Contrasting features between Tourette syndrome and secondary tic disorders.

Tics are rapid, recurrent, non-rhythmic movements or emitted sounds. Tics are the hallmark of Tourette syndrome (TS); however, a number of other disorders may be associated with tics, so-called secondary tic disorders (STD). We assessed clinical history and performed blinded evaluations of video-recordings from patients with TS and STD in order to identify features that may differentiate tics associated with TS vs STD.

A retrospective multicentric study on the effectiveness of intravenous brivaracetam in seizure clusters: Data from the Italian experience.

Objective: Nearly half of people with epilepsy (PWE) are expected to develop seizure clusters (SC), with the subsequent risk of hospitalization. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the use, effectiveness and safety of intravenous (IV) brivaracetam (BRV) in the treatment of SC.

Methods: Retrospective multicentric study of patients with SC (≥ 2 seizures/24 h) who received IV BRV.

Botulinum Neurotoxin Injections in Children with Self-Injurious Behaviors.

Self-injurious behaviors are repetitive, persistent actions directed toward one's body that threaten or cause physical harm. These behaviors are seen within a broad spectrum of neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric conditions, often associated with intellectual disability. Injuries can be severe and distressing to patients and caregivers.

The Lessebo Effect in Disease Modification Trials in Parkinson's Disease.

Background: The impact of expectation of benefit on outcomes is well established in Parkinson's disease (PD). A reduction of a treatment effect due to a perceived placebo allocation (lessebo effect) in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was documented for symptomatic treatments.

Objectives: To evaluate the lessebo effect in disease modification RCTs (DMT) in PD.

Hemiatrophy-hemiparkinsonism and Poland syndrome: A causative or coincidental association?

Despite various neurologic symptoms of Poland syndrome (PS), parkinsonism was never reported in PS, and the response to the treatment of parkinsonism was not studied before. We report a case of ipsilateral parkinsonism in PS, similar to hemiatrophy-hemiparkinsonism, with a good response to levodopa and subthalamic deep brain stimulation.

Expanded and Independent Spanish Validation of the MDS-Non Motor Rating Scale.

Background: The Movement Disorder Society-sponsored Non-motor Rating Scale (MDS-NMS) assess the severity and disability caused by non-motor symptoms (NMS) in Parkinson's disease (PD).

Objective: This article encapsulates the formal process for completing this program and the data on the first officially approved non-English version of the MDS-NMS (Spanish).

Methods: The MDS-NMS translation program involves four steps: translation and back-translation; cognitive pre-testing to ensure that raters and patients understand the scale and are comfortable with its content; field testing of the finalized version; analysis of the factor structure of the tested version against the original English language version for the nine domains that could be analyzed in a confirmatory factor analysis.

Racial and Ethnic Differences in Health-Related Quality of Life for Individuals With Parkinson Disease Across Centers of Excellence.

Background And Objectives: Racial and ethnic minorities have been underrepresented in Parkinson disease (PD) research, limiting our understanding of treatments and outcomes across all non-White groups. The goal of this research is to investigate variability in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and other outcomes in patients with PD across different races and ethnicities.

Methods: This was a retrospective, cross-sectional and longitudinal, cohort study of individuals evaluated at PD Centers of Excellence.

Peripherally-induced Movement Disorders: An Update.

Background: Peripherally-induced movement disorders (PIMD) should be considered when involuntary or abnormal movements emerge shortly after an injury to a body part. A close topographic and temporal association between peripheral injury and onset of the movement disorders is crucial to diagnosing PIMD. PIMD is under-recognized and often misdiagnosed as functional movement disorder, although both may co-exist.

Isolated Cervical Dystonia: Diagnosis and Classification.

This document presents a consensus on the diagnosis and classification of isolated cervical dystonia (iCD) with a review of proposed terminology. The International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society Dystonia Study Group convened a panel of experts to review the main clinical and diagnostic issues related to iCD and to arrive at a consensus on diagnostic criteria and classification. These criteria are intended for use in clinical research, but also may be used to guide clinical practice.

Cognitive correlates of antisaccade behaviour across multiple neurodegenerative diseases.

Oculomotor tasks generate a potential wealth of behavioural biomarkers for neurodegenerative diseases. Overlap between oculomotor and disease-impaired circuitry reveals the location and severity of disease processes via saccade parameters measured from eye movement tasks such as prosaccade and antisaccade. Existing studies typically examine few saccade parameters in single diseases, using multiple separate neuropsychological test scores to relate oculomotor behaviour to cognition; however, this approach produces inconsistent, ungeneralizable results and fails to consider the cognitive heterogeneity of these diseases.

Meningoencephalitis associated with GAD65 autoimmunity.

Background: Encephalitis has been recognized in patients with autoimmunity related to the 65-kDa isoform of glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD65) antibodies; however, patients with meningoencephalitis associated with those antibodies have been rarely identified in the medical literature. We aimed to define the frequency, clinical features, response to therapy, and functional outcomes of patients with meningoencephalitis associated with GAD antibodies.

Methods: We retrospectively studied consecutive patients attending a tertiary care center for evaluation of an autoimmune neurological disorder from January 2018 to June 2022.

Driving Impairment in Movement Disorders.

Background: Driving may be adversely affected by any movement disorder, but has been mostly studied in Parkinson's disease (PD). Few studies have addressed driving impairment in patients with Huntington's disease (HD); driving in other movement disorders such as dystonia, blepharospasm and Tourette syndrome (TS) has not been adequately evaluated.

Objectives: The aim of this review is to summarize the findings of driving impairment in movement disorders and evaluate the usefulness of clinical tools in guiding clinicians whether to refer patients for driving assessment.

Parkinson's Disease-Cognitive Rating Scale (PD-CRS): Normative Data and Mild Cognitive Impairment Assessment in Brazil.

Background: The Parkinson's Disease-Cognitive Rating Scale (PD-CRS) assesses posterior-cortical and frontal-subcortical cognitive functioning and distinguishes mild cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease (PD-MCI); however, it was not evaluated in Brazil.

Objectives: To investigate PD-CRS's reliability, validity, normative data, and accuracy for PD-MCI screening in Brazil.

Methods: The effects of age, education, and sex on PD-CRS scores were explored.

Moving Beyond Movement: Diagnosing Functional Movement Disorder.

Functional movement disorder (FMD) is a complex neuropsychiatric syndrome, encompassing abnormal movements and weakness, and is a common cause of potentially disabling neurological symptoms. It is vital to recognize that FMD is a syndrome, with nonmotor manifestations negatively affecting a patient's quality of life. This review highlights a diagnostic algorithm, where a history suggestive of FMD is combined with the presence of positive signs on examination and appropriate investigations to make the diagnosis.
