P300 Wave Alterations and Cognitive Impairment in Cerebellum Lesions.

Patients with cognitive deficits have a prolonged latency and reduced amplitude of the P300 wave. However, no study has correlated P300 wave alterations with the cognitive performance of patients with cerebellar lesions. We aimed to determine if the cognitive status of these patients was associated with P300 wave alterations.

Uncommon Ectopic Pregnancies-Challenges in the Management.

Background: The risk factors for ectopic pregnancy are on the rise. Despite the progress (availability of serum hCG, USG and MRI), there are diagnostic and therapeutic challenges in the management. Up to 50% of ectopic pregnancies go undetected.

Impact of hyperglycemia on the expression of GLUT1 during oral carcinogenesis in rats.

Background: On the background of the epidemiological link between diabetes and oral cancer, the present study aimed to analyze the potential involvement of selected glucose transporters (GLUT1/GLUT3/GLUT4), if any, in such putative association.

Methods And Results: Oral carcinogenesis was induced by 4-nitroquinoline N-oxide in 10 non-diabetic and 10 diabetic rats; 8 non-diabetic and 7 diabetic rats served as controls. Expressions of selected GLUTs at mRNA and protein levels were analyzed in oral tissue (normal/lesion) by quantitative real-time PCR and immunohistochemistry respectively.

Predominance of genomically defined A lineage of HPV16 over D lineage in Indian patients from eastern India with squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix in association with distinct oncogenic phenotypes.

Human papillomavirus type-16 (HPV16) is classified into lineages, A, B, C and D and 10 sub-lineages portraying variable infectivity, persistence, and cytological outcomes, however, with geographical variations. Our objective was to delineate the distinctive features of lineages among cervical squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in the eastern region of India. A total of 145 SCC cases and 24 non-malignant specimens, harboring episomal HPV16, were included.

Differences of oral cancer in men and women of West Bengal, India.

Introduction: Oral cancer constitutes a major public health problem in South East Asia, as it causes profound social and economic consequences for people in this area. Nowadays, pattern of tobacco and alcohol use among females is changing and at the same time incidence of oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) among females is increasing.

Objectives: The aim of the study was to evaluate the possible differences between male and female patients suffering from oral SCC.

Over expression of HIF1α is associated with inactivation of both LimD1 and VHL in renal cell carcinoma: Clinical importance.

It is evident that the association of LimD1 and VHL could regulate stabilization of HIF1α protein. In this study, the expression of LimD1, VHL and HIF1α was analyzed in primary renal cell carcinoma (RCC) samples to understand their association with development of the disease. For this purpose, immunohistochemical expression analysis of LimD1, VHL and HIF1α was performed along with proliferation marker PCNA in 32 primary RCC samples in different subtypes at different clinical stages of Indian patients (year: 2014-2016).

We evaluated the effect of adding nalbuphine hydrochloride to levobupivacaine for supraclavicular brachial plexus blockade. The primary end-points were the onset and duration of sensory and motor blocks and duration of analgesia.

Does a single loading dose of tranexamic acid reduce perioperative blood loss and transfusion requirements after total knee replacement surgery? A randomized, controlled trial.

Background: Total knee replacement (TKR) is associated with high-perioperative blood loss, which often requires allogenic blood transfusion. Among the many strategies to decrease the need for allogenic transfusion, tranexamic acid (TA) is used systemically in perioperative setting with promising outcome. Here we evaluated the efficacy of single preoperative bolus dose of TA on reduction in blood loss and red blood cell transfusion in patients undergoing unilateral TKR.

Emergence agitation prevention in paediatric ambulatory surgery: A comparison between intranasal Dexmedetomidine and Clonidine.

Objective: Emergence agitation (EA), a short-lived, self-limiting phenomenon, arises frequently after the use of inhalational agents and hampers the implementation of pediatric ambulatory surgery in spite of using so many drugs with variable efficacy.

Methods: In this prospective, double-blinded, parallel group study (2008-2009), 80 children of both sex aged 3-7 years, with American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status grade I-II, undergoing sevoflurane-based general anesthesia for elective day care surgery were randomly assigned into groups C or D. Group C received 4 μg/kg intranasal clonidine, whereas group D received 1 μg/kg intranasal dexmedetomidine, 45 min before induction of anesthesia.

Unusual presentation of Klinefelter syndrome.

Introduction: Klinefelter syndrome usually presents in the puberty and adulthood with its characteristic features. We report a boy who had Klinefelter syndrome with hypospadias and hydrocele.

Case Note: Six and half year old boy had complaints of genitourinary problem in the form of hypospadias, small phallus and hydrocele.

Effect of Chinese Medicine Danshen and Indian Ayurvedic Medicine Bark of Arjuna Tree on a Relatively New LOCI Digoxin Assay for Application on the Vista 1500 Analyzer.

Background: Danshen is a traditional Chinese medicine and bark of Arjuna tree is an Ayurvedic medicine both indicated as heart tonic. Interference of Danshen in serum digoxin immunoassays has been reported but potential interference of extract of bark of Arjuna tree has not been reported. We studied potential interferences of Danshen and bark of Arjuna tree on a relatively new LOCI digoxin assay for application on the Vista 1500 analyzer (Siemens Diagnostics).

Iloperidone-induced Galactorrhea in a Middle-aged Female.

Iloperidone, a piperidinyl-benzisoxazole derivative, is structurally related to risperidone and approved for treatment in acute stage of schizophrenia. Iloperidone is usually considered as a prolactin sparing atypical antipsychotic thereby offering treatment advantage. We aim to present the first reported case of iloperidone-induced hyperprolactinemic galactorrhea in a middle-aged female.

Etiology of anemia in primary hypothyroid subjects in a tertiary care center in Eastern India.

Introduction: The association of anemia with primary hypothyroidism has been common knowledge for many years. However; its pathogenesis is far from clear in many cases. Often the causes of anemia are manifold.

Status epilepticus as the only presentation of the neonatal Bartter syndrome.

Bartter syndrome is a rare hereditary (autosomal recessive) salt-losing tubulopathy characterized by hypokalemia, hypochloremia, metabolic alkalosis, and normal blood pressure with hyperreninemia, The underlying renal abnormality results in excessive urinary losses of sodium, chloride, and potassium. We report a case of a four-month-old infant with neonatal Bartter syndrome, who presented only with status epilepticus. To the best of our present knowledge, there is no reported case of Bartter syndrome who presented with status epilepticus.

Elevated level of carbonyl compounds correlates with insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes.

Introduction: Recent periodicals direct that reactive carbonyl compounds are formed due to existing oxidative stress in type 2 diabetes mellitus, which further nonenzymatically react with proteins and lipids to form irreversible advanced glycation end products (AGE) and advanced lipoxidation end products (ALE). In type 2 diabetes mellitus, insulin resistance plays a pivotal role in hyperglycaemia. In this study, we tried to fi nd the relation between insulin resistance and carbonyl stress.

Pyloric and antral strictures following corrosive acid ingestion: A report of four cases.

This study reports four children who developed complete stricture of pylorus and antrum of the stomach following accidental ingestion of corrosive agent (toilet cleaner).

Hospital-based perinatal outcomes and complications in teenage pregnancy in India.

Teenage pregnancy is a worldwide problem bearing serious social and medical implications relating to maternal and child health. A cross-sectional observational study was undertaken to compare the different sociodemographic characteristics and perinatal outcomes of teenage primigravida mothers with those of adult primigravida mothers in a tertiary-care hospital in eastern India. A sample of 350 each in cases and comparison group comprised the study subjects.

Klebsiella pneumoniae brain abscess in two neonates.

We report two premature infants who developed multiple brain abscesses following Klebsiella pneumoniae infection. Both the cases were diagnosed by ultrasonogram (USG) and cranial tomography. Abscess had intraventricular communication in one case.

Neo-adjuvant chemotherapy with cisplatin and short infusional 5-FU in advanced head and neck malignancies.

Background: Combination of radical surgery and radiotherapy is the standard management of head and neck malignancies. But due to considerable morbidity of surgery and associated cosmetic and functional deficiencies, often aggravated by adjuvant radiotherapy, many patients prefer only radiotherapy with its' decreased chance of survival. Proper surgical facilities are also not accessible to most of our patients.

Psychiatric disorders in medical in-patients - a study in a teaching hospital.

The rate of psychiatric morbidity in medical in-patients suffering from chronic physical illness is reported to be quite high. In this study, patients with chronic medical illness showed psychiatric morbidity at the rate of 52.5%.
