Background: Dysfunction of the glymphatic system (GS), a recently discovered brain by-product elimination system, is considered to be one of the pathophysiological mechanisms for common neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and Parkinson's disease (PD). In 2017 a new way to assess the GS was proposed - a diffusion tensor images analysis along perivascular spaces (DTI-ALPS). In our work we evaluated the DTI-ALPS index in groups of patients with AD, DLB, PD and in a comparison group of patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH).

Background: The priority problem of modern healthcare is irreversible dementia due to the steady increase in morbidity. Among irreversible dementias, Alzheimer's disease takes the first place. Most often, only with sufficiently pronounced cognitive disorders, the doctor can diagnose Alzheimer's disease, although it is obvious that the neurodegenerative process begins even before the clinical manifestations of the disease.

Background: The ε4 allele of the apolipoprotein E (APOE4+) genotype and aging synergistically contribute to the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD), but the mechanisms underlying their influence are not completely understood. The methylation of ELOVL2 DNA accounts for 70% of the variance in the aging epigenetic clock. The ELOVL2 gene is essential for synthesizing long polyunsaturated fatty acids, crucial for cell membrane integrity, inflammation modulation, and energy maintenance.

The residual risk of developing CVC in such patients is largely determined by the high thrombotic status, that is associated with hypercoagulation characteristic of DM. Hypercoagulation causes activation of both platelet and coagulation pathways, which leads to an increased susceptibility to thrombosis.

Mosaicplasty is a relatively challenging procedure used in the management of focal osteochondral lesions of the joints. Donor-site morbidity is still the main concern after mosaicplasty because it entails the harvesting of an osteochondral autograft from an otherwise healthy region to be impacted later on the weight-bearing damaged site. We describe a possible alternative to conventional mosaicplasty with subchondral bone support harvested from the iliac crest as an osteoperiosteal autograft and covered with a minced cartilage layer.

Excessive beta oscillations in the subthalamic nucleus are established as a primary electrophysiological biomarker for motor impairment in Parkinson's disease and are currently used as feedback signals in adaptive deep brain stimulation systems. However, there is still a need for optimization of stimulation parameters and the identification of optimal biomarkers that can accommodate varying patient conditions, such as ON and OFF levodopa medication. The precise boundaries of 'pathological' oscillatory ranges, associated with different aspects of motor impairment, are still not fully clarified.

Moth-eye nanostructures, known for their biological antireflective properties, are formed by a self-assembly mechanism. Understanding and replicating this mechanism on artificial surfaces open avenues for the engineering of bioinspired multifunctional nanomaterials. Analysis of corneal nanocoatings from butterflies of the genus reveals a variety of nanostructures with uniformly strong antiwetting properties accompanied by varying antireflective functionalities.

Sepsis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality, but our understanding of the mechanisms underlying survival or susceptibility is limited. Here, as pathogens often subvert host defence mechanisms, we hypothesized that this might influence the outcome of sepsis. We used microbiota analysis, faecal microbiota transplantation, antibiotic treatment and caecal metabolite analysis to show that gut-microbiota-derived tryptophan metabolites including indoles increased host survival in a mouse model of Serratia marcescens sepsis.
