November 2024

Department of Child Studies and Social Work, Associate Professor, Social Work, Faculty of Health, Community & Education, Mount Royal University, AB, Canada. Electronic address:

Indigenous communities across Canada persist at the forefront of environmental and climate-related challenges, necessitating a concerted effort to integrate traditional Indigenous land-based knowledge and practices that inherently promote environmental protection and resilience. Using a decolonial feminist theoretical framework, this research centers on Indigenous community perspectives on the climate crisis and their land-based adaptions. Such an approach empowers Indigenous communities to reclaim agency over their narratives and shape research agendas congruent with their lived realities and aspirations.

Introduction: The high neonatal mortality rate in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) such as Nigeria has lasted for more than 30 years to date with associated nursing fatigue. Despite prominent hard work, technological improvements, and many publications released from the country since 1990, the problem has persisted, perhaps due to a lack of intervention scale-up. Could there be neglected discoveries unwittingly abandoned by Nigerian policymakers over the years, perhaps locked up in previous publications? A careful review may reveal these insights to alert policymakers, inspire researchers, and refocus in-country research efforts towards impactful directions for improving neonatal survival rates.

Blood Glucose During High Altitude Trekking in Young Healthy Adults.

High Alt Med Biol

July 2024

Neurovascular Health Laboratory, Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada.

Article Synopsis
  • A study examined how high altitude trekking affects blood glucose levels in healthy young adults, particularly focusing on continuous glucose monitoring during a two-week trek in Nepal.
  • Participants trekked 65 km from 2,860 m to 5,300 m, with glucose levels measured at various altitudes after a standardized glucose load.
  • Results showed that while fasting and 24-hour glucose levels remained stable across altitudes, post-meal glucose levels varied, indicating that while glucose regulation is mostly maintained, further research is needed on postprandial glucose responses at higher altitudes.

Building a strong public health nursing (PHN) work-force capable of advancing population health and reducing inequities is critical. Though undergraduate nursing education is expected to provide introductory knowledge and practice of PHN in Canada, this is not always sufficient to adequately prepare nursing graduates for the complexity of PHN practice. To be practice ready for the full scope of PHN roles and interventions, new baccalaureate nurses and new registered nurses in public health are required to apply PHN competencies, theory, and knowledge of nursing and public health sciences, and to practice within the mandates of provincial and territorial public health legislation.

Psychometric corrections can be crucial for obtaining valid operational results, but concerns are rising about potential overcorrections for general mental ability (GMA) validity coefficients. Our two-part study identifies a source of overprediction: using national norms rather than recent local applicant pool variance for range restriction corrections. Study 1 demonstrates increasing homogeneity in Wonderlic occupational applicant pool variance across four data time waves, suggesting they are no longer interchangeable with the general working population, a divergence attributable to a rise in education.

Queensland Centre for Olympic and Paralympic Studies, The School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences, The University of Queensland, St Lucia, QL, Australia.

Sport management leadership research has predominantly focused on leadership behaviours, particularly transformative leadership, without fully acknowledging the complex, multifaceted nature of leadership within the sports context. This perspective overlooks the reality that sports leaders operate within complex organizations and varied contexts that significantly influence their behaviours. Leadership in sports demands core capabilities in decision-making, communication, and strategic thinking, and a mindset that influences perception, decision-making, and behaviour.

Influence of hypercapnia and hypercapnic hypoxia on the heart rate response to apnea.

Physiol Rep

June 2024

Neurovascular Health Lab, Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated how increased carbon dioxide (hypercapnia) and low oxygen levels (hypoxia) during apneas affect heart rate, specifically focusing on bradycardia (slowed heart rate).
  • Researchers hypothesized that apneas with both hypercapnia and hypoxia would lead to more significant bradycardia compared to either condition alone.
  • Results showed that hypoxia was the main factor causing bradycardia, with combined hypercapnia and hypoxia leading to similar heart rate responses as hypoxia alone.

This paper employs the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) to enhance the accuracy of differential diagnosis for febrile diseases, particularly prevalent in tropical regions where misdiagnosis may have severe consequences. The migration of health workers from developing countries has resulted in frontline health workers (FHWs) using inadequate protocols for the diagnosis of complex health conditions. The study introduces an innovative AHP-based Medical Decision Support System (MDSS) incorporating disease risk factors derived from physicians' experiential knowledge to address this challenge.

Objectives: The Sherpa ethnic group living at altitude in Nepal may have experienced natural selection in response to chronic hypoxia. We have previously shown that Sherpa in Kathmandu (1400 m) possess larger spleens and a greater apnea-induced splenic contraction compared to lowland Nepalis. This may be significant for exercise capacity at altitude as the human spleen responds to stress-induced catecholamine secretion by an immediate contraction, which results in transiently elevated hemoglobin concentration ([Hb]).
