Current estimates of wetland contributions to the global methane budget carry high uncertainty, particularly in accurately predicting emissions from high methane-emitting wetlands. Microorganisms drive methane cycling, but little is known about their conservation across wetlands. To address this, we integrate 16S rRNA amplicon datasets, metagenomes, metatranscriptomes, and annual methane flux data across 9 wetlands, creating the Multi-Omics for Understanding Climate Change (MUCC) v2.

Amplitude compression is an indispensable feature of contemporary audio production and especially relevant in modern hearing aids. The cortical fate of amplitude-compressed speech signals is not well-studied, however, and may yield undesired side effects: We hypothesize that compressing the amplitude envelope of continuous speech reduces neural tracking. Yet, leveraging such a 'compression side effect' on unwanted, distracting sounds could potentially support attentive listening if effectively reducing their neural tracking.

The limited membrane permeability and bacterial resistance pose significant challenges in the management of intracellular drug-resistant bacterial infections. To overcome this issue, we developed a bacterial-targeted drug delivery system based on quaternary ammonium chitosan-modified mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN-NH-CFP@HACC) for the treatment of intracellular Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections. This system utilizes amino-functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles to efficiently load cefoperazone (CFP), and the nanoparticles' surface is coated with 2-hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) to target bacteria and enhance macrophage uptake.

Circadian clocks provide a biological measure of time that coordinates metabolism, physiology and behaviour with 24 h cycles in the environment. Circadian systems have a variety of characteristic properties, such as entrainment to environmental cues, a self-sustaining rhythm of about 24 h and temperature compensation of the circadian rhythm. In this perspective, we discuss the process of circadian gating, which refers to the restriction of a biological event to particular times of day by the circadian clock.

The GlnE enzyme, functioning as an adenylyltransferase/adenylyl-removing enzyme, plays a crucial role in reversible adenylylation of glutamine synthetase (GS), which in turn regulates bacterial nitrogen assimilation. Genomic analysis of Azorhizobium caulinodans ORS571 revealed an open reading frame encoding a GlnE protein, whose function in the free-living and symbiotic states remains to be elucidated. A glnE deletion mutant retained high GS activity even under nitrogen-rich conditions.

Plastic film mulching is a potentially water-saving cultivation strategy, while straw return coupled with nitrogen (N) fertilization can ensure sustainable soil productivity and increased soil organic matter (SOM) sequestration. Nevertheless, a comprehensive understanding of how soil quality and agronomic productivity respond to long-term N fertilization and straw incorporation practices under non-flooded conditions with plastic film mulching remains elusive. Herein, a 15-year field experiment with straw incorporation practices (straw return and no straw return) under various N fertilization rates (N0, N1, N2, N3, and N4: 0, 45, 90, 135, and 180 kg N ha, respectively) was conducted to explore their long-term effects.

To solve the problem of low chemical oxygen demand (COD)/N and poor efficiency of single-stage sequencing batch reactor (SBR) or anoxic/oxic process (A/O) in treatment of digested effluent of swine wastewater, combined SBR-A/O and A/O-SBR processes were employed in the addition ratios of 0, 10%, 30%, and 40% (V/V)) of raw swine wastewater (RS). Analysis of pollutants removal performance of SBR-A/O and A/O-SBR systems showed no significant difference between the two systems without RS addition. However, after adding RS, the pollutants removal efficiency of the two systems increased with the increase in the ratio of RS, with SBR-A/O system presenting better pollutants removal performance than A/O-SBR system.

The ozone micro-bubbles (OCBs) technology is increasingly gaining traction as a promising alternative method for organic compounds removal in wastewater. Nevertheless, there is a scarcity of literature addressing the molecular-level transformation of organic compounds during OCBs treatment. In this work, the secondary effluent from a wastewater treatment plant was treated with ozone milli-bubbles (OLBs) and OCBs, and the fate of organic compounds at the molecular level was investigated using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC-QTOF-MS).

A significant enhancement in the photocatalytic activity of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is achieved by expanding the visible-light response range through the strategic incorporation of functional groups, such as metalloporphyrins. Herein, Pd-metalised tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (PdTCPP) photosensitiser is integrated into the UiO-66-(NH) framework, creating the hybrid material PdTCPP ⊂ UiO-66-(NH) using a facile mixed-ligand strategy. Platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) are subsequently introduced as a co-catalyst via in situ photoreduction, resulting in the formation of the Pt/PdTCPP ⊂ UiO-66-(NH) hybrid material, which demonstrates exceptional catalytic performance under visible-light irradiation.

Twisted halide perovskite bilayers, a type of moiré material, show square moiré patterns with exciting optical properties. Atomic-scale structure analysis and its correlation with properties are difficult to achieve due to the extreme sensitivity of organic-inorganic halide perovskites to the illuminated electron beam in conventional/scanning transmission electron microscopy. Here, we developed a low-dose exit wave reconstruction methodology with a real-space resolution of one angstrom at ∼50 e/Å, which recovers the phase information on the moiré fringes in CHNHPbI (MAPbI) twisted perovskite bilayers at atomic scale, enabling detailed structural analysis of defects and corresponding strain distribution in such moiré materials.

ConspectusChiral organosilicon compounds bearing a Si-stereogenic center have attracted increasing attention in various scientific communities and appear to be a topic of high current relevance in modern organic chemistry, given their versatile utility as chiral building blocks, chiral reagents, chiral auxiliaries, and chiral catalysts. Historically, access to these non-natural Si-stereogenic silanes mainly relies on resolution, whereas their asymmetric synthetic methods dramatically lagged compared to their carbon counterparts. Over the past two decades, transition-metal-catalyzed desymmetrization of prochiral organosilanes has emerged as an effective tool for the synthesis of enantioenriched Si-stereogenic silanes.

Ontologies and knowledge graphs (KGs) are general-purpose computable representations of some domain, such as human anatomy, and are frequently a crucial part of modern information systems. Most of these structures change over time, incorporating new knowledge or information that was previously missing. Managing these changes is a challenge, both in terms of communicating changes to users and providing mechanisms to make it easier for multiple stakeholders to contribute.

Ectomycorrhizal fungi (EMF) play a crucial role in facilitating plant nutrient uptake from the soil although inorganic nitrogen (N) can potentially diminish this role. However, the effect of inorganic N availability and organic matter on shaping EMF-mediated plant iron (Fe) uptake remains unclear. To explore this, we performed a microcosm study on Pinus taeda roots inoculated with Suillus cothurnatus treated with +/-Fe-coated sand, +/-organic matter, and a gradient of NHNO concentrations.
