Purpose Of Review: Rapid increase in the prevalence of myopia has been documented worldwide. Myopia, especially high myopia, is not only an important risk factor for having open angle glaucoma (OAG), but also has a strong linking with the progression of OAG. Since myopic axial length (AXL) elongation is associated with nonglaucomatous optic nerve head (ONH) and visual field abnormalities, myopia poses a challenge in differential diagnosis of OAG.

Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker (GSS) disease is an inherited prion disease characterized by dementia, cerebellar ataxia, and painful sensory disturbances. GSS is pathologically defined by the presence of amyloid plaques comprised of prion protein predominantly localized in the cerebral cortex, cerebellar cortex, and basal ganglia, resulting from mutations in the prion protein gene. This study investigated five cases of GSS P102L [GSS caused by a leucine (L) substitution of proline (P) at position 102 of the prion protein gene] with L-dopa-resistant extrapyramidal symptoms and reduced dopamine transporter single-photon emission computed tomography (DAT-SPECT) uptake.

Mutation profiling by next-generation sequencing (NGS) has facilitated understanding of the molecular pathogenesis of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and has been incorporated into the new disease classification (International Consensus Classification; ICC) and risk classification (European LeukemiaNet [ELN] 2022; ELN2022). We compared disease subtypes between the previous disease classification (4th edition of the WHO classification; WHO-4) and the ICC in 91 patients with AML diagnosed at our institution. We also compared disease risk classifications using the previous risk classification (ELN2017) and the ELN2022.

Hemodialysis therapy is an extracorporeal circulation treatment that serves as a substitute for renal function. In Japan, patients receive this efficient four-hour treatment, three times per week, allowing them to maintain a social life nearly equivalent to that of healthy individuals. Before the treatment, two punctures are performed to establish extracorporeal circulation, and a high blood flow rate is essential to ensure efficient therapy.

Dyspnea is one of the most common and distressing symptoms in patients with cancer and noncancer advanced diseases. The Japanese Society for Palliative Medicine revised previous guidelines for the management of respiratory symptoms in patients with cancer and newly developed clinical guidelines for managing dyspnea in patients with advanced disease, based on the result of systematic reviews for each clinical question and consensus among experts. We describe the recommendations of the guidelines as well as provide insights into the reasoning behind the recommendations and their development process.

Pencil-beam presaturation (BeamSAT) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) produces selective magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) images of specific arteries, including the unilateral internal carotid artery (ICA-selective MRA) or vertebral artery (VA-selective MRA). We evaluate the influence of flow pattern, visualized using BeamSAT MRI, on preoperative cerebral hemodynamic status and postoperative hyperperfusion syndrome (HPS). Patients undergoing carotid artery stenting or carotid endarterectomy were categorized into two groups to evaluate flow pattern.

Background/aim: The clinical outcomes associated with cutaneous toxicity and changes in the renal function of patients receiving enfortumab vedotin (EV) for advanced urothelial carcinoma (UC) is unclear.
Patients And Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the relationship between clinical outcomes and EV-related cutaneous toxicity, and the influence on the renal function in 58 patients with advanced UC who received EV after the failure of platinum-based chemotherapy and immune checkpoint inhibitors from December 2021 to July 2023.
Results: There were no differences in the overall response and disease control rates between patients with any grade of EV-related cutaneous toxicity and without (p=0.
Progressive pulmonary fibrosis (PPF), defined as the worsening of various interstitial lung diseases (ILDs), currently lacks useful biomarkers. To identify novel biomarkers for early detection of patients at risk of PPF, we performed a proteomic analysis of serum extracellular vesicles (EVs). Notably, the identified candidate biomarkers were enriched for lung-derived proteins participating in fibrosis-related pathways.
