Methamphetamine is a widely abused drug associated with significant neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration, mainly through the activation of glial cells and neurons in the central nervous system. This study investigates the role of the astrocyte-specific NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain-containing protein 6 (NLRP6) inflammasome in methamphetamine-induced astrocytic pyroptosis and neuroinflammation. Our findings demonstrate that methamphetamine exposure induces NLRP6-dependent pyroptosis, astrocyte activation, and the release of proinflammatory cytokines in mouse primary astrocytes.

Rare inherited diseases caused by mutations in the copper transporters (CTR1) or induce copper deficiency in the brain, causing seizures and neurodegeneration in infancy through poorly understood mechanisms. Here, we used multiple model systems to characterize the molecular mechanisms by which neuronal cells respond to copper deficiency. Targeted deletion of CTR1 in neuroblastoma cells produced copper deficiency that produced a metabolic shift favoring glycolysis over oxidative phosphorylation.

Objective: The orthodontic mini-implant (OMI) failure often occurs due to the accumulation of peri-implantitis bacteria surrounding it, which results in a stable, resistant form of absolute skeletal anchorage during orthodontic treatment. Administering doxycycline may be the solution, but long-term side effects result in antibiotic resistance. Roselle flowers (Hibiscus sabdariffa) possess beneficial active phytochemical substances, which may have potential as an OMI peri-implantitis alternative therapy.

Regenerating Locus Coeruleus-Norepinephrine (LC-NE) Function: A Novel Approach for Neurodegenerative Diseases.

Cell Prolif

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, School of Life Sciences, Chemistry and Biomedicine Innovation Center (ChemBIC), Nanjing University, Nanjing, China.

Pathological changes in the locus coeruleus-norepinephrine (LC-NE) neurons, the major source of norepinephrine (NE, also known as noradrenaline) in the brain, are evident during the early stages of neurodegenerative diseases (ND). Research on both human and animal models have highlighted the therapeutic potential of targeting the LC-NE system to mitigate the progression of ND and alleviate associated psychiatric symptoms. However, the early and widespread degeneration of the LC-NE system presents a significant challenge for direct intervention in ND.

Departamento de Ciencias de la Tierra, Aragosaurus-IUCA: Recursos Geológicos y Paleoambientes, Universidad de Zaragoza, Zaragoza, Spain.

Ornithopods are an extinct group of dinosaurs that were particularly abundant and diverse in the Cretaceous of the Iberian Peninsula, and whose abundance in the Maestrazgo Basin has allowed numerous taxa to be identified over the last decade. Many of these fossil remains are still taxonomically indeterminate and require a more detailed study on both a macroscopic and microscopic scale. In this contribution, an osteohistological analysis is carried out on a partial skeleton-composed of five incomplete vertebrae, two dorsal ribs, an ischium, a fibula, and a tibia-found in the province of Aliaga (Teruel, NE Spain).

Interleukin-17: A pleiotropic cytokine implicated in inflammatory, infectious, and malignant disorders.

Cytokine Growth Factor Rev

January 2025

MCW Cancer Center and Genomic Sciences and Precision Medicine Center, Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, WI, USA; WIN Consortium, Paris, France; University of Nebraska, Lincoln, NE, USA. Electronic address:

IL-17A, referred to as IL-17, is the founding member of a family of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including IL-17B, IL-17C, IL-17D, IL-17E (or IL-25), and IL-17F, which act via receptors IL-17RA to IL-17RE, and elicit potent cellular responses that impact diverse diseases. IL-17's interactions with various cytokines include forming a heterodimer with IL-17F and being stimulated by IL-23's activation of Th17 cells, which can lead to inflammation and autoimmunity. IL-17 is implicated in infectious diseases and inflammatory disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis, promoting neutrophil recruitment and anti-bacterial immunity, but potentially exacerbating fungal and viral infections, revealing its dual role as protective and pathologic.
