Endoscopy in Special Situations in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Acute Colitis, Pregnancy, and Pediatrics.

Gastrointest Endosc Clin N Am

January 2025

Department of Medicine, Mayo Clinic Rochester, 200 First Street SouthWest, Rochester, MN 55905, USA. Electronic address:

Endoscopy for a hospitalized patient with acute severe ulcerative colitis should be limited to flexible sigmoidoscopy. If, during pregnancy, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is active or if a new diagnosis of IBD is suspected, endoscopy may be needed to guide medical decision-making. The determination to proceed with endoscopy during pregnancy is nuanced and requires the ability to discern appropriate indications, knowledge regarding safety of bowel preparation and anesthesia.

Neuroimaging and biofluid biomarkers across race and ethnicity in older adults across the spectrum of cognition.

Ageing Res Rev

November 2024

1Florida Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (ADRC), University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, USA; Department of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, USA. Electronic address:

Neuroimaging and biofluid biomarkers provide a proxy of pathological changes for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and are useful in improving diagnosis and assessing disease progression. However, it is not clear how race/ethnicity and different prevalence of AD risks impact biomarker levels. In this narrative review, we survey studies focusing on comparing biomarker differences between non-Hispanic White American(s) (NHW), African American(s) (AA), Hispanic/Latino American(s) (HLA), and Asian American(s) with normal cognition, mild cognitive impairment, and dementia.

Whole Body Periodic Acceleration (WBPA, pGz), is a bed that moves the body headward to forward, adds pulses to the circulation inducing descent of the dicrotic notch (DN) on the pulse waveform with an increase in a/b ratio (a = the height of the pulse waveform and b = the height of the secondary wave). Since the WBPA is large, heavy, and non-portable, we engineered a portable device (Jogging Device, JD). JD simulates passive jogging and introduces pulsations to the circulation.
