Anthropogenic nitrogen (N) deposition is unequally distributed across space and time, with inputs to terrestrial ecosystems impacted by industry regulations and variations in human activity. Soil carbon (C) content normally controls the fraction of mineralized N that is nitrified (ƒ), affecting N bioavailability for plants and microbes. However, it is unknown whether N deposition has modified the relationships among soil C, net N mineralization, and net nitrification.

The prevalence of centenarians, people who lived 100 years and longer, is steadily growing in the last decades. This exceptional longevity is based on multifaceted processes influenced by a combination of intrinsic and extrinsic factors such as sex, (epi-)genetic factors, gut microbiota, cellular metabolism, exposure to oxidative stress, immune status, cardiovascular risk factors, environmental factors, and lifestyle behavior. Epidemiologically, the incidence rate of cardiovascular diseases is reduced in healthy centenarians along with late onset of age-related diseases compared with the general aged population.

Given the ubiquitous nature of love, numerous theories have been proposed to explain its existence. One such theory refers to love as a commitment device, suggesting that romantic love evolved to foster commitment between partners and enhance their reproductive success. In the present study, we investigated this hypothesis using a large-scale sample of 86,310 individual responses collected across 90 countries.

Numerous brain imaging studies have reported white matter alterations in schizophrenia, but the lipidome analysis of the corresponding tissue remains incomplete. In this study, we investigated the lipidome composition of six subcortical white matter regions corresponding to major axonal tracks in both control subjects and schizophrenia patients. All six regions exhibited a consistent pattern of quantitative lipidome alterations in schizophrenia, involving myelin-forming and mitochondria associated lipid classes.

Oshmarin & Demshin, 1972 is redescribed from the posterior intestine of tropical tortoise (Gmelin, 1789) (Testudines: Geoemydidae) from China. Some characteristic features of the male reproductive system not reported previously are now reported for the present species. These include the presence of two blind diverticula near the mid-region of the seminal vesicle and a small cuticular structure near the opening of the cloaca - which we propose to name the 'scutum.

Poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLG) nanoparticles loaded with doxorubicin have reached phase-I clinical trials for treating advanced solid tumors. This study explores cell hitchhiking, where nanoparticles associate with blood cells and investigates the impact on pharmacokinetics and tumor migration. Previous findings highlighted the early post-injection phase dominated by nonspecific nanoparticle-cell interactions and burst release.

The review presents new ideas about developmental mechanisms of amblyopia, which are currently discussed in literature. Objective evidence has accumulated that amblyopia affects both monocular and binocular functions in visual processing. Given the increasing evidence of fundamental and clinical research, it is most likely that binocular dysfunction is primary, and monocular reduction is visual acuity is secondary to this disease.

Introduction: Interproximal attachment has received much attention in modern periodontology because it is a key diagnostic and prognostic factor. Currently, we can find many articles with results of bare root coverage, but few data and studies that describe root closure and obtaining interproximal attachment at the same time.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to introduce a double-layer tunnel surgical technique for gingival papilla reconstruction and regeneration of the supraalveolar interproximal attachment.

Plastic debris in coastal environments usually undergoes weathering due to various environmental conditions. However, the weathering effects on exposed and shaded sides of the same plastics are underexplored. In this study, 1573 plastic fragments were collected from 15 coastal sites worldwide between December 2021 and December 2022, and weathering experiments were conducted outdoors.

A new high energy proton radiography facility PRIOR-II (Proton Microscope for FAIR) has been designed, constructed, and successfully commissioned at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung (Darmstadt, Germany) pushing the technical boundaries of charged particle radiography with normal conducting magnets to the limits. The setup is foreseen to become a new and powerful user facility for carrying out fundamental science experiments in the fields of plasma and shock wave physics, material science, and medical physics. It will help address several unsolved scientific challenges, which require high-speed and precise non-invasive diagnostic methods capable of probing matter with up to 100 g/cm2 areal density.

The recent detection of benzonitrile (CHCN) in the interstellar medium is one of the most fascinating discoveries in astrochemistry and molecular astrophysics. However, the mechanism of its formation in interstellar ices remains unclear. Here, we report the first evidence for the direct synthesis of benzonitrile through the radiation-induced transformations of an isolated CH···HCN complex in inert rigid media at cryogenic temperature (4.

As many proteins prioritize functionality over constancy of structure, a proteome is the shortest stave in the Liebig's barrel of cell sustainability. In this regard, both prokaryotes and eukaryotes possess abundant machinery supporting the quality of the proteome in healthy and stressful conditions. This machinery, namely chaperones, assists in folding, refolding, and the utilization of client proteins.

Sterile inflammation has been increasingly recognized as a hallmark of non-infectious kidney diseases. Induction of pro-inflammatory cytokines in injured kidney tissue promotes infiltration of immune cells serving to clear cell debris and facilitate tissue repair. However, excessive or prolonged inflammatory response has been associated with immune-mediated tissue damage, nephron loss, and development of renal fibrosis.

Synthetic intergeneric amphydiploids and genome-substituted wheat forms are an important source for transferring agronomically valuable genes from wild species into the common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genome. They can be used both in academic research and for breeding purposes as an original material for developing wheat-alien addition and substitution lines followed by translocation induction with the aid of irradiation or nonhomologous chromosome pairing.

Thevinols and their 3-O-demethylated relatives, orvinols, are derivatives of the Diels-Alder adduct of natural alkaloid thebaine with methyl vinyl ketone. Taken together, thevinols and orvinols constitute an important family of opioid receptor (OR) ligands playing an important role in both the OR mediated antinociception and OR antagonism. Herein, we disclose for the first time the antagonist activity of the N-allyl substituted orvinol derivative fluorinated within the pharmacophore associated with C(20) and its surrounding.

In this Letter, a two-term formalism for constructing protein solubility curves in thermal proteome profiling (TPP) is considered, which takes into account the efficiency of the drug-protein binding reaction. When the reaction is incomplete, this results in distortion of the otherwise sigmoidal shape of the curve after drug treatment, which is often observed in experiments. This distortion may be significant enough to disqualify the corresponding protein from the list of drug target candidates, thus negatively affecting the results of TPP data analysis.

Creatine monohydrate supplementation (CrM) is a safe and effective intervention for improving certain aspects of sport, exercise performance, and health across the lifespan. Despite its evidence-based pedigree, several questions and misconceptions about CrM remain. To initially address some of these concerns, our group published a narrative review in 2021 discussing the scientific evidence as to whether CrM leads to water retention and fat accumulation, is a steroid, causes hair loss, dehydration or muscle cramping, adversely affects renal and liver function, and if CrM is safe and/or effective for children, adolescents, biological females, and older adults.

This method is useful for genotypes of the Brassicaceae family with low responsiveness to DH technology. For such crops, it allows increasing the embryo yield several times and sometimes obtaining embryos for the first time.

Background: Earthworms are one of the most important components of temperate ecosystems and groups of soil animals globally, but data on their distribution around the world are still incomplete and uneven. Northern Eurasia is a region for which available data on earthworm distribution is extremely poor. At the same time, generations of Soviet and Russian researchers have performed extensive research and accumulated a large amount of data on the distribution of earthworms in this vast region.
