Carotid artery stenting (CAS) has traditionally been performed using the transfemoral approach (TFA). Recently, the transradial approach (TRA) has gained attention for its lower invasiveness and reduced complication risk. This study compares outcomes between two access strategy timeframes, TFA-first and TRA-first, to evaluate how this shift influences outcomes in a real-world setting.

Pencil-beam presaturation (BeamSAT) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) produces selective magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) images of specific arteries, including the unilateral internal carotid artery (ICA-selective MRA) or vertebral artery (VA-selective MRA). We evaluate the influence of flow pattern, visualized using BeamSAT MRI, on preoperative cerebral hemodynamic status and postoperative hyperperfusion syndrome (HPS). Patients undergoing carotid artery stenting or carotid endarterectomy were categorized into two groups to evaluate flow pattern.

Article Synopsis
  • Standalone coil embolization is often ineffective for partially thrombosed intracerebral aneurysms (PTIA) due to risks of recurrence if coils migrate into the thrombus.
  • A 63-year-old male with a history of a basilar artery aneurysm underwent successful coil embolization using a Target 3D Coil, leading to complete disappearance of the aneurysm and improved nerve function after five years.
  • The design of the Target 3D Coil likely prevented migration into the thrombus, aiding in the successful resolution of the aneurysm.

Background And Objectives: Determinants of cystatin C, a novel marker of mortality in the elderly, have not been extensively studied in Asian elderly population.

Methods And Study Design: Associations of cystatin C with anthropometric, cardiometabolic, hematological, nutritional variables and inflammatory markers were examined in 159 community-living elderly Japanese women whose BMI averaged 22.6±2.

Muscle strength declines with age. However, factors that contribute to such declines are not well documented and have not been extensively studied in elderly populations of Asian origin. Correlations of grip strength with a broad range of factors associated with declines in muscle strength were examined in 202 community-living elderly Japanese women.

Background: Transthyretin (TTR), a sensitive indicator of malnutrition and inflammation, has been shown to be associated with mortality in elderly population.

Methods: We examined relationships between serum TTR and a range of risk factors for mortality in 185 free-living elderly women. Blood was drawn between breakfast and lunch.

Aims: Elevated pulse pressure (PP) has been reported to be a risk factor for type 2 diabetes in elderly patients with hypertension.

Methods: Cross-sectional relationships of PP with known risk factors for type 2 diabetes and inflammatory markers were examined in 150 elderly community-dwelling women, 79 women (52.7%) of whom had hypertension.
