Background: The PanaMa trial aimed to compare the efficacy of 5-fluorouracil and folinic acid (FU/FA) ± panitumumab maintenance in untreated wild-type metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) patients.

Methods: In this final phase 2 trial analysis, adult mCRC patients responding to six cycles of FU/FA, oxaliplatin and panitumumab were randomized (1:1, open-label) to maintenance of either FU/FA + panitumumab or FU/FA alone. The primary endpoint was superiority of progression-free survival of maintenance (PFS; time from random assignment to progression/death) in favour of FU/FA + panitumumab.

Objective: Long-term effects on infants of mothers with SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy are increasingly discussed in the literature. Besides potential neurodevelopment impairments after intrauterine SARS-CoV-2 exposure, there might be differences in the postnatal pediatric care of those children, like the timing of preventive medical examinations (PME) or vaccinations. In this first national long-term follow-up study of women included in the CRONOS registry, we describe maternal impressions of their child´s development and the prevalence of regulatory disorders, and we analyze the timing of PMEs and vaccinations.

Ultrasound examinations are often criticized for having higher examiner dependency compared to other imaging techniques. Compared to free-text reporting, structured reporting (SR) of head and neck sonography (HNS) achieves superior time efficiency as well as report quality. However, there are no findings concerning the influence of SR on the interrater reliability (IRR) of HNS.

Left atrial appendage volume is an independent predictor of atrial arrhythmia recurrence following cryoballoon pulmonary vein isolation in persistent atrial fibrillation.

Front Cardiovasc Med

June 2023

Heart Center Munich-Bogenhausen, Department of Cardiology and Internal Intensive Care Medicine, Munich Hospital Bogenhausen, Munich Municipal Hospital Group, Munich, Germany.

Purpose: Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) is the cornerstone of atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation in persistent AF (persAF), and cryoballoon PVI emerged as an initial ablation strategy. Symptomatic atrial arrhythmia recurrence following successful PVI in persAF is observed more frequently than in paroxysmal AF. Predictors for arrhythmia recurrence following cryoballoon PVI for persAF are not well described, and the role of left atrial appendage (LAA) anatomy is uncertain.

Electronic address:

Immune cell trafficking constitutes a fundamental component of immunological response to tissue injury, but the contribution of intrinsic RNA nucleotide modifications to this response remains elusive. We report that RNA editor ADAR2 exerts a tissue- and stress-specific regulation of endothelial responses to interleukin-6 (IL-6), which tightly controls leukocyte trafficking in IL-6-inflamed and ischemic tissues. Genetic ablation of ADAR2 from vascular endothelial cells diminished myeloid cell rolling and adhesion on vascular walls and reduced immune cell infiltration within ischemic tissues.

[Costs of potentially outpatient endoscopic procedures in cases with a 1-day hospital stay versus a longer stay].

Z Gastroenterol

May 2023

Abteilung für Gastroenterologie, Hepatologie und Endokrinologie, Robert-Bosch-Krankenhaus GmbH, Stuttgart, Germany.

Introduction: The transfer of patient care and medical interventions that was previously provided on an inpatient basis to outpatient settings is a stated goal of health politics. It is unclear to what extent costs of an endoscopic procedure and the disease severity depend on the duration of inpatient treatment. We therefore examined whether endoscopic services for cases with a one-day length of stay (VWD) are comparably expensive to cases with a longer VWD.

Nutrition care is an integral part of patient-centred medical care: a European consensus.

Med Oncol

March 2023

Writing Group, The European Union Thematic Network on Integrated Nutrition in Cancer Care (INC2), Croydon, UK.

While healthcare is becoming more patient-centred, evidence-based nutrition interventions are still not accessible to all patients with cancer. As nutrition interventions directly improve clinical and socioeconomic outcomes, patient-centred care is not complete without nutrition care. While awareness of the negative impact of malnutrition on clinical outcomes, quality of life, and functional and emotional wellbeing in cancer is growing, there is relatively poor awareness amongst patients, clinicians, policymakers, and payers that nutrition interventions -particularly those begun in the early stages of the disease course- are an effective method for improving such outcomes.
