Background: Collaborative research consortia provide an efficient method to increase sample size, enabling evaluation of subgroup heterogeneity and rare outcomes. In addition to missing data challenges faced by all cohort studies like nonresponse and attrition, collaborative studies have missing data due to differences in study design and measurement of the contributing studies.
Methods: We extend ROSETTA, a latent variable method that creates common measures across datasets collecting the same latent constructs with only partial overlap in measures, to define a common measure of socioeconomic status (SES) across cohorts with varying indicators in the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes Cohort, a consortium of pregnancy and pediatric cohorts.

Managing conflicts of interest (COIs) in scientific decision-making is important for minimizing bias and fostering public trust in science. Proper management of COIs has added significance when scientists are making decisions that impact public policy, such as assessing substances for carcinogenicity. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) organizes expert working groups to identify putative carcinogens and determine whether or not the hazard is likely to present significant potential harm to humans.

The dietetics profession is facing a shortage of registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) with a terminal degree. The need for doctoral prepared RDNs was augmented with the entry-level RDN requiring a graduate degree and exacerbated by the number of retirees from the baby boomer generation. Advanced practice doctoral (APD) programs can assist in meeting the increased need for doctoral prepared RDNs.

The universe of possible chloro-paraffin (CP) structures is a complex one. Even the world of short-chain CPs (SCCPs) is large, containing thousands of constitutional isomers and stereoisomers. We investigated a technical SCCP mixture (Hordalub 80, Vantage Leuna, m = 56%) and found 33 CP-homologues in this material with carbon- (n) and chlorine-numbers (n) varying from 10 to 13 and 4-12, respectively.

We investigated the effect of anticipation on the proactive and reactive neuromechanical responses of the distal leg muscles in 20 young adults to anticipated and unanticipated rapid anterior or posterior treadmill-induced balance perturbations applied during walking. We quantified local medial gastrocnemius (MG) and tibialis anterior (TA) neuromechanics using cine B-mode ultrasound and surface electromyography before, during, and after the perturbation. Our findings partially supported the hypothesis that anticipated perturbations would elicit greater proactive agonist muscle adjustments than unanticipated perturbations.

The ossa cordis (OC), or cardiac bone, is a bony structure within the cardiac skeleton of mammals, believed to maintain heart shape during systole and enhance contraction efficiency. Found in large mammals, especially ruminants, and has recently been described in chimpanzees; however, OC has not previously been described in humans. Herein, we present an incidental finding of OC in the heart of a 39-year-old man who suffered a stab wound to chest.

Amid global challenges like climate change, extinctions, and disease epidemics, science and society require nuanced, international solutions that are grounded in robust, interdisciplinary perspectives and datasets that span deep time. Natural history collections, from modern biological specimens to the archaeological and fossil records, are crucial tools for understanding cultural and biological processes that shape our modern world. At the same time, natural history collections in low and middle-income countries are at-risk and underresourced, imperiling efforts to build the infrastructure and scientific capacity necessary to tackle critical challenges.

The presence of hypothermia among young infants in the emergency department may be a sign of serious or invasive bacterial infections, or invasive herpes simplex viral infection. However, hypothermia may also occur due to a variety of other infectious and noninfectious conditions or environmental exposure. In some settings, hypothermia may represent a protective, energy-conserving response to illness.

The origins and prehistory of domestic sheep () are incompletely understood; to address this, we generated data from 118 ancient genomes spanning 12,000 years sampled from across Eurasia. Genomes from Central Türkiye ~8000 BCE are genetically proximal to the domestic origins of sheep but do not fully explain the ancestry of later populations, suggesting a mosaic of wild ancestries. Genomic signatures indicate selection by ancient herders for pigmentation patterns, hornedness, and growth rate.

The composition conversion in block copolymer induced by external stimuli such as light and pH is an effective strategy to trigger the disassembly of vesicles experimentally. Based on this strategy, the disassembly behavior of the ABA triblock copolymer vesicle induced by the composition conversion from B block to C block was studied using Monte Carlo simulation. In this study, a part of the B block in the ABA triblock copolymer was converted to the new block C with weaker hydrophobicity, forming the ABCA tetrablock copolymer.
