Efficacy of nonsurgical tigecycline pleurodesis for the management of hepatic hydrothorax in patients with liver cirrhosis.

Chemical pleurodesis is one of the therapeutic tools to control hepatic hydrothorax. Tetracycline and derivatives have been widely accepted as an effective and safe treatment for the purpose, but availability is the big concern. Tigecycline is an antibiotic derivative of tetracycline, which has demonstrated to be an effective pleurodesing agent in animal models.

The effect of methyl palmitate on treatment of experimental asthma.

Objective: To determine the effects of methyl palmitate on murine model of chronic asthma.

Methods: The experimental study was conducted in the animal laboratory of DokuzEylul University, Turkey, from October to December, 2012, and comprised BALB/c mice whowere divided into four equal groups: three experimental and one control group. All groups except the control group were sensitised and challenged with ovalbumin.

Effects of multiple freezing (-18 ± 2 °C) and microwave thawing cycles on the quality changes of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax).

Sensory, chemical [pH, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), trimethylamine (TMA-N), thiobarbituric acid (TBA)] and composition (crude protein and crude lipid) analyses were carried out on whole, gutted and fillets of seabass that were frozen (-18 ± 2 °C) and thawed more than once in microwave. It was detected that the sensorial acceptability values decreased certainly for all fish samples (whole, gutted and fillets of sea bass) when compared with control group. While chemical (pH, TVB-N, TMA-N, TBA) values increased, crude protein and crude lipid values decreased after the multiple freezing and thawing cycles under microwave.

Intestinal invagination secondary to intestinal adenocarcinoma in coeliac disease.

Invagination is defined as a medical condition in which a part of the gastrointestinal tract has entered into another section. Intestinal invagination is a rare clinical entity among adults and there is an underlying structural lesion in most of the cases. Coeliac disease is considered as a risk factor for intestinal invagination, because of the associated inflammatory processes and motility disorders as well as the increased risk for secondary malignancies.

Evaluation of electronic prescription implications in Turkey: an investigation of the perceptions of physicians.

Background: Electronic prescribing (e-prescribing) is an evolving area of healthcare information technology that aims to support physician decision-making by capturing, reviewing, and issuing medical prescriptions with high potential for improving the quality and safety of the process.

Purpose: To describe physician perception of e-prescription use in healthcare organizations that work with social security and to evaluate their infrastructures for MEDULA (an information system for billing and other health informatics) in healthcare organizations in Turkey.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey design was used for this study.

Correlation between hippocampal sulcus width and severity of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) severity and the hippocampal sulcus width in a cohort of subjects with OSAS and controls. A total of 149 OSAS patients and 60 nonapneic controls were included in the study. Overnight polysomnograpy was performed in all patients.

Association of SNAP-25 Gene Ddel and Mnll Polymorphisms with Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Objective: The synaptosomal-associated protein of 25 kDa (SNAP-25) gene is a presynaptic plasma membrane protein and an integral component of the vesicle docking and fusion machinery mediating secretion of neurotransmitters. Previously, several studies reported association between SNAP-25 and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We investigated whether these SNAP-25 polymorphisms (MnlI T/G and DdelI T/C) were also associated with ADHD in the Turkish population.

Background: The use of cold nasal packs on the nose and nape of the neck is currently recommended for patients with epistaxis as this is thought to induce reflex nasal vasoconstriction, which decreases the bleeding. There have been a few investigations on the effect of cold compress application to the nose, but none of these focused specifically on nasal cooling of the skin of the nose.

Arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia (ARVD) is a progressive condition with the right ventricular myocardium being replaced by fibrofatty tissue. It is a hereditary disorder mostly caused by desmosome gene mutations. The prevalence of arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy is about 1/1000-5000.

Relation between abdominal subcutaneous fat tissue thickness and inflammatory markers during pregnancy.

Introduction: Subcutaneous abdominal fat thickness (SCFT) is important for predisposition to metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. Our aim was to evaluate maternal SCFT and metabolic changes (such as insulin resistance and high inflammatory markers) during pregnancy.

Material And Methods: A total of 92 pregnant women between 24-28 weeks of gestation were enrolled in the study.

Determination of the effects on learning and memory performance and related gene expressions of clothianidin in rat models.

Clothianidin (CLO) is one of the pesticides used to protect against insects, and its potential toxic effects on cognitive functions are not clearly known. This study aims to evaluate the possible effects of dose-dependent CLO on learning and memory in infant and adult male rats and the expression of related genes in the hippocampus. Doses of 2, 8 and 24 mg/kg of CLO were administered to newborn infant and adult albino Winstar rats in the form of gavage and dissolved in vehicle matter.

Radioiodine uptake in an ovarian mature teratoma detected with SPECT/CT.

A 28-year-old woman underwent a near-total thyroidectomy for papillary carcinoma. Before radioiodine therapy, the serum thyroid-stimulating hormone level was 50 μIU/mL, the thyroglobulin level was 1 μg/L, and the antithyroglobulin was negative. She received 100 mCi of I for ablation of residual thyroid tissue.

N-acetylcycsteine attenuates the deleterious effects of radiation therapy on inci-sional wound healing in rats.

Background: During preoperative radiotherapy, effective doses of ionizing radiation occasionally cause wound complications after subsequent surgery. This study was designed to determine the effects of intraperitoneally or orally administered N-acetylcysteine (NAC) on anastomotic healing of irradiated rats.

Material & Methods: Forty Wistar albino rats were randomized into four groups containing 10 rats each.

Can we reduce secondary surgical interventions and length of hospitalization in percutaneous nephrolithotomy?

Purpose: To evaluate the success and complication rates of percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL) operations and to determine the effect of postoperative late removal of an open-end ureter catheter on hospital stay and on secondary interventions.

Materials And Methods: The records of 198 patients (97 female, 101 male) who had PNL between May 2009 and February 2012 were retrospectively reviewed. The open-end ureter catheter which was placed during the operation was removed at the end of the operation in the first 53 patients ( group 1) and 12 hours after the nephrostomy catheter in 145 patients ( group 2).

Do cigarette smoke and vitamin E affect the development of endometrial pinopods? An animal study.

Objectives: To study the effects of cigarette smoke and vitamin E on the development of endometrial pinopods.

Study Design: Eighteen female and 12 male Swiss albino mice, 12-14 weeks old, with a mean weight of 25g (standard deviation 5g) were used in this study. Female mice were divided into three equal groups.

A thalassaemia intermedia case with concomitant left atrial thrombus.

Although marked improvements have been observed in the life expectancy of patients with thalassaemia by regular blood transfusion and strict iron chelation therapies in recent years, these patients still have to deal with several complications, mainly cardiovascular. One of the life-threatening complications is the chronic hypercoagulable state and thromboembolic events which develop due to haemostatic alterations in patients with thalassaemia, although they are more frequently seen in those with thalassaemia intermedia. Many thromboembolic complications, mainly deep venous thrombosis and cerebral thrombosis, have been reported in thalassaemia.

EDTA-induced pseudothrombocytopenia in association with bladder cancer.

Pseudothrombocytopenia is the detection of low platelet counts by an autoanalyser despite lack of shortage in platelets. EDTA-induced pseudothrombocytopenia, the most frequently seen form in clinical practice, occurs mainly due to reaction of antiplatelet antibodies. Pseudothrombocytopenia is not only seen in healthy individuals but it is also reported in association with autoimmune, cardiovascular and liver parenchyma diseases and malignancy.

Introduction: Adrenal incidentalomas (AIs) have been associated with an increased incidence of several cardiovascular risk factors. The aim of this study was to investigate plasma adiponectin, leptin, resistin, homocysteine, high sensitive C-reactive protein levels, and carotid intima media thickness (CIMT) in patients with non-functioning AI (NFAI).

In the first part, paraoxonase (PON) activities were determined in the serum samples of 50 patients with Behcet's disease and 20 healthy people.
