of climate shocks and their association with food insecurity, as well as what strategies may help buffer against climate shocks.

Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty for corneal decompensation due to iridoschisis.

Purpose: To report a case of bilateral iridoschisis with cataracts and corneal decompensation in a patient who underwent cataract extraction and superficial iridectomy followed by Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK).

Observations: A 58-year-old man with previously diagnosed iridoschisis, cataracts, and diabetes mellitus experienced progressive vision loss bilaterally due to corneal decompensation. Slit lamp examination revealed iridoschisis with iris fibrils contacting the corneal endothelium, stromal edema, and mild guttate changes bilaterally.

Brook trout distributional response to unconventional oil and gas development: Landscape context matters.

We conducted a large-scale assessment of unconventional oil and gas (UOG) development effects on brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) distribution. We compiled 2231 brook trout collection records from the Upper Susquehanna River Watershed, USA. We used boosted regression tree (BRT) analysis to predict occurrence probability at the 1:24,000 stream-segment scale as a function of natural and anthropogenic landscape and climatic attributes.

Background: Melasma is a difficult-to-treat hyperpigmentary disorder. Ablative fractional laser (AFL)-assisted delivery of topically applied drugs to varied targets in the skin has been an area of ongoing study and research.

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of fractional erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG) laser as an assisted drug delivery for enhancing topical hydroquinone (HQ) permeation into the skin of melasma patients.

A laser optical method for predicting adulteration of clover honey.

Background: The authenticity of honey is of great importance for commercial and health reasons, because adulteration of bee honey with cheaper sweetening materials is sometimes carried out for financial gain. The objectives of this study were to evaluate clover honey quality according to physicochemical characteristics, to measure light transmission through honey samples using a visible laser technique (He-Ne laser at 632.8 nm) and to predict types of adulterants of clover honey according to the transmission intensity of the laser beam through the sample.

Effect of Novel Quercetin Titanium Dioxide-Decorated Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Nanocomposite on Bacillus subtilis Biofilm Development.

The present work was targeted to design a surface against cell seeding and adhering of bacteria, . A multi-walled carbon nanotube/titanium dioxide nano-power was produced via simple mixing of carbon nanotube and titanium dioxide nanoparticles during the sol-gel process followed by heat treatment. Successfully, quercetin was immobilized on the nanocomposite via physical adsorption to form a quercetin/multi-walled carbon nanotube/titanium dioxide nanocomposite.

16-O-methylcafestol is present in ground roast Arabica coffees: Implications for authenticity testing.

High-field and low-field proton NMR spectroscopy were used to analyse lipophilic extracts from ground roast coffees. Using a sample preparation method that produced concentrated extracts, a small marker peak at 3.16 ppm was observed in 30 Arabica coffees of assured origin.

Implementation and effectiveness of a video-based debriefing programme for neonatal resuscitation.

Background: Approximately 5%-10% of newly born babies need intervention to assist transition from intra- to extrauterine life. All providers in the delivery ward are trained in neonatal resuscitation, but without clinical experience or exposure, training competency is transient with a decline in skills within a few months. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether neonatal resuscitations skills and team performance would improve after implementation of video-assisted, performance-focused debriefings.
