Background And Aims: A recent systematic review and meta-analysis studied the effect of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) on new-onset diabetes (NOD) in adults with prediabetes having chronic kidney disease and heart failure. In light of other large randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of SGLT2i published after this meta-analysis that also reported the NOD outcome in adults with prediabetes, it is of interest to update the NOD outcome with SGLT2i.
Methods: A systemic search in the PubMed and Embase electronic database was made until March 31, 2023, using specific MeSH keywords following PRISMA protocol.

Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is an extremely rare cause of chronic liver disease (CLD) in sub-Saharan Africa-there have only been 3 reported cases of AIH in Nigeria, a country of about 200 million people. We report the first case of AIH in a male patient in Nigeria and highlight its unusual presentation. A 41-year-old man with jaundice and malaise for 3 months was referred for evaluation after investigations revealed deranged liver enzymes and a cirrhotic liver.

Background: Porto-sinusoidal vascular disorder (PSVD) is one of the common causes of portal hypertension and has overlapping features with early cirrhosis. The differentiation of PSVD from cirrhosis requires a liver biopsy, which is invasive and has potential complications. This systematic review aimed at summarizing the current evidence on the performance of noninvasive modalities for differentiating PSVD from cirrhosis.

Background: Portal hypertension in cirrhosis brings about a complex interplay in the risks of bleeding and thrombosis. It is unclear whether hospitalized patients with cirrhosis need pharmacological prophylaxis for venous thromboembolism (VTE), as it may increase the risk of bleeding. We aimed to compare the outcome of hospitalized patients with cirrhosis with and without pharmacological thromboprophylaxis.

Reports have shown the association of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) with several neuromuscular disorders. Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disease in which antibodies bind to acetyl choline receptors in the postsynaptic membrane at the neuromuscular junction. The characteristic clinical feature of the disease is weakness of the ocular muscle, bulbar muscle, and extremity muscles; when the weakness is limited to the ocular muscle only, the condition is known as ocular myasthenia gravis.

Objective: The cardiovascular (CV) and renal benefits of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) in people with type 2 diabetes are well known. However, similar beneficial effects of SGLT2i in combination with dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP4i) are unknown. It is of interest to explore a trial-level meta-analysis to fill this knowledge gap.

Open access journals (OAJ) in biomedicine are promoted to improve the reach and distribution of global health research (GHR). However, in the last 20 years, article publishing charge (APC) is attracting and publishing the vast majority of papers from high-income countries (HIC) in "oncology" journals under OAJ. This paper outlines the impediments for cancer research and publication from low-and middle-income countries (LMIC): (a) existing disparities in cancer care facilities and survival outcomes between HIC and LMIC, (b) more than 70 % of OAJ in 'oncology' subject levy APC, becoming unaffordable for scientists and clinicians from LMIC, (c) impactful OAJ in oncology engage less than 10 % of members from LMIC in editorial board or as peer reviewer, whereas two-third of cancer diagnosis and management occur in these countries.

Background: Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) may have too many peaks and valleys, making the treatment plan undeliverable. When there are too many fluency differences between adjacent pixels in the X or Y directions, the X and Y smoothing factors are utilized as weighting factors to penalize this behavior. Generally, a high degree of complexity is accompanied by many monitor units (MUs), large number of segments, small sized segments, and complex segment shapes.

Background: The diagnosis of intraparenchymal lung masses is challenging when lesions are located at sites inaccessible through bronchoscopy or endobronchial ultrasound. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided tissue acquisition (TA)-fine-needle aspiration (FNA) or fine-needle biopsy-provides a potentially useful diagnostic tool for lesions located adjacent to the esophagus. This study was conducted to analyze the diagnostic outcome and safety of EUS-guided tissue sampling of lung masses.

Intersphincteric resection (ISR) with coloanal anastomosis is an oncologically safe anus-preserving technique for very low-lying rectal cancers. Most studies focused on oncological and functional outcomes of ISR with very few evaluating long-term postoperative anorectal complications. Full-thickness prolapse of the neorectum is a relatively rare complication.
