It is unclear whether the two hippocampal lobes convey similar or different activities and how they cooperate. Spatial discrimination of electric fields in anesthetized rats allowed us to compare the pathway-specific field potentials corresponding to the gamma-paced CA3 output (CA1 Schaffer potentials) and CA3 somatic inhibition within and between sides. Bilateral excitatory Schaffer gamma waves are generally larger and lead from the right hemisphere with only moderate covariation of amplitude, and drive CA1 pyramidal units more strongly than unilateral waves.

Local stimulation induces generation and propagation of electrical signals, including the variation potential (VP) and action potential, in plants. Burning-induced VP changes the physiological state of plants; specifically, it inactivates photosynthesis. However, the mechanisms that decrease photosynthesis are poorly understood.

This review summarizes current works concerning the effects of electrical signals (ESs) on photosynthesis, the mechanisms of the effects, and its physiological role in plants. Local irritations of plants induce various photosynthetic responses in intact leaves, including fast and long-term inactivation of photosynthesis, and its activation. Irritation-induced ESs, including action potential, variation potential, and system potential, probably causes the photosynthetic responses in intact leaves.

The treatment depth of existing photodynamic therapy (PDT) is limited because of the absorption of visible excitation light in biological tissue. It can be augmented by means of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) transforming deep-penetrating near-infrared (NIR) light to visible light, exciting PDT drugs. We report here a facile strategy to assemble such PDT nanocomposites functionalized for cancer targeting, based on coating of the UCNPs with a silica layer encapsulating the Rose Bengal photosensitizer and bioconjugation to antibodies through a bifunctional fusion protein consisting of a solid-binding peptide linker genetically fused to Streptococcus Protein G'.

We combined cross-polarization optical coherence tomography (CP OCT) and non-linear microscopy based on second harmonic generation (SHG) and two-photon-excited fluorescence (2PEF) to assess collagen and elastin fibers and other vascular structures in the development of atherosclerosis, including identification of vulnerable plaques, which remains an important clinical problem and imaging application. CP OCT's ability to visualize tissue birefringence and cross-scattering adds new information about the microstructure and composition of the plaque. However its interpretation can be ambiguous, because backscattering contrast may have a similar appearance to the birefringence related fringes.

Identifying the pathways contributing to local field potential (LFP) events and oscillations is essential to determine whether synchronous interregional patterns indicate functional connectivity. Here, we studied experimentally and numerically how different target structures receiving input from a common population shape their LFPs. We focused on the bilateral CA3 that sends gamma-paced excitatory packages to the bilateral CA1, the lateral septum, and itself (recurrent input).

Quantitative image analysis and parameter extraction using a specific implementation of polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (OCT) provides differential diagnosis of mucosal pathologies in in-vivo human bladders. We introduce a cross-polarization (CP) OCT image metric called Integral Depolarization Factor (IDF) to enable automatic diagnosis of bladder conditions (assessment the functional state of collagen fibers). IDF-based diagnostic accuracy of identification of the severe fibrosis of normal bladder mucosa is 79%; recurrence of carcinoma on the post-operative scar is 97%; and differentiation between neoplasia and acute inflammation is 75%.

Electrical signals [action potentials (APs) and variation potentials (VPs)] induced by local stimuli are a mechanism that underlies rapid plant response to environmental factors. Such signals induce a number of functional responses, including changes in photosynthesis. Ultimately, these responses are considered to increase plant resistance to stress factors, but this question has been poorly investigated.

We develop a method to evaluate the modulation transfer function (MTF) of a water layer from the characteristics of lidar signal backscattered by water volume. We propose several designs of a lidar system for remote measurement of the MTF and the procedure to determine optical properties of water using the measured MTF. We discuss a laser system for sea-bottom imaging that accounts for the influence of water slab on the image structure and allows for correction of image distortions caused by light scattering in water.

Recent experiments on the UV and electron beam irradiation of solid O2 reveals a series of IR features near the valence antisymmetric vibration band of O3 which are frequently interpreted as the formation of unusual On allotropes in the forms of weak complexes or covalently bound molecules. In order to elucidate the question of the nature of the irradiation products, the structure, relative energies, and vibrational frequencies of various forms of On (n = 1-6) in the singlet, triplet, and, in some cases, quintet states were studied using the CCSD(T) method up to the CCSD(T,full)/cc-pCVTZ and CCSD(T,FC)/aug-cc-pVTZ levels. The results of calculations demonstrate the existence of stable highly symmetric structures O4 (D3h), O4 (D2d), and O6 (D3d) as well as the intermolecular complexes O2·O2, O2·O3, and O3·O3 in different conformations.

The mechanisms of the initial step in chemical reaction between ozone and ethylene were studied by multireference perturbation theory methods (MRMP2, CASPT2, NEVPT2, and CIPT2) and density functional theory (OPW91, OPBE, and OTPSS functionals). Two possible reaction channels were considered: concerted addition through the symmetric transition state (Criegee mechanism) and stepwise addition by the biradical mechanism (DeMore mechanism). Predicted structures of intermediates and transition states, the energies of elementary steps, and activation barriers were reported.

We propose a network solution for memory pattern retrieval in an oscillatory network based on a context dependent Hebbian connectivity. The model is composed of three interacting layers of spiking neurons with excitatory and inhibitory synaptic connections. Information patterns are stored in the memory using a symmetric Hebbian matrix and can be retrieved in response to a definite stimulus pattern.

Electrical signals (action and variation potentials) caused by environmental stimuli induce a number of physiological responses in plants including changes in photosynthesis; however, mechanisms of these changes remain unclear. We investigated the influence of the variation potential on photosynthesis in geranium (Pelargonium zonale) under different conditions (control, low external CO₂ concentration, and actinic light absence). The variation potential caused by lamina burning induced a reduction in photosynthesis (decreases in effective quantum yields of photosystem I and II, CO₂ assimilation rate, and stomatal conductance) in unstimulated leaves under control conditions.

Action potential is considered to be one of the primary responses of a plant to action of various environmental factors. Understanding plant action potential propagation mechanisms requires experimental investigation and simulation; however, a detailed mathematical model of plant electrical signal transmission is absent. Here, the mathematical model of action potential propagation in plants has been worked out.

The reaction between molecular oxygen and two nitric oxide(II) molecules is studied with high-level ab initio wave function methods, including geometry optimizations with coupled cluster (CCSD(T,full)/cc-pCVTZ) and complete active space with second order perturbation theory levels (CASPT2/cc-pVDZ). The energy at the critical points was refined by calculations at the CCSD(T,full)/aug-cc-pCVTZ level. The controversies found in the previous theoretical studies are critically discussed and resolved.

A mathematical model of action potential (AP) in vascular plants cells has been worked out. The model takes into account actions of plasmalemma ion transport systems (K(+), Cl(-) and Ca(2+) channels; H(+)- and Ca(2+)-ATPases; 2H(+)/Cl(-) symporter; and H(+)/K(+) antiporter), changes of ion concentrations in the cell and in the extracellular space, cytoplasmic and apoplastic buffer capacities and the temperature dependence of active transport systems. The model of AP simulates a stationary level of the membrane potential and ion concentrations, generation of AP induced by electrical stimulation and gradual cooling and the impact of external Ca(2+) for AP development.

Singlet and triplet potential energy surfaces of the reaction between molecular oxygen and two nitric oxide(II) molecules were studied by quantum chemical methods (coupled cluster, CASSCF, and density functional theory: B3LYP, TPSS, VSXC, BP86, PBE, B2-PLYP, B2K-PLYP). Elementary steps involving various N2O4 isomers (cyclic, cis-cis-, cis-trans-, trans-trans-ONOONO, cis- and trans-ONONO2, O2NNO2) were considered, as well as weakly bound molecular clusters preceding formation of O2NNO2, and Coupe-type quasi-aromatic hexagonal ring intermediate NO2.O2N.
