Significance: Both the Melbourne Rapid Fields (MRF) tablet and home versions are easy-to-use, portable, and low-cost and accurate methods of evaluating visual fields.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the clinical capabilities of the MRF perimetry test by comparing it with the Humphrey Field Analyzer (HFA), determine MRF consistency, assess the influence of refractive error, ascertain ambient illumination effects, and evaluate the consistency between the tablet and Internet Web site versions of the MRF.

Methods: Forty healthy young participants with normal visual function (33 female, 7 male; average age, 24 years) underwent two MRF office-based tablet, two HFA tests, and two MRF Web site-based tests, one in our laboratory and one at home on their own computer using the 24-2 test pattern each time.

Social change in any society entails changes in both behaviours and institutions. We model a group-structured society in which the transmission of individual behaviour occurs in parallel with the selection of group-level institutions. We consider a cooperative behaviour that generates collective benefits for groups but does not spread between individuals on its own.

Transdisciplinary Imagination: Addressing Equity and Mistreatment in Perinatal Care.

Matern Child Health J

April 2022

Women's Rights & Gender Section, Baraka Impact Finance, Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Rue Abraham-Gevray 10, 4 émé, 1201, Geneva, Switzerland.

Inequities in birth outcomes are linked to experiential and environmental exposures. There have been expanding and intersecting wicked problems of inequity, racism, and quality gaps in childbearing care during the pandemic. We describe how an intentional transdisciplinary process led to development of a novel knowledge exchange vehicle that can improve health equity in perinatal services.

The RAP (RNA-binding domain abundant in Apicomplexans) protein family has been identified in various organisms. Despite expansion of this protein family in apicomplexan parasites, their main biological functions remain unknown. In this study, we use inducible knockdown studies in the human malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, to show that two RAP proteins, PF3D7_0105200 (PfRAP01) and PF3D7_1470600 (PfRAP21), are essential for parasite survival and localize to the mitochondrion.

With the progress of nanoscience and its applications, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have become one of the most interesting nanoparticles owing to their use in different fields. However, the excessive use of AgNPs and its products may cause toxicity in both the environment and in human health. The main goal of this research is to study the toxic and photochemical effects of AgNPs against Sarcophaga argyrostoma larvae through ultrastructure, morphological change, and DNA damage.

Tai Chi and Qigong for trauma exposed populations: A systematic review.

Ment Health Phys Act

March 2022

VA Boston Healthcare System, 150 S Huntington Ave, Boston, 02130, MA, USA.

Background: Trauma exposure and posttraumatic stress are highly prevalent and comorbid with health problems. Despite the apparent systemic nature of post-traumatic stress, recommended treatments neglect trauma's deleterious effects on health. Integrative mind-body treatments for posttraumatic stress, such as Tai Chi and Qigong (TCQ), may offer a promising adjunct to first-line treatments.

Stretch marks, or striae distensae (SD), are the lesions of the dermis caused by its linear atrophy at the sites of stretching. They occur in more than 70% of pregnant women and adolescents as a result of cutaneous stretching. This study aimed at evaluating and comparing the clinical and histological efficacy of the fractional CO laser versus the long pulsed (LP) Nd: YAG laser in the treatment of striae alba.

Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) frequently cause significant distress and dysfunction, and may be unresponsive to conventional treatments. Some voice-hearers report an ability to fully control the onset and offset of their AVH, making them significantly less disruptive. Measuring and understanding these abilities may lead to novel interventions to enhance control over AVH.

Background: Survival after paediatric in-hospital cardiac arrest is worse on nights and weekends without demonstration of disparity in cardiopulmonary resuscitation quality. It is unknown whether these findings differ in children with CHD. This study aimed to determine whether cardiopulmonary resuscitation quality might explain the hypothesised worse outcomes of children with CHD during nights and weekends.

Evaluation of the diagnostic capacities for emerging arboviral diseases in the international network MediLabSecure from 2014 to 2018 - Importance of external quality assessments.

J Infect Public Health

February 2022

Institut Pasteur, Université de Paris, Environment and Infectious Risk research Unit - Laboratory for Urgent Response to Biological Threats (ERI-CIBU), Paris, France.

Article Synopsis
  • Emerging infectious diseases are a significant threat to all nations, including developed ones, necessitating improved surveillance systems to monitor rare health events.
  • The MediLabSecure project enhanced diagnostic laboratory capacities for vector-borne diseases in the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions by providing support, training, and resources from 2014 to 2018.
  • External Quality Assessments showed positive outcomes for the detection of several viruses, but ongoing efforts are needed to further strengthen diagnostic capabilities in participating laboratories.

Electrical performance of efficient quad-crescent-shaped Si nanowire solar cell.

Sci Rep

January 2022

Centre for Photonics and Smart Materials, Zewail City of Science and Technology, October Gardens, 6th of October City, 12578, Giza, Egypt.

The electrical characteristics of quad-crescent-shaped silicon nanowire (NW) solar cells (SCs) are numerically analyzed and as a result their performance optimized. The structure discussed consists of four crescents, forming a cavity that permits multiple light scattering with high trapping between the NWs. Additionally, new modes strongly coupled to the incident light are generated along the NWs.

Background: Existential distress is a significant source of suffering for patients facing life-threatening illness. Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies (PAT) are novel treatments that have shown promise in treating existential distress, but openness to providing PAT may be limited by stigma surrounding psychedelics and the paucity of education regarding their medical use. How PAT might be integrated into existing treatments for existential distress within palliative care remains underexplored.

Photodegradation is a significant weathering process that transforms spilled oil, yet, the fate, degradation rate, and molecular transformations that occur through photoinduced pathways remain relatively unknown. The molecular complexity combined with the increased polarity of photoproducts challenges conventional analytical techniques. Here, we catalogue the molecular progression of photochemical transformation products of Macondo Well Oil by negative-ion electrospray ionization (ESI) Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS).
