Children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder are at high risk of being bullied, but research on teaching children with autism self-protection skills for bullying situations is scant. We taught five children self-protection skills for two types of bullying (threats and unkind remarks) and consecutive bullying occurrences. We first evaluated behavioral skills training and a textual prompt to teach children to report threats of physical or material harm, provide a disapproving statement after a first unkind remark, and occupy themselves with an activity away from a bully after a second unkind remark.

Designing effective and preferred teaching practices for undergraduate students are common goals in behavior analytic training programs. A preliminary study by Nava et al. (2019) showed that undergraduate students generally rated peer-generated examples of the principles of behavior analysis as more preferred, relatable, and culturally responsive than traditional textbook examples.

For some individuals, rates of destructive behavior change in a predictable manner, irrespective of the contingencies programmed. Identifying such cyclical patterns can lead to better prediction of destructive behavior and may allow for the identification of relevant biological processes. However, identifying cyclical patterns of behavior can be difficult when using traditional methods of visual analysis.

In people with schizophrenia, anxiety is highly prevalent and related to numerous negative outcomes; unfortunately, anxiety is both underreported and understudied in schizophrenia. The current review highlights the importance and utility of assessing anxiety in schizophrenia by addressing four main questions: (1) What does anxiety look like throughout the development of schizophrenia?; (2) How do we measure anxiety in schizophrenia?; (3) What are the mechanisms underlying anxiety in schizophrenia; (4) How do we treat anxiety in schizophrenia? We also provide take-home points and propose future directions for the field. We hope this emphasis on the critical role of anxiety in schizophrenia will help researchers appropriately identify the presence of anxiety, better address these symptoms, and improve the lives of people at risk for or experiencing psychosis.

Behavior analysts typically assess and treat challenging behavior after it occurs regularly and at high severity. Although effective, this reactive approach is quite costly and resource intensive. A growing literature supports an alternative preventive approach; the first step involves conducting sensitivity tests to screen the topographies and functions of low-severity behavior evoked by establishing operations commonly included in challenging behavior research (e.

Previous research has shown that low procedural fidelity can lead to decreased effectiveness and efficiency of skill acquisition during discrete-trial instruction. Previous research has also found that procedural fidelity may be substantially lower when a supervisor is not present to observe the session. Finding a socially acceptable, effective, and efficient method to increase and maintain high levels of staff members' procedural fidelity during covert observations is critical in the clinic setting.

A conversation tool was developed by a clinician/researcher partnership to garner mental health and intimate partner violence histories from patients seeking pelvic healthcare. A 3-stage mixed measures approach with healthcare providers ( = 22) and victim service experts ( = 8) was utilized to meet study aims. The finalized conversation tool was found to have satisfactory face and content validity as well as to be feasible to implement in clinical settings based on constructs related to acceptability, practicality, demand, and implementation.

The virus infection severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) during pregnancy is a risk factor for developmental problems. Our objectives were to explore feasibility measures and verify the reliability of synchronously employing the Alberta Infant Motor Scale (AIMS) remotely in infants with prenatal exposure to SARS-CoV-2. Additionally, we explored the motor performance of these infants relative to an unexposed normative sample.

This study aimed to describe the nature of interactions between health care professionals and a young adult with autism spectrum disorder with limited speech during an inpatient stay. An observational study was conducted to describe the interactions between a young adult on the autism spectrum and 14 of his inpatient health care providers. Naturalistic video-recordings were taken, and behavioral coding was completed to measure the frequency and type of communication turns taken.

Objective: Explore the caregiver experience of communicating about differences of sex development (DSD) with their children. Evidence-based guidance regarding how, when, and what information is shared by caregivers is lacking and is needed to inform optimal information sharing strategies for this population.
Methods: Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 caregivers of children with DSD, recruited from 3 multidisciplinary DSD clinics.

Our understanding of the neurobiology underlying cognitive dysfunction in persons with cerebral palsy is very limited, especially in the neurocognitive domain of visual selective attention. This investigation utilized magnetoencephalography and an Eriksen arrow-based flanker task to quantify the dynamics underlying selective attention in a cohort of youth and adults with cerebral palsy (n = 31; age range = 9 to 47 yr) and neurotypical controls (n = 38; age range = 11 to 49 yr). The magnetoencephalography data were transformed into the time-frequency domain to identify neural oscillatory responses and imaged using a beamforming approach.

All around the world, the goal of NBS is to facilitate timely diagnosis and management to improve individual health outcomes in all newborns regardless of their place of birth, economic circumstances, ability to pay for treatment, and access to healthcare. Advances in technology to screen and treat disease have led to a rapid increase in the number of screened conditions, and innovations in genomics are expected to exponentially expand this number further.

Women are drinking alcohol as much as men for the first time in history. Women experience more health-related consequences from alcohol use disorder (AUD), like increased prevalence of alcohol-related cancers, faster progression of alcohol-related liver disease, and greater risk for relapse compared to men. Thus, sex differences in chronic alcohol use pose a substantial public health problem.
