Aims: The aim of this study was to examine the implant accuracy of custom-made partial pelvis replacements (PPRs) in revision total hip arthroplasty (rTHA). Custom-made implants offer an option to achieve a reconstruction in cases with severe acetabular bone loss. By analyzing implant deviation in CT and radiograph imaging and correlating early clinical complications, we aimed to optimize the usage of custom-made implants.

LIMB-Q Kids-German Translation and Cultural Adaptation.

Role of precipitants in transition of acute decompensation to acute-on-chronic liver failure in patients with HBV-related cirrhosis.

Background & Aims: Pre-acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) is a distinct intermediate stage between acute decompensation (AD) and ACLF. However, identifying patients with pre-ACLF and predicting progression from AD to ACLF is difficult. This study aimed to identify pre-ACLF within 28 days, and to develop and validate a prediction model for ACLF in patients with HBV-related decompensated cirrhosis.

German Translation and Cross-Cultural Adaptation of the Limb Deformity-Scoliosis Research Society (LD-SRS) Questionnaire.

Background: Patient-reported outcome measures are gaining increasing importance in clinical research and quality control. Clinical impairment through limb deformities can appear in various forms. This study aimed at translating and culturally adaptating the Limb Deformity-Scoliosis Research Society (LD-SRS) patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) into German by following the scientific rigor of the cross-cultural adaptation process as well as ensuring the reliability of the translated version.

Validation of a Modified Version of the German Sedentary Behavior Questionnaire.

Background: Physical inactivity and excessive sedentary behavior (SB) are growing public health issues that require surveillance, guidelines, and targeted interventions. In addition to a variety of sophisticated technical methods, questionnaires are still an attractive method for quick, easy, comprehensive, and cost-effective estimation of SB. The aim of this study was to validate a modified version of the widely used Sedentary Behavior Questionnaire (SBQ) compared to waist-worn accelerometers as an objective measurement.

Integrin α2 and β1 Cross-Communication with mTOR/AKT and the CDK-Cyclin Axis in Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cells.

Integrin receptors contribute to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) invasion, while AKT-mTOR signaling controls mitosis. The present study was designed to explore the links between integrins and the AKT-mTOR pathway and the CDK-Cyclin axis. HCC cell lines (HepG2, Huh7, Hep3B) were stimulated with soluble collagen or Matrigel to activate integrins, or with insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) to activate AKT-mTOR.

Establishing a framework towards monitoring HCV microelimination among men who have sex with men living with HIV in Germany: A modeling analysis.

Background: Prior to direct-acting antivirals (DAAs), HCV incidence rose among men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV infection in Germany despite high hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment rates. We establish a HCV elimination modeling framework to evaluate whether existing treatment rates can achieve the World Health Organization (WHO) incidence target among MSM living with HIV in Germany.

Methods: To evaluate progress towards HCV elimination in Germany, we adapted a previously published HCV transmission model among MSM living with diagnosed HIV.

The Na/taurocholate co-transporting polypeptide (NTCP, gene symbol ) is both a physiological bile acid transporter and the high-affinity hepatic receptor for the hepatitis B and D viruses (HBV/HDV). Virus entry via endocytosis of the virus/NTCP complex involves co-factors, but this process is not fully understood. As part of the innate immunity, interferon-induced transmembrane proteins (IFITM) 1-3 have been characterized as virus entry-restricting factors for many viruses.

Serum calprotectin: a potential biomarker to diagnose chronic prosthetic joint infection after total hip or knee arthroplasty.

The preoperative detection of prosthetic joint infection (PJI) prior to revision of total hip or knee arthroplasty is still a challenge. Serum Calprotectin (CP) is a heterodimer of two calcium-binding proteins present in the cytoplasm of neutrophils that is released in inflammatory processes and infections. The objective of this study is to determine the reliability of serum CP in the diagnosis of chronic PJI.

Measuring sedentary behavior using waist- and thigh-worn accelerometers and inclinometers - are the results comparable?

Background: Objective sensor-based quantification of sedentary behavior is an important tool for planning and evaluating interventions for excessive sedentary behavior in patients with musculoskeletal diseases. Although waist-worn accelerometers are the standard for physical activity (PA) assessment, only thigh-worn inclinometers can clearly distinguish sedentary behavior from any light PA or standing activity.

Methods: In this study, 53 adults (ages 20-85 years) wore two ActiGraph wGT3X-BT monitors, each containing an inclinometer and accelerometer (set for acquisition of slow movements in all three planes), attached to the right waist and thigh for a period of about 4 days.

Background: Unsuspected positive cultures (UPCs) may be found at the time of planned aseptic revision surgery and have previously been associated with decreased implant survival. However, reported rates vary greatly, and potential risk factors are widely unknown. This study investigates the rate of UPCs, implant survival, as well as potential risk factors for UPCs and revision.

Dual guidance structure for evaluation of patients with unclear diagnosis in centers for rare diseases (ZSE-DUO): study protocol for a controlled multi-center cohort study.

Background: In individuals suffering from a rare disease the diagnostic process and the confirmation of a final diagnosis often extends over many years. Factors contributing to delayed diagnosis include health care professionals' limited knowledge of rare diseases and frequent (co-)occurrence of mental disorders that may complicate and delay the diagnostic process. The ZSE-DUO study aims to assess the benefits of a combination of a physician focusing on somatic aspects with a mental health expert working side by side as a tandem in the diagnostic process.

CRLF1 and CLCF1 in Development, Health and Disease.

Cytokines and their receptors have a vital function in regulating various processes such as immune function, inflammation, haematopoiesis, cell growth and differentiation. The interaction between a cytokine and its specific receptor triggers intracellular signalling cascades that lead to altered gene expression in the target cell and consequent changes in its proliferation, differentiation, or activation. In this review, we highlight the role of the soluble type I cytokine receptor CRLF1 (cytokine receptor-like factor-1) and the Interleukin (IL)-6 cytokine CLCF1 (cardiotrophin-like cytokine factor 1) during development in physiological and pathological conditions with particular emphasis on Crisponi/cold-induced sweating syndrome (CS/CISS) and discuss new insights, challenges and possibilities arising from recent studies.

Repeat two-stage exchange arthroplasty for recurrent periprosthetic hip or knee infection: what are the chances for success?

Introduction: Two-stage revision is a frequently chosen approach to treat chronic periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). However, management of recurrent infection after a two-stage exchange remains debated and the outcome of a repeat two-stage procedure is unclear. This study investigates the success rates of repeat two-stage exchange arthroplasty and analyzes possible risk factors for failure.

Effectiveness of Radial Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy in Patients with Acute Low Back Pain-Randomized Controlled Trial.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of radial extracorporeal shockwave therapy (rESWT) primarily on acute lumbar back pain (aLBP), and secondarily on physical function and quality of life. This randomized, placebo-controlled, single-blinded trial with 12-week follow-up (FU) randomized 63 patients with aLBP 1:1 into two groups receiving either rESWT (intervention) or sham rESWT (placebo) with a manipulated shockwave head not delivering any shockwaves. Both, rESWT and sham procedure were carried out eight times for four weeks.

Prediction of cardiac surgery associated - acute kidney injury (CSA-AKI) by healthcare professionals and urine cell cycle arrest AKI biomarkers [TIMP-2]*[IGFBP7]: A single center prospective study (the PREDICTAKI trial).

Purpose: Cardiac surgery associated acute kidney injury (CSA-AKI) is a contributor to adverse outcomes. Preventive measures reduce AKI incidence in high risk patients, identified by biomarkers [TIMP-2]*[IGFBP7] (Nephrocheck®). This study investigate clinical AKI risk assessment by healthcare professionals and the added value of the biomarker result.

Respiratory Muscle Function Tests and Diaphragm Ultrasound Predict Nocturnal Hypoventilation in Slowly Progressive Myopathies.

In slowly progressive myopathies, diaphragm weakness early manifests through sleep-related hypoventilation as reflected by nocturnal hypercapnia. This study investigated whether daytime tests of respiratory muscle function and diaphragm ultrasound predict hypercapnia during sleep. Twenty-seven patients with genetic myopathies (myotonic dystrophy type 1 and 2, late-onset Pompe disease, facioscapulohumeral dystrophy; 48 ± 11 years) underwent overnight transcutaneous capnometry, spirometry, measurement of mouth occlusion pressures, and diaphragm ultrasound.

Spinal pathology and outcome post-THA: does segment of arthrodesis matter?

Introduction: The presence of lumbar spine arthrodesis (SA) is associated with abnormal spinopelvic characteristics and inferior outcome post total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, whether patients with upper segment SA are also at increased risk of complications is unknown. This study aims to (1) determine if upper segment SA is associated with inferior THA outcomes; (2) assess spino-pelvic characteristics; and (3) test whether static or dynamic spinopelvic characteristics correlate with outcome post-THA.

Complex Bone Tumors of the Trunk-The Role of 3D Printing and Navigation in Tumor Orthopedics: A Case Series and Review of the Literature.

The combination of 3D printing and navigation promises improvements in surgical procedures and outcomes for complex bone tumor resection of the trunk, but its features have rarely been described in the literature. Five patients with trunk tumors were surgically treated in our institution using a combination of 3D printing and navigation. The main process includes segmentation, virtual modeling and build preparation, as well as quality assessment.
