Several reproductive factors may affect milk yield in goats. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of reproductive disorders, parity, and litter size, and their interactions on the 150-day standardized milk yield (SMY150) of low-producing dairy goats extensively raised. Carcass cuts and tissue composition were assessed in Bisaro pigs (n = 64) from two sexes (31 gilts and 33 entire males) reared until three target slaughter body-weights (BW) means: 17 kg, 32 kg, and 79 kg. Dressing percentage and backfat thickness increased whereas carcass shrinkage decreased with increasing BW. Slaughter weight affected most of the carcass cut proportions, except shoulder and thoracic regions.

Background: There is limited information in the literature concerning the feasibility of using algal extracts as natural additives for improvement of the quality and shelf-life of meat products. Hence, a Fucus vesiculosus extract (FVE) at the concentrations of 250 mg kg (FVE-250), 500 mg kg (FVE-500) and 1000 mg kg (FVE-1000) were added to pork patties with linseed oil oleogel as a fat replacer.

Results: Total polyphenol content of FVE was determined to be 20 g phloroglucinol equivalents 100 g extract.

The synthesis of hydrophilic graphene-based yolk-shell magnetic nanoparticles functionalized with copolymer pluronic F-127 (GYSMNP@PF127) is herein reported to achieve an efficient multifunctional biomedical system for mild hyperthermia and stimuli-responsive drug delivery In vitro tests revealed the extraordinary ability of GYSMNP@PF127 to act as smart stimuli-responsive multifunctional nanomedicine platform for cancer therapy, exhibiting (i) an outstanding loading capacity of 91% (w/w, representing 910 μg mg) of the chemotherapeutic drug doxorubicin, (ii) a high heating efficiency under an alternating (AC) magnetic field (intrinsic power loss ranging from 2.1-2.7 nHm kg), and (iii) a dual pH and thermal stimuli-responsive drug controlled release (46% at acidic tumour pH vs 7% at physiological pH) under AC magnetic field, in just 30 min.

The availability of powerful high-throughput genomic tools, combined with genome scans, has helped identifying genes and genetic changes responsible for environmental adaptation in many organisms, including the honeybee. Here, we resequenced 87 whole genomes of the honeybee native to Iberia and used conceptually different selection methods (Samβada, LFMM, PCAdapt, iHs) together with in sillico protein modelling to search for selection footprints along environmental gradients. We found 670 outlier SNPs, most of which associated with precipitation, longitude and latitude.

Wild native species are usually grown under severe and stressful conditions, while a special category includes halophytic species that are tolerant to high salinity levels. Several studies have reported that nature-derived antioxidants may prevent free radicals over-production and therefore control the onset and prevent the exacerbation of different kinds of diseases caused by oxidative stress and redox-derived stressors, including ageing, fundamentally by suppressing the oxidative by-products-mediated degradation. Naturally derived antioxidants exert their anti-ageing action via a panoply of signalling systems, many of which engaging reactive oxygen and nitrogen species scavenging, with the Nrf2/Keap1-ARE system and improving the many survival genes and functions (such as the pathway mTOR/Foxo/SIRT1) able to slow cellular senescence. Most of the research in this field has evaluated the regulative effects and even pathways of herbal extracts with antioxidant property in the ageing process, and various age-related disorders such as cardiovascular disease, ischaemia-reperfusion injury, coronary and myocardial circulatory perfusion, peripheral vascular resistance, and even neurodegenerative disorders are prevented plant phytochemicals often via their antioxidant potential.
