Background: Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) is a genetic risk factor of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVDs). Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) is related to vascular inflammation and detected in atherosclerotic plaques. In this study we analyzed the concentration of lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)), PCSK9-Lp(a) complexes and the circulating monocyte subsets in coronary atherosclerosis. For this study, 257 patients with coronary atherosclerosis and 68 patients without stenotic atherosclerosis in the coronary, carotid and lower extremity arteries (control group) were enrolled. The monocyte subpopulations (classical CD14++CD16-, intermediate CD14++CD16+ and non-classical CD14+CD16++) were analyzed by direct immunofluorescence and flow cytometry.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe article focuses on modern views on the role and place of left ventricular ejection fraction (LV EF) in determining the status of cardiovascular patients (primarily patients with heart failure) in the algorithm for their diagnosis, treatment, and prediction of the outcome. Conclusions and recommendations on the use of LV EF in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) are the following: 1) LV EF remains a familiar and convenient instrumental indicator not so much of myocardial contractility as of hemodynamics in general. Assessment of LV EF is useful for selection and ranking of CHF patients whereas the LV EF dynamics is useful for assessing the quality of their management.

Aims: The 2019 European Society of Cardiology/European Atherosclerosis Society (ESC/EAS) dyslipidaemia guidelines recommend achievement of low-density lipoprotein cholestrol (LDL-C) goals based on an individual's risk. We aimed to evaluate the impact of guideline adoption with statin, ezetimibe, and statin plus ezetimibe fixed-dose combination (FDC) on LDL-C goal achievement and incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) across six countries.
Methods And Results: A simulation model with a five-year horizon (2020-2024) was developed based on Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation Global Burden of Disease Study database with a business-as-usual (BAU) scenario representing status quo, intervention scenario-1 representing treatment with statin and ezetimibe as separate agents, and intervention scenario-2 representing treatment with statin or statin plus ezetimibe FDC.
