Aims/hypothesis: Metabolic abnormalities such as central obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidaemia and hypertension, often referred to as 'the metabolic syndrome' (or 'combined metabolic abnormalities'), are increasingly being identified in people living with type 1 diabetes, accelerating the risk for CVD. As a result, in recent years, treatment in people living with type 1 diabetes has shifted to improving overall metabolic health rather than glucose control alone. In Belgium, diabetes care for people living with type 1 diabetes is centrally organised.

Bilateral adrenal hemorrhage (BAH) is a rare condition that can lead to acute adrenal insufficiency and death if not recognized and treated promptly. We report the case of a 30-year-old male who presented to the emergency department with acute abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. On emergency room admission, the first abdominal CT revealed normal adrenal glands without enlargement, but with the development of hypotension and hypoglycemia, a second CT performed four days later showed enlargement due to hemorrhage in both adrenals.

Background: As the use of sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) has expanded beyond glucose-lowering therapy in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), including chronic kidney disease and heart failure, there has also been an increase in reported cases of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) associated with SGLT2i.
Case Summary: A 77-year-old woman with T2DM presented to the emergency department with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (MI) complicated by atrial fibrillation. Her medications included empagliflozin, an SGLT2i, initiated for T2DM.

Objectives: During the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic, health care access was restricted. To reduce the risk of maternal SARS-CoV-2 infection, simplified screening recommendations for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) have been suggested, leading to glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) being proposed as an alternative to the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). This study aimed to assess the optimal HbA1c cutoff to confirm GDM diagnosis according to IADPSG/WHO2013 guidelines.

Background And Aims: To study euglycemic diabetic ketoacidosis (euDKA) outcomes associated with sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) METHODS: Review of 72 euDKA cases in T2DM between September 2015 and January 2020 (PUBMED).
Results: euDKA could occur at any time during SGLT2is treatment, with nausea, abdominal pain and vomiting as main symptoms. Hyperglycemia did not correlate with pH and β-hydroxybutyrates.

Achieving good metabolic control in people with type 1 diabetes (T1D) remains a challenge, despite the evolutions in diabetes technologies over the past decade. Here we investigate the evolution of metabolic control in people with T1D, where care is provided by specialized centers with access to technology, diabetes education, and regular follow-up. Data were cross-sectionally collected between 2010 and 2018 from more than 100 centers in Belgium.

Cerebral germinoma is rare. Although the imaging of the germinoma is very evocative, it's very polymorphic clinical expression is at the origin of misguided diagnosis, as illustrated in our case. We report the case of a 10-year-old girl with diabetes insipidus evolving for 12 months associated with a decrease in visual acuity.

Background: Automated insulin calculators (AICs) with carbohydrate counting (CHC) have been shown to be effective in improving glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) levels. By contrast, use of AICs without CHC, with predetermined prandial insulin doses modified according to a correction factor and modulated as a function of glycaemia, has not yet been investigated.
Methods: This comparative, retrospective, observational and non-randomized study took place over a 6-month period of routine clinical practice.
