Sleep plays a critical role in stroke recovery. However, there are limited practices to measure sleep for individuals with stroke, thus inhibiting our ability to identify and treat poor sleep quality. Wireless, body-worn sensors offer a solution for continuous sleep monitoring.

The accurate estimation of skin and skull optical properties over a wide wavelength range of laser radiation has great importance in optogenetics and other related applications. In the present work, using the Kubelka-Munk model, finite-element solution of the diffusion equation, inverse adding-doubling (IAD), and Monte-Carlo simulation, we estimated the refractive index, absorption and scattering coefficients, penetration depth, and the optical fluence distribution in rabbit head tissues ex vivo, after dividing the heads into three types of tissues with an average thickness of skin of 1.1 mm, skull of 1 mm, and brain of 3 mm.

The present study aimed to test the efficiency of photoinduced photoacoustic streaming using 2940 nm Er: YAG laser and 980 nm diode laser agitation on smear layer removal, sealer penetration and push-out bond strength. Sixty single canaled human permanent teeth were collected for this study. Specimens were grouped into three experimental groups (20 teeth in each group), depending on the activation protocol used for final irrigation: Group I (needle agitation), group II (980nm diode laser agitation) and group III (photon induced photoacoustic streaming (PIPS) using 2940 nm Er: YAG laser.

The antimicrobial resistance crisis requires the introduction of novel antibiotics. The use of conventional broad-spectrum compounds selects for resistance in off-target pathogens and harms the microbiome. This is especially true for Mycobacterium tuberculosis, where treatment requires a 6-month course of antibiotics.

Unconventional oil and gas (UOG) extraction is increasing exponentially around the world, as new technological advances have provided cost-effective methods to extract hard-to-reach hydrocarbons. While UOG has increased the energy output of some countries, past research indicates potential impacts in nearby stream ecosystems as measured by geochemical and microbial markers. Here, we utilized a robust data set that combines 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing (DNA), metatranscriptomics (RNA), geochemistry, and trace element analyses to establish the impact of UOG activity in 21 sites in northern Pennsylvania.

Vaccine-associated enhanced respiratory disease (VAERD) is a severe complication for some respiratory infections. To investigate the potential for VAERD induction in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), we evaluate two vaccine leads utilizing a severe hamster infection model: a T helper type 1 (T1)-biased measles vaccine-derived candidate and a T2-biased alum-adjuvanted, non-stabilized spike protein. The measles virus (MeV)-derived vaccine protects the animals, but the protein lead induces VAERD, which can be alleviated by dexamethasone treatment.

Noninvasive brain stimulation/modulation is a rapidly emerging technique that has been implemented in different clinical applications. The commonly noninvasive techniques used in neurological manipulations include photobiomodulation (PBM), transcranial electrical stimulation (TES), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and ultrasound stimulation (USS). These techniques have the ability to excite, inhibit, or modulate neuronal activity in targeted brain areas to obtain the required therapeutic effects.

Study Objectives: Evaluate per-patient diagnostic performance of a wireless dual-sensor system (ANNE sleep) compared with reference standard polysomnography (PSG) for the diagnosis of moderate and severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) with a minimum prespecified threshold of 80% for both sensitivity and specificity.
Methods: A multicenter clinical trial was conducted to evaluate ANNE sleep vs PSG to diagnose moderate and severe OSA in individuals 22 years or older. For each testing approach, apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) was manually scored and averaged by 3 registered sleep technologists blinded to the other system.

Background: The 6-bed critical care resuscitation unit (CCRU) is a unique and specialized intensive care unit (ICU) that streamlines the interhospital transfer (IHT-transfer between different hospitals) process for a wide range of patients with critical illness or time-sensitive disease. Previous studies showed the unit successfully increased the number of ICU admissions while reducing the time of transfer in the first year of its establishment. However, its sustainability is unknown.

According to WHO warnings, the antibiotic resistance crisis is a severe health issue in the 21st century, attributed to the overuse and misuse of these medications. Consequently, the dramatic spreading rate of the drug-resistant microbial pathogens strains. The microbiological, biochemical tests and antibiotic sensitivity identified the bacteria's multi-drug resistance (MDR).

Context: Underlying chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection increases the risk of drug-induced liver injury (DILI) when receiving tuberculosis therapies. Prevalence of HBV and latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) coinfection is not well reported and no studies have evaluated testing patterns for and prevalence of HBV-LTBI coinfection in the United States.
Objective: To evaluate patterns of HBV and LTBI testing and prevalence of HBV-LTBI coinfection in the United States.

In this manuscript, we report four series for 1,2,4-triazine derivatives as dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Density functional theory (DFT) methods via utilizing Becke's three-parameter functional and LeeeYangeParr functional (B3LYP) level with 6-31G (d, p) basis set to investigate their modeling molecular structures. Optimized molecular structures for studied molecular structures are obtained using the DFT/B3LYP/6-31G (d, p) method.

The multicenter, phase Ib CC-122-DLBCL-001 dose-expansion study (NCT02031419) explored the cereblon E3 ligase modulator (CELMoD) agent avadomide (CC-122) plus rituximab in patients with relapsed/refractory (R/R) diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) or follicular lymphoma (FL). Patients received avadomide 3 mg/day 5 days on/2 days off plus rituximab 375 mg/m on day 8 of cycle 1, day 1 of cycles 2 through 6, and day 1 of every third subsequent cycle for 2 years. Primary endpoints were safety and tolerability; preliminary efficacy was a secondary endpoint.

Plasmodium falciparum has developed extensive mechanisms to evade host immune clearance. Currently, most of our understanding is based on in vitro studies of individual parasite variant surface antigens and how this relates to the processes in vivo is not well-understood. Here, we have used a humanized mouse model to identify parasite factors important for in vivo growth.

The natural distributions of freshwater fish species are limited by their thermal tolerances via physiological constraints and increased interspecific competition as temperatures shift toward the thermal optima of other syntopic species. Species may mediate stress from temperature change physiologically, behaviorally, or both; but these changes may compromise competitive advantages through effects on feeding and social behavior. In the Appalachian Mountains of North America, creek chub () are found in warm-water and cold-water streams and overlap in range with brook trout () across lower thermal maxima, where they compete for food and space.

With the increase of the contagiousness rates of Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), new strategies are needed to halt virus spread. Blocking virus entry by capturing its spike (S) protein is one of the effective approaches that could help in eliminating or reducing transmission rate of viruses. Herein, we aim to develop a nanofiber-based filter for protective face masks, composed of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers (NFs)-loaded with Angiotensin Converting Enzyme-2 (ACE-2) for capturing the spike protein of severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) and blocking its entry.
