In the surgical oncology field, the change from a past radical surgery to an organ preserving surgery is a big trend. In muscle-invasive bladder cancer treatment, neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) followed by radical cystectomy (RC) is the standard of care for muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) patients eligible for cisplatin. There is a growing interest in bladder preserving strategies after NAC because good oncologic outcome has been reported for pathologic complete response (pCR) patients after NAC, and many studies have continued to discuss whether bladder preservation treatment is possible for these patients.

Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Catholic Kwandong University of Korea College of Medicine, International ST. Mary`s Hospital, Incheon, Republic of Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • An injured posterior talofibular ligament (PTFL) is linked to chronic lateral ankle instability (CLAI), and the study introduces the PTFL cross-sectional area (PTFLCSA) as a key diagnostic parameter instead of just measuring thickness.
  • The research involved comparing 15 CLAI patients to 16 healthy individuals, finding that both PTFL thickness and cross-sectional area were significantly larger in the CLAI group, indicating a clear difference.
  • The PTFLCSA showed a higher diagnostic performance than thickness alone, with optimal cutoff values providing high sensitivity and specificity for identifying injuries related to chronic lateral ankle instability.

Management for Electrolytes Disturbances during Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy.

Electrolyte Blood Press

December 2022

Division of Nephrology, Department of Medicine, Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine, Samsung Medical Center, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Despite the lack of proven superiority in mortality compared to intermittent hemodialysis, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) is the preferred renal replacement therapy modality for critically ill patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) due to better hemodynamic stability and steady correction of electrolytes disturbances and volume overload. Multiple and complex electrolyte disorders in patients with AKI can be managed effectively with CRRT because controlled and predictable correction is feasible. Thus, CRRT has an advantage with safety over conventional hemodialysis, especially in patients with both renal dysfunction and electrolyte disorder that require a sophisticated treatment with avoidance of rapid correction.

Purpose: Various dosimeters have been proposed for skin dosimetry in electron radiotherapy. However, one main drawback of these skin dosimeters is their lack of flexibility, which could make accurate dose measurements challenging due to air gaps between a curved patient surface and dosimeter. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to suggest a novel flexible skin dosimeter based on a thin-film copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) solar cell, and to evaluate its dosimetric characteristics.

Transferability of Alzheimer Disease Polygenic Risk Score Across Populations and Its Association With Alzheimer Disease-Related Phenotypes.

JAMA Netw Open

December 2022

Department of Digital Health, Samsung Advanced Institute for Health Sciences & Technology, Sungkyunkwan University, Samsung Medical Center, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explores how effective polygenic risk scores (PRSs) for Alzheimer's disease (AD)—which compile genetic information from European ancestry—are when applied to a Korean population of 1,634 individuals, including both AD patients and cognitively healthy controls.
  • - The findings indicate that a higher PRS correlates with an increased risk of AD dementia, as well as other related conditions such as amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and earlier onset of symptoms, regardless of APOE ɛ4 genetic status.
  • - This research suggests the potential for PRS to be utilized across diverse populations, thus highlighting the need for more inclusive genetic studies beyond European ancestry to better assess genetic risks for conditions like AD in different ethnic groups
