Background: Mycobacterium chelonae is a rare cause of infective endocarditis that is difficult to diagnose and treat. After we found M chelonae in a series of patients, we aimed to investigate its role in cardiovascular prosthesis dysfunction and contamination of bioprostheses as a possible cause of infection.
Methods: In this collaborative microbiological study, we report on nine patients treated in three cardiovascular surgical departments in Germany, who were found to have M chelonae infection after receiving BioIntegral bioprostheses.

Background: Appropriate selection of double-lumen tube sizes for one-lung ventilation is crucial to prevent airway damage. Current selection methods rely on demographic factors or 2D radiography. Prediction of left bronchial diameter is indispensable for choosing the adequate tube size.

Objectives: The German CArdioSurgEry Atrial Fibrillation Registry is a prospective, multicentric registry analysing outcomes of patients undergoing surgical ablation for atrial fibrillation as concomitant or stand-alone procedures. This data sub-analysis of the German CArdioSurgEry Atrial Fibrillation Registry aims to describe the in-hospital and 1-year outcomes after concomitant surgical ablation, based on 2 different ablation approaches, epicardial and endocardial surgical ablation.
Methods: Between January 2017 and April 2020, 17 German cardiosurgical units enrolled 763 consecutive patients after concomitant surgical ablation.

Background: Knowledge of tissue and implant density is crucial in obtaining both volume and weight symmetry in unilateral breast reconstruction. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine and compare the density of abdominal and breast tissue specimens as well as of 5th generation breast implants.
Methods: Thirty-one breast tissue and 30 abdominal tissue specimens from 61 patients undergoing either mammaplasty or abdominoplasty as well as five different 5th generation breast implants were examined.

Objective: To evaluate the role of rescue surgery in complicated initially not operatively intended advanced stage lung cancer.
Materials And Methods: Retrospective analysis of 30 patients with advanced lung cancer who underwent rescue surgery for control of life-threatening, non-conservatively manageable tumor related complications like post-obstructive pneumonia, super-infected tumor necrosis or active bleeding. Study parameters included tumor stage, histology, type of resection, and patients' characteristics as well as postoperative outcomes.

Introduction: Cryoballoon ablation (CBA) aiming at pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) became a standardized atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation procedure. Life-threatening complications like cardiac tamponade exist. Intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) usage is associated with superior safety in radiofrequency ablation.

Anaemia is a risk factor for several adverse postoperative outcomes. Detailed data about the prevalence of anaemia are not available over a long time-period in Germany. In this retrospective, observational, multicentre study, patients undergoing surgery in March in 2007, 2012, 2015, 2017 and 2019 were studied.

Background: Cryoballoon ablation (CBA) for pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) is a standard in atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation but might not be enough in complex atrial arrhythmias (AA). An open three-dimensional wide-band dielectric imaging system (3D-WBDIS) has been introduced to guide CBA.
Material And Methods: Pilot study evaluating feasibility and safety of 3D-WBDIS in combination with CBA and optional radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in patients with complex AA defined as (1) history of persistent AF, (2) additional atrial tachycardia/flutter, or (3) previous left atrial ablation.

Cryoballoon ablation is established for pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) in paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF). The objective was to evaluate CBA strategy in consecutive patients with persistent AF in the initial AF ablation procedure. Prospectively, patients with symptomatic persistent AF scheduled for AF ablation all underwent cryoballoon PVI.

Background: Left atrial appendage (LAA) is a potential source of atrial fibrillation (AF) triggers.
Hypothesis: LAA morphology and dimensions are associated with AF recurrence after pulmonary vein isolation (PVI).
Methods: From cardiac computed tomography angiography (CCTA), left atrial (LA), pulmonary vein (PV), and LAA anatomy were assessed in cryoballoon ablation (CBA) patients.

Background: SARS-CoV-2 entry in human cells depends on angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, which can be upregulated by inhibitors of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS). We aimed to test our hypothesis that discontinuation of chronic treatment with ACE-inhibitors (ACEIs) or angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) mitigates the course o\f recent-onset COVID-19.
Methods: ACEI-COVID was a parallel group, randomised, controlled, open-label trial done at 35 centres in Austria and Germany.

Aim: To compare patient characteristics, safety and efficacy of catheter ablation of supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) in patients with and without structural heart disease (SHD) enrolled in the German ablation registry.
Methods And Results: From January 2007 until January 2010, a total of 12,536 patients (37.2% with known SHD) were enrolled and followed for at least one year.

Background: The best treatment for perforated colonic diverticulitis with generalized peritonitis is still under debate. Concurrent strategies are resection with primary anastomosis (PRA) with or without diverting ileostomy (DI), Hartmann's procedure (HP), laparoscopic lavage (LL) and damage control surgery (DCS). This review intends to systematically analyze the current literature on DCS.

Background: Spinal surgery has to address the challenge of a dramatic increase of the growing number of older persons. The purpose of the present study was to project the numbers of surgically treated degenerative spine disease (DSD) in Austria from 2017 until 2080 to provide potential future scenarios that the Austrian Health system might have to face.
Methods: Current numbers on demographic information from Austria as well as population projections for 2017-2080 were obtained from Statistics Austria (STAT).

Background: Pulmonary vein isolation is an established strategy for catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF). However, in a significant number of patients, a repeat procedure is mandatory due to arrhythmia recurrence. In this study, we report safety data and procedural details of patients undergoing index ablation versus repeat ablation in a registry-based real-life setting.
