Attitudes and Difficulties Associated with Benzodiazepine Discontinuation.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

November 2022

Department of Neuropsychiatry, Kyorin University School of Medicine, 6-20-2 Shinkawa, Mitaka, Tokyo 181-8611, Japan.

Long-term use of benzodiazepine receptor agonists (BZDs) may depend on clinicians' BZD discontinuation strategies. We aimed to explore differences in strategies and difficulties with BZD discontinuation between psychiatrists and non-psychiatrists and to identify factors related to difficulties with BZD discontinuation. Japanese physicians affiliated with the Japan Primary Care Association, All Japan Hospital Association, and Japanese Association of Neuro-Psychiatric Clinics were surveyed on the following items: age group, specialty (psychiatric or otherwise), preferred time to start BZD reduction after improvement in symptoms, methods used to discontinue, difficulties regarding BZD discontinuation, and reasons for the difficulties.

Adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors are promising modalities of gene therapy to address unmet medical needs. However, anti-AAV neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) hamper the vector-mediated therapeutic effect. Therefore, NAb prevalence in the target population is vital in designing clinical trials with AAV vectors.

A 39-year-old man was admitted because of cardiac arrest. Emergent coronary angiography revealed a preserved coronary blood flow; however, multiple-row detector computed tomography (MDCT) revealed that the proximal right coronary artery (RCA) was running inside the aortic wall, creating proximal stenosis without atherosclerotic changes. Surgical intervention with unroofing was performed; however, postoperative stenosis of the proximal RCA required additional coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).

Article Synopsis
  • - The study assessed the long-term effects of annual cardiovascular screening tests (ACVSTs) on asymptomatic patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) who had no prior history of cardiovascular disease (CVD).
  • - Results showed that more frequent ACVSTs led to increased use of preventative medications, improved cholesterol levels, reduced inflammation markers, and less progression of kidney dysfunction.
  • - Overall, the study suggests that continuing ACVSTs for T2DM patients can significantly lower the risk of major cardiovascular events and decrease overall mortality rates.
