Background: Mortality in patients after carotid artery stenting (CAS), a treatment approach for atherosclerotic carotid artery stenosis, is influenced by numerous factors. This study aimed to investigate the prognostic value of the Naples prognostic score (NPS), which reflects nutritional and inflammatory status, in CAS patients.

Methods: We retrospectively included 697 patients who underwent CAS from January 2016 to December 2020 at our institute.

Background: The precise etiology of hypoplasia of the posterior mitral valve leaflet (PMVL) remains incompletely elucidated; however, it has been hypothesized to stem from genetic mutations occurring during fetal development. Herein, we present the anatomical characteristics of the mitral valve and associated cardiac pathologies in patients with hypoplastic PMVL.

Methods: This single-center retrospective study involved patients who presented between 2015 and 2021 at a tertiary healthcare facility.

Article Synopsis
  • The Intermountain Risk Score (IMRS) is a simple and inexpensive tool that predicts mortality using patient demographics and basic lab results, specifically for those with acute pulmonary edema.
  • In a study of 371 patients, the IMRS effectively stratified patients into low, moderate, and high-risk groups based on their likelihood of dying within one month or one year of hospitalization.
  • Results showed that a cutoff IMRS value of 15.5 significantly predicted mortality risk, with higher scores correlating to greater risk of death, confirming the IMRS as a reliable predictor in this medical context.

Clinical Relevance: Myopia control is a prominent area of global research, with multifocal contact lenses identified as an effective intervention for adolescents.

Background: This study aims to evaluate the visual performance and vision-related quality of life (QoL) of myopic adolescents when corrected with pupil-optimised multifocal soft contact lenses (MFSCLs) versus single-vision contact lenses (SVCLs), with each participant serving as their own control.

Methods: Thirty-five myopic adolescents, habitually wearing SVCLs and fitted with pupil-optimised MFSCL with mid-addition power, were recruited.

Unexpected consequences: A case of ketamine-induced seizure in procedural sedation.

Turk J Emerg Med

October 2024

Department of Emergency Medicine, Mus State Hospital, Mus, Türkiye.

This case report describes a 32-year-old male who underwent ketamine procedural sedation and experienced a generalized tonic-clonic seizure. Despite its rapid onset and favorable tolerance profile, this case emphasizes the potential convulsive side effects of ketamine, which is commonly used for procedural sedation. While ketamine has shown promise in treating acute pain, refractory status epilepticus, and treatment-resistant depression and schizophrenia, it is associated with side effects such as hallucinations, visual disturbances, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the intraretinal hyperreflective line (IHL), a new finding seen through optical coherence tomography (OCT) that suggests damage in the retina's layers due to various conditions.
  • Through a retrospective analysis of records from 2019 to 2023, researchers identified IHLs in 40 eyes of 38 participants, noting its connection to various retinal diseases and prior surgeries.
  • Key findings included the presence of IHL in 35% of eyes with prior vitreoretinal surgery, as well as associations with conditions like full-thickness macular holes, diabetic macular edema, and idiopathic macular telangiectasia.

Clinical Relevance: Artificial intelligence has undergone a rapid evolution and large language models (LLMs) have become promising tools for healthcare, with the ability of providing human-like responses to questions. The capabilities of these tools in addressing questions related to keratoconus (KCN) have not been previously explored.

Background: In this study, the responses were evaluated from three LLMs - ChatGPT-4, Copilot, and Gemini - to common patient questions regarding KCN.

This study aimed long-term prognostic factors for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in left main coronary artery (LMCA) disease, focusing on inflammatory parameters like Pan Immune-Inflammation Value (PIV) and Systemic Immune-Inflammation Index (SII). This retrospective, observational study involved 121 patients receiving unprotected LMCA PCI.The study's primary end point was MACE, including all-cause death, repeat revascularization and myocardial reinfarction.

Background: Sarcopenia is a progressive age-related skeletal muscle disease associated with adverse outcomes in those with cardiovascular disease. In this study, the prevalence of sarcopenia and its effect on clinical outcomes in heart failure with mildly reduced ejection fraction (HFmrEF) patients were examined.

Methods: A total of 722 patients from three centres who applied to the outpatient clinic with the diagnosis of HFmrEF between 01 January 2020 and 01 June 2021 were included in the study retrospectively.

Background: This study investigates the role of Delta Neutrophil Index (DNI), an inflammation marker, in late-onset fetal growth restriction (LO-FGR) and its prediction of composite adverse neonatal outcomes.

Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 684 pregnant women (456 with normal fetal development and 228 with LO-FGR) who delivered at Health Sciences University Etlik Zubeyde Hanim Women's Health Training and Research Hospital between January 1, 2015, and June 30, 2018. Composite adverse neonatal outcomes were defined as at least one of the following: 5th minute APGAR score < 7, respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), or neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission.

Introduction: It has been suggested that inhibin B (InhB), Anti-Müllerian hormone (Müllerian-inhibiting substance, AMH) levels, and 2D/4D finger length ratios are related to sex differences in neurodevelopmental disorders. The aim of this study is to investigate the role of InhB, AMH levels, and 2D/4D finger length ratios in male children with specific learning disorder (SLD).

Methods: The study included 38 male children diagnosed with SLD and 38 males of similar ages without SLD as the control group.
