We systematically reviewed experiments in the fetal lamb model of gastroschisis using PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus, seeking for standardized surgical techniques to obtain complex gastroschisis. Eligible were studies where an abdominal wall defect was surgically induced and gross anatomical findings at birth were available. The primary outcome was complex gastroschisis, defined by the presence of bowel stenosis, atresia, volvulus, perforation, and/or necrosis.

Length of hysterotomy for fetal spina bifida repair is associated with prematurity risk.

Objective: To investigate whether prenatal repair of spina bifida aperta through mini-hysterotomy results in less prematurity, as compared to standard hysterotomy, when adjusting for known prematurity risks.

Methods: We performed a bi-centric, propensity score matched, controlled study, that is, adjusting for factors earlier reported to result in premature delivery or membrane rupture, in consecutive women having prenatal repair either through stapled hysterotomy or sutured mini-hysterotomy (≤3.5 cm).

Objectives: A contributing factor to unsuccessful prenatal spina bifida aperta (SBA) repair via an open approach may be incomplete neurosurgical repair causing persistent in-utero leakage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and exposure of the fetal spinal cord to amniotic fluid. We aimed to investigate the neurostructural and neurofunctional efficacy of watertight prenatal SBA repair in a validated SBA fetal lamb model.

Objective: To assess the safety of Partial-Amniotic-Insufflation-of-heated-humidified-CO (hPACI) during fetoscopic spina bifida repair (fSB-repair).

Method: A simulated fSB-repair through an exteriorized uterus under hPACI was performed in 100-day fetal lambs (term = 145 days) under a laboratory anesthesia protocol (n = 5; group 1) which is known to induce maternal-fetal acidosis and hypercapnia. MRI images obtained as part of the presurgical assessment were re-evaluated by two independent observers, blinded to perinatal results, to assess: (1) the type and area of the defect and its anatomical level; (2) the presence of any structural central nervous system (CNS) anomaly and abnormal ventricular wall; and (3) fetal head and brain biometry.
