In Germany, a remarkable increase regarding the usage of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and extracorporeal life support (ECLS) systems has been observed in recent years with approximately 3000 ECLS/ECMO implantations annually since 2015. Despite the widespread use of ECLS/ECMO, evidence-based recommendations or guidelines are still lacking regarding indications, contraindications, limitations and management of ECMO/ECLS patients. Therefore in 2015, the German Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (GSTCVS) registered the multidisciplinary S3 guideline "Use of extracorporeal circulation (ECLS/ECMO) for cardiac and circulatory failure" to develop evidence-based recommendations for ECMO/ECLS systems according to the requirements of the Association of the Scientific Medical Societies in Germany (AWMF).

Objective: The goal of this study was to investigate barriers to utilisation of cancer rehabilitation by querying a large sample of various professionals in health care with a comprehensive set of barriers.
Methods: We developed a questionnaire comprising 55 barriers to utilisation of cancer rehabilitation and administered it to four different types of medical, care and social work experts involved in the referral to cancer rehabilitation. An exploratory factor analysis was conducted and the extracted factors were ranked by mean values.

Objective: Although many findings on occupational musculoskeletal complaints are available from American and European dentists, the corresponding data from Germany are still scarce. Therefore, the aim of this study was to provide additional information on the prevalence of and risk factors for musculoskeletal disorders of the upper extremity, particularly the shoulder in this specific population.
Methods: A written survey was carried out among 600 dentists in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is an independent risk factor for the development of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), as well as for cardiovascular and renal events and all-cause mortality following surgery for AAA or thoracic aortic dissection. In addition, the incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) after any aortic surgery is particularly high, and this AKI per se is independently associated with future cardiovascular events and mortality. On the other hand, both development of AKI after surgery and the long-term evolution of kidney function differ significantly depending on the type of AAA intervention (open surgery vs.

Background: Mortality risk prediction in patients undergoing pneumonectomy for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains imperfect. Here, we aimed to assess whether sarcopenia on routine chest computed tomography (CT) independently predicts worse cancer-specific (CSS) and overall survival (OS) following pneumonectomy for NSCLC.
Methods: We included consecutive adults undergoing standard or carinal pneumonectomy for NSCLC at Massachusetts General Hospital and Heidelberg University from 2010 to 2018.

Tumor extracellular matrix (ECM) operates in a coordinated mode with cancer and stroma cells to evoke the multistep process of metastatic potential. The remodeled tumor-associated matrix provides a point for direct or complementary therapeutic targeting. Here, we cover and critically address the importance of ECM networks and their macromolecules in cancer.

microRNAs are small noncoding RNAs that regulate gene expression at the posttranscriptional level. Let-7d is a microRNA of the conserved let-7 family that is dysregulated in female malignancies including breast cancer, ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, and cervical cancer. Moreover, a dysregulation is observed in endometriosis and pregnancy-associated diseases such as preeclampsia and fetal growth restriction.

Background/aim: Heparanase (HPSE) is relevant to therapy resistance in many malignancies yet is largely unstudied in Hodgkin's lymphoma. Here, we investigated links between HPSE, cancer stem cell (CSC) features and radioresistance in KM-H2 and L428 Hodgkin's lymphoma cells.
Materials And Methods: Firstly, HPSE expression in unsorted and sorted CSCs was assessed.

The successive stages of breast cancer growth and dissemination depend on cell-autonomous factors and the communication between tumor cells and their surrounding cellular and extracellular matrix microenvironment. The cell surface heparan sulfate proteoglycan Syndecan-1 is dysregulated both in tumor cells and cells of the breast tumor stroma, indicating a potential role in the pathogenesis of this most frequent malignancy in women. Indeed, Syndecan-1 interacts with numerous ligands and receptors relevant to tumor progression, affecting processes as diverse as cancer stem cell function, cell proliferation, apoptosis, cell adhesion, migration and invasion, tumor angiogenesis, and leukocyte function in the tumor stroma.

Background: The largest German study on place of death was performed for deaths in selected regions of Westphalia in the years 2001 and 2011. In the period thereafter, provision of palliative care was regionally expanded. This upgrade included the establishment of palliative medicine consultation services (PMCS), combining general and specialized palliative care on an outpatient basis.

Syndecan-4, a predicted target of the microRNA miR-140-3p, plays an important role in multiple steps of tumor progression and is the second most abundant heparan sulfate proteoglycan produced by breast carcinoma cell lines. To investigate the potential functional relationship of miR-140-3p and syndecan-4, MDA-MB-231, SKBR3, and MCF-7 breast cancer (BC) cells were transiently transfected with pre-miR-140-3p, syndecan-4 small interfering RNAJ, or control reagents, respectively. Altered cell behavior was monitored by adhesion, migration, and invasion chamber assays.

Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and proteoglycans (PGs) are major components of the glycocalyx. The secreted GAG and CD44 ligand hyaluronic acid (HA), and the cell surface PG syndecan-1 (Sdc-1) modulate the expression and activity of cytokines, chemokines, growth factors, and adhesion molecules, acting as critical regulators of tumor cell behavior. Here, we studied the effect of Sdc-1 siRNA depletion and HA treatment on hallmark processes of cancer in breast cancer cell lines of different levels of aggressiveness.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is characterized by increased angiogenesis, metastasis, and poor survival. Dysregulation of the cell surface heparan sulfate proteoglycan and signaling co-receptor Syndecan-1 is linked to poor prognosis. To study its role in angiogenesis, we silenced Syndecan-1 in TNBC cell lines using a 3D human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) co-culture system.

Dermatomyositis (DM) is a systemic idiopathic inflammatory disease affecting skeletal muscle and skin, clinically characterized by symmetrical proximal muscle weakness and typical skin lesions. Recently, myositis-specific autoantibodies (MSA) became of utmost importance because they strongly correlate with distinct clinical manifestations and prognosis. Antibodies against transcription intermediary factor 1γ (TIF-1γ) are frequently associated with increased risk of malignancy, a specific cutaneous phenotype and limited response to therapy in adult DM patients.
