A stimuli-responsive (pH- and thermoresponsive) micelle-forming diblock copolymer, poly(1,2-butadiene)--poly(,-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PB--PDMAEMA), was used as a polymer template for the in situ synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) through Ag complexation with PDMAEMA blocks, followed by the reduction of the bound Ag with sodium borohydride. A successful synthesis of the AgNPs on a PB--PDMAEMA micellar template was confirmed by means of UV-Vis spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy, wherein the shape and size of the AgNPs were determined. A phase transition of the polymer matrix in the AgNPs/PB--PDMAEMA metallopolymer hybrids, which results from a collapse and aggregation of PDMAEMA blocks, was manifested by changes in the transmittance of their aqueous solutions as a function of temperature.

Some low-molecular-weight substances are able to self-assemble into fiber-like structures (strings) to form gels. One of the examples of such substances is trifluoroacetylated alpha-aminoalcohols (TFAAAs) able to gelate in many organic solvents. Here we report the formation and describe the properties of a layer of an altered solvent covering the strings' surface.

Interaction of binary chitosan/nonionic surfactant (NIS) system with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in aqueous solution is described using turbodimetry, light scattering, electophoretic mobility and cryogenic electron microscopy. The formation of insoluble CHI/SDS complexes is weakened with a decrease in molecular weight of chitosan and critical micelle concentration of NIS as well as with an increase in NIS concentration. Soluble chitosan/NIS complexes absorb SDS molecules until the charge of mixed chitosan/NIS/SDS complexes reaches a critical value that depends on chitosan molecular weight followed by aggregation of primary electrostatic complexes via hydrogen bonding to complex nanoparticles.

The existence of an environmentally regulated version of meiotic crossing-over, or eco-crossover, is proposed, and the main consequences of this hypothesis are considered. Eco-crossover is a key source of partially directed genetic diversity of eukaryotes. In stressful environment, it creates ecologically justified and topologically specific genetic changes, and hence phenotypic variability, with which the selection works.

A kinetic study of the effect of thermoheliox (inhalation of a helium and oxygen mixture, 70 °C) on the functional hemodynamics of the human brain by functional magnetic resonance imaging was carried out. Capsules with shells based on nanoparticles of different nature co-assembled at the interface of liquid phases of emulsion are promising carriers of lipophilic drugs. To obtain such capsules, theoretically using the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory and experimentally using dynamic light-scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) methods, the interaction of like-charged silica nanoparticles and detonation nanodiamonds in an aqueous solution was studied and their ratios selected for the formation of submicron-sized colloidosomes. The resulting colloidosomes were modified with additional layers of nanoparticles and polyelectrolytes, applying LbL technology.

The consolidated results obtained with the aid of MS/MS, electrophoresis, and colourimetry, demonstrated that none of the oxidised amino acid residues found in the proenzyme treated with 25 μM HOCl/OCl or 100 μM HO were functionally significant for plasminogen. However, the treatment of plasminogen with increasing concentrations of HOCl/OCl from 25 μM to 100 μM or HO from 100 μM to 300 μM promoted a partial loss in the activity of oxidised plasmin.

To obtain fiber materials with pronounced chemical-biological protection, metal (Zn or Ta) nanoparticles were jointly applied with polyelectrolyte complexes of enzymes and polypeptides being their stabilizers. Computer modeling revealed the preferences between certain polyelectrolyte partners for -acyl-homoserine lactone acylase and hexahistidine-tagged organophosphorus hydrolase (His-OPH) possessing the quorum quenching (QQ) behavior with bacterial cells. The combinations of metal nanoparticles and enzymes appeared to function better as compared to the combinations of the same QQ-enzymes with antibiotics (polymyxins), making it possible to decrease the applied quantities by orders of magnitude while giving the same effect.

The rise of various neurodegenerative disorders are somewhat correlating with the worldwide application of multiple anthropogenic toxicants. Though different possible targets were revealed to date, for example, for organophosphorus compounds (OPs), plenty of questions remain. We performed a comparative study of the colony-forming ability and the number of residual foci of DNA repair proteins in cultured human lung fibroblasts (MRC-5 cell line) after exposure to subpicosecond beams of accelerated electrons with an energy of 3.6 MeV and quasi-continuous radiation (accelerated electrons with an energy of 4 MeV and X-rays). The yield of damages causing reproductive cell death after pulsed subpicosecond radiation exposure was higher by ~1.

The kinetic characteristics of the interaction of -acetylcysteine (ASH) with reactive oxygen species (ROS), peroxyl radicals and hydrogen peroxide were determined. It was found that in terms of activity ASH in these reactions is similar to glutathione GSH, the main endogenous bioantioxidant. The kinetics of heat release in the interaction of GSH and ASH with HO was studied for the first time by isothermal calorimetry.

Genetics in the Soviet Union (USSR) achieved state-of-the-art results and had reached a peak of development by the mid-1930s due to the efforts of the scientific schools of several major figures, including Sergei Navashin, Nikolai Koltsov, Grigorii Levitsky, Yuri Filipchenko, Nikolai Vavilov, and Solomon Levit. Unfortunately, the Soviet government distrusted intellectually independent science and this led to state support for a fraudulent pseudoscientific concept widely known as Lysenkoism, which hugely damaged biology as a whole. Decades of dominance of the Lysenkoism had ruinous effects and the revival of biology in the USSR in the late 1950s-early 1960s was very difficult.
