Musculoskeletal magnetic resonance imaging in the DE50-MD dog model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Neuromuscul Disord

August 2021

Comparative Neuromuscular Diseases Laboratory, Department of Clinical Sciences and Services, Royal Veterinary College, London NW1 0TU, United Kingdom. Electronic address:

The DE50-MD canine model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) has a dystrophin gene splice site mutation causing deletion of exon 50, an out-of-frame transcript and absence of dystrophin expression in striated muscles. We hypothesized that the musculoskeletal phenotype of DE50-MD dogs could be detected using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), that it would progress with age and that it would reflect those in other canine models and DMD patients. 15 DE50-MD and 10 age-matched littermate wild type (WT) male dogs underwent MRI every 3 months from 3 to 18 months of age.

September 2021

Department on Clinical Sciences and Services, Queen Mother Hospital for Animals, Royal Veterinary College, United Kingdom.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to analyze the types, treatment approaches, complications, and long-term outcomes of canine acetabular fractures, as well as the factors influencing these outcomes.
  • - A review of case records showed that most fractures occurred in the mid and caudal parts of the acetabulum, with many dogs also having concurrent injuries, and the treatment outcomes varied based on fracture location.
  • - Post-surgical neurological deficits were observed in some dogs following both surgical procedures, with conservative management showing poorer pain outcomes compared to more aggressive treatments like direct surgical repair.

Backgrounds & Aims: Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is a chronic liver disease in which autoimmune destruction of the small intrahepatic bile ducts eventually leads to cirrhosis. Many patients have inadequate response to licensed medications, motivating the search for novel therapies. Previous genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and meta-analyses (GWMA) of PBC have identified numerous risk loci for this condition, providing insight into its aetiology.

Dogs are a source of companionship and comfort for their owners, but the degree to which this might translate into real emotional and social support has not been quantified. Emotional and social support are essential to help people to get through personal crises such as bereavement. In this study we characterize the social support owners obtain from their dogs, provide evidence of how widespread this social support is amongst dog-owners, and show how social support from dogs can increase during a crisis (using the COVID-19 pandemic as an example).

Developmental venous anomalies (DVAs) are variations in the transmedullary veins required for drainage of the brain. Normally, when occurring in isolation, DVAs are not clinically significant and are therefore usually a benign diagnosis. Thus, they are most often an incidental finding unless associated with an adjacent pathology.
