Department of Health Science, Section of Nursing Research, University of Groningen, University Medical Center Groningen, Groningen, The Netherlands.

Continuous information exchange between healthcare professionals is facilitated by individualized care plans. Compliance with the planned care as documented in care plans is important to provide person-centered care which contributes to the continuity of care and quality of care outcomes. Using the Nursing Interventions Classification, this study examined the consistency between documented and actually provided interventions by type of nursing staff with 150 residents in long-term institutional care.

A Game-Based, Physical Activity Coaching Application for Older Adults: Design Approach and User Experience in Daily Life.

Games Health J

June 2020

Biomedical Signals and Systems, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Twente, Enschede, The Netherlands.

In this article, we describe the design approach of a game-based, mobile coaching application for older adults (65-75 years) that aimed to stimulate physical activity (PA) in daily life. We evaluated older adults' experiences using this application compared with a standard coaching application in terms of engagement, motivation to be physically active, and in relation to the applied design features. An iterative design approach was followed to develop the game-based coaching application, called WordFit.

Effects of Dementia Care Mapping on well-being and quality of life of older people with intellectual disability: A quasi-experimental study.

J Appl Res Intellect Disabil

July 2019

Department of Health Sciences, Community & Occupational Medicine, University Medical Center Groningen, University of Groningen, Groningen, The Netherlands.

Background: The ageing of people with intellectual disability, accompanied with consequences like dementia, challenges intellectual disability-care staff and creates a need for supporting methods, with Dementia Care Mapping (DCM) as a promising possibility. This study examined the effect of DCM on the quality of life of older people with intellectual disability.

Methods: We performed a quasi-experimental study in 23 group homes for older people with intellectual disability in the Netherlands, comparing DCM (n = 113) with care-as-usual (CAU; n = 111).

Background: Nurses and patients believe compassion to be one of the most important professional values. However, it is not known which factors influence compassionate behaviour in practice. There is a need for insight whether or not compassion in nursing practice flourishes or falters.

Background: The number of people with intellectual disability and dementia increases; this combination causes behavioural changes. Dementia Care Mapping (DCM) supports staff in dementia care in nursing homes and may be useful in intellectual disability-care. This qualitative study examines the feasibility of DCM for older people with intellectual disability and dementia.

The first use of dementia care mapping in the care for older people with intellectual disability: a process analysis according to the RE-AIM framework.

Aging Ment Health

July 2018

c Department of Health Sciences, Community & Occupational Medicine , University Medical Center Groningen, University of Groningen, Groningen , The Netherlands.

Introduction: The aging of the population with intellectual disability (ID), with associated conseqences as dementia, creates a need for evidence-based methods to support staff. Dementia Care Mapping (DCM) is perceived to be valuable in dementia care and promising in ID-care. The aim of this study was to evaluate the process of the first use of DCM in ID-care.

Center for Education Development and Research in Health Professions (CEDAR), University of Groningen and University Medical Center Groningen, Antonius Deusinglaan 1, FC40, 9713, AV, Groningen, The Netherlands.

Background: Progress testing is an assessment tool used to periodically assess all students at the end-of-curriculum level. Because students cannot know everything, it is important that they recognize their lack of knowledge. For that reason, the formula-scoring method has usually been used.

Identifying residents at risk of care complications in care homes.

Nurs Stand

September 2016

NHL University of Applied Sciences, iHuman research group, Leeuwarden, Netherlands.

Care complications are common conditions which affect residents in care homes and often arise from risks associated with their illness. They can be serious and affect the health and quality of life of residents. It is important that nurses are able to assess an individual's risk of developing complications of care, and determine appropriate prevention and treatment measures.

Learning an EMG Controlled Game: Task-Specific Adaptations and Transfer.

PLoS One

July 2017

University of Groningen, University Medical Center Groningen, Center for Human Movement Science, Groningen, The Netherlands.

Video games that aim to improve myoelectric control (myogames) are gaining popularity and are often part of the rehabilitation process following an upper limb amputation. However, direct evidence for their effect on prosthetic skill is limited. This study aimed to determine whether and how myogaming improves EMG control and whether performance improvements transfer to a prosthesis-simulator task.

How oil properties and layer thickness determine the entrainment of spilled surface oil.

Mar Pollut Bull

September 2016

Marine Animal Ecology group, Wageningen University, P.O. Box 338, 6700 AH, Wageningen, The Netherlands; Environmental Technology sub-department, Wageningen University, P.O. Box 17, 6700 AA Wageningen, The Netherlands.

Viscosity plays an important role in dispersion of spilled surface oil, so does adding chemical dispersants. For seven different oil grades, entrainment rate and initial droplet size distribution were investigated using a plunging jet apparatus with coupled camera equipment and subsequent image analysis. We found that amount of oil entrained is proportional to layer thickness and largely independent of oil properties: A dispersant dose of 1:200 did not result in a significantly different entrainment rate compared to no dispersants.

Application of chemical dispersants or mechanical dispersion on surface oil is a trade-off between surface effects (impact of floating oil) and sub-surface effects (impact of suspended oil). Making an informed decision regarding such response, requires insight in the induced change in fate and transport of the oil. We aim to identify how natural, chemical and mechanical dispersion could be quantified in oil spill models.

This study quantifies the effect of oil layer thickness on entrainment and dispersion of oil into seawater, using a plunging jet with a camera system. In contrast to what is generally assumed, we revealed that for the low viscosity "surrogate MC252 oil" we used, entrainment rate is directly proportional to layer thickness. Furthermore, the volume of stably suspended small oil droplets increases with energy input (plunge height) and is mostly proportional to layer thickness.

The quality of sample inoculation is critical for achieving an optimal yield of discrete colonies in both monomicrobial and polymicrobial samples to perform identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing. Consequently, we compared the performance between the InoqulA (BD Kiestra), the WASP (Copan), and manual inoculation methods. Defined mono- and polymicrobial samples of 4 bacterial species and cloudy urine specimens were inoculated on chromogenic agar by the InoqulA, the WASP, and manual methods.

Many countries in Europe and the world have to cope with an aging population. Although health policy in many countries aims at increasing disability-free life expectancy, elderly patients represent a significant proportion of all patients admitted to different hospital departments. The aim of the research was to investigate the relationship between health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and the care dependency status among elderly hospital patients.
