Background We aimed to investigate the association between protein intake and quadriceps quantity and quality on the paretic and non-paretic sides during rehabilitation in people with subacute stroke. Method Eighty-six people with stroke were recruited from a rehabilitation ward. We measured quadriceps muscle quantity and quality on the paretic and non-paretic sides using ultrasonography at admission and after 4weeks.

Impact of Hospital Dentistry on Patients' Food Intake Status in Convalescent Rehabilitation Ward.

Background: Treating oral problems with dentist intervention during hospitalisation may improve patients' food intake status.

Objectives: This study aimed to clarify whether convalescent rehabilitation ward inpatients in a hospital with hospital dentistry (HHD) had a better diet at discharge than those in a hospital without hospital dentistry (HNHD).

Methods: Retrospective observational study including inpatients with dental involvement in a HHD with dentists and dental hygienists and HNHD with dental hygienist and visiting dental service between 1 March and 31 August 2022.

Relationship between progressive improvement in gait ability one year after discharge and skeletal muscle characteristics of stroke survivors.

Background: The clinical importance of skeletal muscle characteristics for improving gait ability of stroke survivors is increasing. We aimed to examine the association between muscle quantity and quality at discharge and changes in gait independence at the time of 1 year after discharge in patients with stroke.

Methods: This prospective observational study included 100 patients with stroke who were admitted to a convalescent rehabilitation ward.

A novel role of helix-loop-helix transcriptional factor Bhlhe40 in osteoclast activation.

The basic helix-loop-helix transcriptional factor, Bhlhe40 has been shown as a crucial regulator of immune response, tumorigenesis, and circadian rhythms. We identified Bhlhe40 as a possible regulator of osteoclast differentiation and function by shRNA library screening and found that Bhlhe40 was required for osteoclast activation. Bhlhe40 expression was induced in bone marrow macrophages (BMMs) by RANKL, whereas the expression of its homolog Bhlhe41 was decreased in osteoclastogenesis.

Comparative study of the usefulness of adjunctive tomosynthesis in breast cancer screening by mammography and ultrasound in Japan.

Introduction: There are few studies have conducted digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) in addition to digital mammography (2DDM) and ultrasound (US) for screening. The purpose of this study is to determine the possibility of synergistic effects of DBT and US screening for Japanese.

Methods: 5023 examinations of the opportunistic screening using 2DDM and US (2D group: 2581) or 2DDM and US plus DBT (3 group: 2442) were performed at our facility from May 1, 2017 to March 31, 2019.

Background: There is a high incidence of intravesical recurrence after transurethral resection of bladder tumor for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). Intravesical instillation of bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is widely used to prevent recurrence and progression. Discovery of first-in-class inhibitors of ASH1L histone methyltransferase with anti-leukemic activity.

ASH1L histone methyltransferase plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of different diseases, including acute leukemia. While ASH1L represents an attractive drug target, developing ASH1L inhibitors is challenging, as the catalytic SET domain adapts an inactive conformation with autoinhibitory loop blocking the access to the active site. Here, by applying fragment-based screening followed by medicinal chemistry and a structure-based design, we developed first-in-class small molecule inhibitors of the ASH1L SET domain.

Efficacy and Safety of Switching Prostaglandin Analog Monotherapy to Tafluprost/Timolol Fixed-Combination Therapy.

Purpose: To assess the efficacy and safety of switching from prostaglandin analog (PGA) monotherapy to tafluprost/timolol fixed-combination (Taf/Tim) therapy.

Subjects And Methods: Patients with primary open-angle glaucoma, normal-tension glaucoma, or ocular hypertension who had received PGA monotherapy for at least 3 months were enrolled. Patients were examined at 1, 2, and 3 months after changing therapies.

Assessing the adjustability of grasping force using the iWakka in elderly individuals.

[Purpose] To ensure that elderly individuals continue performing their activities of daily living, rehabilitation specialists have focused on several intervention programs, including programs that help maintain the functionality of digits. Grasping motion, including the ability to adjust grip, both spatially and temporally, is important for the elderly to continue independent living. The iWakka is a device used to measure the adjustability of grasping force and developed in Japan in 2012.

[A Case of Advanced Malignant Melanoma of the Esophagus with Distant Metastases].

A 65-year-old woman with dysphagia visited our outpatient clinic. Esophagogastric endoscopy revealed a number of black-brown, irregularly elevated lesions covering the mucosal layer of nearly the entire esophagus. Following a series of examinations including histological examinations of the biopsies and whole body FDG-PET/CT, the patient was diagnosed with malignant melanoma primarily of the esophagus with metastasis to the distant lymph nodes, duodenum, pancreas head, and left brachial bone [cT3N3M1, StageIVb].

Gradual tapering of desmopressin leads to better outcome in nocturnal enuresis.

Background: Although desmopressin therapy is effective in treating polyuric monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (MNE), the relatively high rates of recurrence are problematic. To date, the treatment protocol on the discontinuation of oral desmopressin melt (ODM) tablet, MinirinMelt, has not been established. We tested two protocols of tapering ODM when the patients achieved full response on ODM, and compared the treatment outcomes.
