Interaction of the pre-organized complex of iron(II) trimethylacetate and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) [Fe(piv)(phen)] () (piv = (Me)CCO)) with 1,6-diaminohexane (dahx) in anhydrous acetonitrile yielded a 1D coordination polymer [FeO(piv)(dahx)] () and an organic salt of pivalic acid (Hdahx)(piv) (). The structure of the obtained compounds was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The phase purity of the complexes was determined by powder X-ray diffraction analysis.

Cytotoxicity assays are essential tests in studies on the safety and biocompatibility of various substances and on the efficiency of anticancer drugs. The most frequently used assays commonly require application of externally added labels and read only collective response of cells. Recent studies show that the internal biophysical parameters of cells can be associated with the cellular damage.

The problem of the origin of biochirality and the related problem of the initial monomer selection are still under discussion, and the main point here is not the mechanics of enantiomer separation but the problem of the role of chirality in the very early stages of evolution. A recent breakthrough in understanding the influence of a static magnetic field on non-magnetic systems can shed light on this complex problem. The phenomenon of magnetosensitivity of non-magnetic systems was reported for only chiral systems and was closely related to the ability of some chiral substances to self-assemble.

Some low-molecular-weight substances are able to self-assemble into fiber-like structures (strings) to form gels. One of the examples of such substances is trifluoroacetylated alpha-aminoalcohols (TFAAAs) able to gelate in many organic solvents. Here we report the formation and describe the properties of a layer of an altered solvent covering the strings' surface.

Highly porous composite poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) cryogels loaded with the poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) microbeads containing the drug, simvastatin (SVN), were prepared via cryogenic processing (freezing-storing frozen-defrosting) of the beads' suspensions in aqueous PVA solution. The rigidity of the resultant composite cryogels increased with increasing the filler content. Optical microscopy of the thin section of such gel matrices revealed macro-porous morphology of both continuous (PVA cryogels) and discrete (PHB-microbeads) phases.

The process of the dyad formation passing as self-assembly in the donor-acceptor phthalocyanine-porphyrin systems was explored using UV-Visible, IR, and H NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The geometric and electronic structures of the dyads were identified using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations.

The structure of a free nickel (II) octamethylporphyrin (NiOMP) molecule was determined for the first time through a combined gas-phase electron diffraction (GED) and mass spectrometry (MS) experiment, as well as through quantum chemical (QC) calculations. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations do not provide an unambiguous answer about the planarity or non-planar distortion of the NiOMP skeleton. The GED refinement in such cases is non-trivial.

Autophagy is the process of recycling and utilization of degraded organelles and macromolecules in the cell compartments formed during the fusion of autophagosomes with lysosomes. During autophagy induction the healthy and tumor cells adapt themselves to harsh conditions such as cellular stress or insufficient supply of nutrients in the cell environment to maintain their homeostasis. Autophagy is currently seen as a form of programmed cell death along with apoptosis and necroptosis.

In this paper, terahertz (THz) pulsed spectroscopy and solid immersion microscopy were applied to study interactions between water vapor and tissue scaffolds-the decellularized bovine pericardium (DBP) collagen matrices, in intact form, cross-linked with the glutaraldehyde or treated by plasma. The water-absorbing properties of biomaterials are prognostic for future cell-mediated reactions of the recipient tissue with the scaffold. Complex dielectric permittivity of DBPs was measured in the 0.

Significance: An increasing interest in the area of biological effects at exposure of tissues and cells to the terahertz (THz) radiation is driven by a rapid progress in THz biophotonics, observed during the past decades. Despite the attractiveness of THz technology for medical diagnosis and therapy, there is still quite limited knowledge about safe limits of THz exposure. Different modes of THz exposure of tissues and cells, including continuous-wave versus pulsed radiation, various powers, and number and duration of exposure cycles, ought to be systematically studied.

A series of pyridyl (pyridinium) substituted benzoxazoles were studied by steady state absorption, fluorescence spectroscopy, time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy, fs pulse absorption and polarization spectroscopy, and quantum-chemical calculations. The spectral and kinetic parameters of the fluorophores in MeCN and EtOAc were obtained experimentally and were calculated by means of DFT and TDDFT methods. A scheme including four transient excited states was proposed for the interpretation of differential absorption kinetics of the charged fluorophores.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is one of the most aggressive (grade IV) gliomas characterized by a high rate of recurrence, resistance to therapy and a grim survival prognosis. The long-awaited improvement in GBM patients' survival rates essentially depends on advances in the development of new therapeutic approaches. Recent preclinical studies show that nanoscale materials could greatly contribute to the improvement of diagnosis and management of brain cancers.

Purpose: To ascertain the role of autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) in the tendon regeneration.
Methods: The study was conducted on 58 Achilles tendons from 29 laboratory Chinchilla adult rabbits. The central bundles of 48 tendons were partially removed and substituted with a tissue-engineered construct consisting of a collagen sponge either loaded with BM-MSCs (n = 24) or cell free (n = 24), placed inside a Vicryl mesh tube.

Cell aggregates, including sheets and spheroids, represent a simple yet powerful model system to study both biochemical and biophysical intercellular interactions. However, it is becoming evident that, although the mechanical properties and behavior of multicellular structures share some similarities with individual cells, yet distinct differences are observed in some principal aspects. The description of mechanical phenomena at the level of multicellular model systems is a necessary step for understanding tissue mechanics and its fundamental principles in health and disease.

Autophagy is a catabolic process that allows cells to scavenge damaged organelles and produces energy to maintain cellular homeostasis. It is also an effective defense method for cells, which allows them to identify an internalized pathogen and destroy it through the fusion of the autophagosome and lysosomes. Recent reports have demonstrated that various chemotherapeutic agents and viral gene therapeutic vehicles provide therapeutic advantages for patients with glioblastoma as monotherapy or in combination with standards of care.

This review examines investigations into the functionalization of polysaccharides by substituents containing multiple (CC) bonds and thiol (SH) groups that are prone to (co)polymerization in the presence of thermal, redox and photoinitiators or Michael addition reactions. A comparative analysis of the approaches to grafting the mentioned substituents onto the polysaccharide macromolecules was conducted. The use of the modified polysaccharides for the design of the 3D structures, including for the development of the pore bearing matrixes of cells or scaffolds utilized in regenerative medicine was examined.
