Early Hum Dev

September 2016

Division of Asthma, Allergy and Lung Biology, MRC-Asthma UK Centre in Allergic Mechanisms of Asthma, King's College London, UK; NIHR Biomedical Centre at Guy's and St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust and King's College London, UK. Electronic address:

Background: The first five initial inflation pressures and times during resuscitation of prematurely born infants are frequently lower than those recommended and rarely result in tidal volumes exceeding the anatomical dead space. Greater volumes were produced when the infant was provoked to inspire by an inflation (active inflation).

Aims: To assess factors associated with a shorter time to the first active inflation.

Background: Dichotomisation of continuous data has statistical drawbacks such as loss of power but may be useful in epidemiological research to define high risk individuals.

Methods: We extend a methodology for the presentation of comparison of proportions derived from a comparison of means for a continuous outcome to reflect the relationship between a continuous outcome and covariates in a linear (mixed) model without losing statistical power. The so called "distributional method" is described and using perinatal data for illustration, results from the distributional method are compared to those of logistic regression and to quantile regression for three different outcomes.

Unlabelled: The morbidity of infants with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) who had undergone foetal endoscopic tracheal occlusion (FETO) to those who had not was compared and predictors of survival regardless of antenatal intervention were identified. FETO was undertaken on the basis of the lung to head ratio or the position of the liver. A retrospective review of the records of 78 CDH infants was undertaken to determine the lung-head ratio (LHR) at referral and prior to birth, maximum oxygen saturation in the labour suite and neonatal outcomes.

Multicentre prospective survey of SeHCAT provision and practice in the UK.

BMJ Open Gastroenterol

June 2016

Division of Health and Social Care Research, King's College London, London, UK; NIHR Biomedical Research Centre at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and King's College London, Guy's Hospital, London, UK.

Objective: A clinical diagnosis of bile acid malabsorption (BAM) can be confirmed using SeHCAT (tauroselcholic ((75)selenium) acid), a radiolabelled synthetic bile acid. However, while BAM can be the cause of chronic diarrhoea, it is often overlooked as a potential diagnosis. Therefore, we investigated the use of SeHCAT for diagnosis of BAM in UK hospitals.

Ventilatory Responses to Hypercarbia in Infants of Mothers Who Smoke and Misuse Substances.

J Pediatr

August 2016

Division of Asthma, Allergy and Lung Biology, MRC & Asthma UK Centre in Allergic Mechanisms of Asthma, King's College London, London, United Kingdom; NIHR Biomedical Centre at Guy's and St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust and King's College London, London, United Kingdom. Electronic address:

The ventilatory response of infants of mothers who smoke and misuse substances and controls to carbon dioxide was assessed at 6-12 weeks and the perinatal period. Infants of mothers who smoke and misuse substances had a dampened response at the peak age of sudden infant death syndrome, greater than in the perinatal period.

The genomic landscape of breast cancer is complex, and inter- and intra-tumour heterogeneity are important challenges in treating the disease. In this study, we sequence 173 genes in 2,433 primary breast tumours that have copy number aberration (CNA), gene expression and long-term clinical follow-up data. We identify 40 mutation-driver (Mut-driver) genes, and determine associations between mutations, driver CNA profiles, clinical-pathological parameters and survival.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between body mass index (BMI) and healthcare costs in relation to obesity-related comorbidity and depression. A population-based cohort study was undertaken in the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD). A stratified random sample was taken of participants registered with general practices in England in 2008 and 2013.

Understanding kidney transplant patients' treatment choices: The interaction of emotion with medical and social influences on risk preferences.

Soc Sci Med

April 2016

King's College London, Division of Health and Social Care Research, Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine, Addison House, Guy's Campus, London SE1 1UL, United Kingdom. Electronic address:

Following renal transplantation patients experience on-going immunosuppressant medication to reduce the risk of graft rejection. Over the long term the side effects of immunosuppressive drugs may affect graft survival and significantly increase risks of cancers, stroke and cardiovascular disease. To reduce these risks research is underway to develop a biomarker test to identify those patients who are likely to be 'tolerant' to their graft and therefore able to reduce immunosuppression.

Objective: The objective of the study is to evaluate the effect of gastric banding, gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy on medium to long-term diabetes control in obese participants with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Research Design And Methods: Matched cohort study using primary care electronic health records from the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink. Obese participants with type 2 diabetes who received bariatric surgery from 2002 to 2014 were compared with matched control participants who did not receive BS.

September 2016

Division of Asthma, Allergy and Lung Biology, MRC and Asthma UK Centre in Allergic Mechanisms of Asthma, King's College London, London, UK NIHR Biomedical Centre at Guy's and St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust and King's College London, London, UK.

Objective: To determine whether the time to achieve full oral feeding differed between infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) supported by nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) compared with those supported by nCPAP and subsequently transferred to heated, humidified, high-flow nasal cannula oxygen (HHFNC).

Design: Two-cohort comparison.

Setting: Tertiary neonatal unit.

Objectives: This study sought to evaluate basket catheter deployment, catheter-tissue contact, and time-space stability of unipolar atrial electrograms (aEGMs) recorded in persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) patients.

Background: Panoramic mapping of human AF using multiple-electrode basket catheters may identify AF sources. Although clinical results using this technique are provocative, questions remain about its effectiveness.

A novel subset of human regulatory B-cells has recently been described. They arise from within the transitional B-cell subpopulation and are characterised by the production of IL-10. They appear to be of significant importance in regulating T-cell immunity in vivo.

Introduction: Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) improve the metabolic function of co-cultured hepatocytes. The present study aimed to further enhance the trophic effects of co-culture with hepatocytes using hypoxic preconditioning (HPc) of the MSCs and also to investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms involved.

Methods: Human adipose tissue-derived MSCs were subjected to hypoxia (2 % O2; HPc) or normoxia (20 % O2) for 24 h and then co-cultured with isolated human hepatocytes.

Diagnostic accuracy of (18)F amyloid PET tracers for the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Eur J Nucl Med Mol Imaging

February 2016

King's Technology Evaluation Centre, King's College London, St Thomas' Hospital, Westminster Bridge Road, London, SE1 7EH, UK.

Imaging or tissue biomarker evidence has been introduced into the core diagnostic pathway for Alzheimer's disease (AD). PET using (18)F-labelled beta-amyloid PET tracers has shown promise for the early diagnosis of AD. However, most studies included only small numbers of participants and no consensus has been reached as to which radiotracer has the highest diagnostic accuracy.
