: Persistent symptoms have been reported in up to 50% of the 27 million people with mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) every year. MRI findings are currently limited by low diagnostic and prognostic sensitivities, constraining the value of imaging in the stratification of patients following mTBI. Limbic system structures are promising brain regions in offering prognostic factors for symptom persistence following mTBI.

Clin Colon Rectal Surg

September 2024

Department of Surgery, Sunrise GME Health Consortium, Las Vegas, Nevada.

Transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS) can be utilized to manage a wide variety of rectal lesions but can be technically demanding with traditional laparoscopic equipment. Robotic platforms such as the da Vinci Single Port system can reduce the technical barriers of TAMIS and allow more complicated lesions to be addressed. Robotic TAMIS with the SP system follows similar indications for local excision of benign and malignant lesions as conventional TAMIS or even transanal endoscopic microsurgery.

Objective: To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of dehydrated human amnion/chorion membrane (DHACM) in Medicare enrolees who developed a venous leg ulcer (VLU).

Method: This economic evaluation used a four-state Markov model to simulate the disease progression of VLUs for patients receiving advanced treatment (AT) with DHACM or no advanced treatment (NAT) over a three-year time horizon from a US Medicare perspective. DHACM treatments were assessed when following parameters for use (FPFU), whereby applications were initiated 30-45 days after the initial VLU diagnosis claim, and reapplications occurred on a weekly to biweekly basis until completion of the treatment episode.

Exosomal proteins as a source of biomarkers in colon cancer-derived peritoneal carcinomatosis - A pilot study.

Proteomics Clin Appl

March 2023

Department of Basic Sciences, Center for Health Disparities & Molecular Medicine, Division of Biochemistry, Loma Linda University Medical Center, Loma Linda, California, USA.

Purpose: Peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC), metastasized from colorectal cancer (CRC), remains a highly lethal disease. Outcomes of PC is significantly influenced by the amount of intra-abdominal tumor burden and therefore diagnostic tests that facilitate earlier diagnosis could improve PC treatment and patient outcomes.

Experimental Design: Using mass-spectrometry-based proteomics, we characterized the protein features of circulating exosomes in the context of CRC PC, CRC with liver metastasis, and primary CRC limited to the colon.

Differentiating Physiology from Pathology: The Gray Zones of the Athlete's Heart.

Clin Sports Med

July 2022

Sports & Performance Cardiology Program, MedStar Health, 3333 North Calvert Street Suite 500 JPB, Baltimore, MD 21218, USA. Electronic address:

Routine vigorous exercise can lead to electrical, structural, and functional adaptations that can enhance exercise performance. There are several factors that determine the type and magnitude of exercise-induced cardiac remodeling (EICR) in trained athletes. In some athletes with pronounced cardiac remodeling, there can be an overlap in morphologic features with mild forms of cardiomyopathy creating gray zone scenarios whereby distinguishing health from disease can be difficult.

The role of the sports cardiologist has evolved into an essential component of the medical care of athletes. In addition to the improvement in health outcomes caused by reductions in cardiovascular risk, exercise results in adaptations in cardiovascular structure and function, termed exercise-induced cardiac remodeling. As diagnostic modalities have evolved over the last century, we have learned much about the healthy athletic adaptation that occurs with exercise.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a progressive disease that leads to cardiopulmonary dysfunction and right heart failure from pressure and volume overloading of the right ventricle (RV). Mechanical cardiopulmonary support has theoretical promise as a bridge to organ transplant or destination therapy for these patients. Solving the challenges of mechanical cardiopulmonary support for PH and RV failure requires its testing in a physiologically relevant animal model.
