Purpose: To evaluate the role of Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenzae, Serratia marcescens, and Moraxella catarrhalis in the nasal and ocular surface flora, along with their metabolic activities in children with unilateral congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (CNLDO).

Methods: Swabs were taken from the bilateral inferior meatus and ocular surface of 26 children with unilateral CNLDO before probing. Nasal and ocular surface swabs from non-operated eyes of children who underwent unilateral blepharoptosis or strabismus surgery formed the control group.

December 2024

Department of Medical Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine, Mugla Sitki Kocman University, Mugla, Turkey.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has gained considerable attention in cancer treatment due to its non-invasive nature and the ability of photosensitizers to generate reactive oxygen species upon light activation, leading to tumor destruction. Glutathione S-transferase P1 (GSTP1) is a key enzyme in chemotherapy resistance, often overexpressed in various cancers, and its inhibition of GSTP1 presents a promising strategy to enhance cancer treatment. This study is aimed at assessing the potential of prominent photosensitizers as GSTP1 inhibitors through molecular docking analysis to strengthen the efficacy of PDT.

Introduction: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is defined as glucose intolerance during pregnancy. We aimed to investigate the potential effects of betatrophin and ApoC2 in GDM, focusing on their roles in LPL (lipoprotein lipase) regulation and their relationship with hPL to elucidate the possible impact of hPL on lipid metabolism and its potential contribution to the development of GDM.

Methods: Thirty pregnant women with normal glucose tolerance and 29 with gestational diabetes mellitus (diagnosed by 75g OGTT between 24 and 28 weeks) were included in the study.

This study investigates disruptions in functional brain networks in Parkinson's Disease (PD), using advanced modeling and machine learning. Functional networks were constructed using the Nonlinear Autoregressive Distributed Lag (NARDL) model, which captures nonlinear and asymmetric dependencies between regions of interest (ROIs). Key network metrics and information-theoretic measures were extracted to classify PD patients and healthy controls (HC), using deep learning models, with explainability methods employed to identify influential features.

Genes involved in lipid metabolism have been considered potential therapeutic targets in lung cancer because lipid metabolism is severely disrupted in this cancer. Monoglyceride lipase (MGLL) is a lipolytic enzyme that converts monoacylglycerides to fatty acids and glycerol. MicroRNAs (miRNA), one of the most important epigenetic regulators of gene expression, are also considered potential biomarkers in diagnosing, treating, and prognosis lung cancer.

Investigating the P53-dependent anti-cancer effect of ibutamoren in human cancer cell lines.

Basic Clin Pharmacol Toxicol

January 2025

Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences, Mugla Sitki Kocman University, Mugla, Turkey.

The MDM2-p53 pathway plays a pivotal role in regulating cell cycle and apoptosis, with its dysfunction contributing to approximately 50% of human malignancies. MDM2, an E3 ubiquitin ligase, targets the tumour suppressor p53 for degradation, thereby promoting uncontrolled cell growth in cancers. Inhibiting the MDM2-p53 interaction represents a promising therapeutic strategy for reactivating p53's tumour-suppressive functions.

Background: Numerous cognitive impairments have been documented in patients with epilepsy, particularly in relation to memory and executive functions. However, research on time perception is relatively limited and primarily focuses on temporal lobe epilepsy. The current study seeks to compare time perception performance between patients with focal epilepsy and those with generalized epilepsy.

Purpose: Hand grip strength (HGS) is crucial for the performance of daily activities and has been linked to various clinical parameters, including morbidity, mortality, and both physical and cognitive functions. While HGS has been shown to decline in numerous diseases, it has not been previously examined in patients diagnosed with temporal lobe epilepsy. This study aims to investigate the differences in hand grip strength between individuals with temporal lobe epilepsy and healthy volunteers.

Article Synopsis
  • Lung cancer is a significant issue for patients with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), but there is limited research on those with non-IPF Pulmonary Fibrosis (PF); this study compares the two groups in terms of characteristics and survival.
  • The study analyzed data from 251 patients diagnosed with lung cancer between 2010 and 2022, finding that most were elderly men with a high smoking rate, and differing patterns of lung imaging between the two groups.
  • Both IPF-LC and non-IPF PF-LC patients had high 5-year mortality rates around 64%, with the shortest survival noted in non-IPF PF patients with unclassified PF.

Faculty of Science, Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Mugla Sitki Kocman University, Mugla, Turkey.

Obesity is a metabolic disorder that occurs when excess energy taken into the body is stored as fat. It is known that this metabolic imbalance affects the development of other diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, insulin resistance, and diabetes. The main cellular component of adipose tissue is adipocytes, and the environmental interactions of adipocytes are important to study the mechanism of disorder formation.
