Background: Insomnia is one of the most common nonmotor features of Parkinson's disease (PD). However, there are few practical guidelines for providers on how to best evaluate and treat this problem.

Methods And Findings: This review was developed to provide clinicians with a pragmatic approach to assessing and managing insomnia in PD.

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) provide clinical benefits over chemotherapy for lung cancer patients with EGFR activating mutations. Despite initial clinical responses, long-term efficacy is not possible because of acquired resistance to these therapies. We have developed EGFR TKI drug-tolerant (DT) human lung cancer cell lines as a model for de novo resistance.

Background Cardiac autonomic neuropathy is thought to cause adverse cardiovascular effects in diabetes mellitus. Pulmonary vein ganglia ( PVG ), which have been implicated in normal and abnormal heart rhythm regulation, have not been fully investigated in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D). We examined the functional and anatomical effects of T1D on PVG and studied the details of T1D-induced remodeling on the PVG structure and function.

Objective: We assessed survival, hospital length of stay (LOS), and costs of medical care for infants with lethal congenital malformations, and also examined the relationship between medical and surgical therapies and survival.

Study Design: Retrospective cohort study including infants born 1998-2009 with lethal congenital malformations, identified using a longitudinally linked maternal/infant database.

Results: The cohort included 786 infants: trisomy 18 (T18, n = 350), trisomy 13 (T13, n = 206), anencephaly (n = 125), bilateral renal agenesis (n = 53), thanatophoric dysplasia/achondrogenesis/lethal osteogenesis imperfecta (n = 38), and infants > 1 of the birth defects (n = 14).

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the neuropsychological outcomes in patients with drug-resistant mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE) who underwent preoperative Wada testing.
  • Patient records were reviewed, highlighting changes in neuropsychological function before and after surgery, with most patients achieving Engel class I/II outcomes after selective amygdalohippocampectomy.
  • Key findings show that those without Wada memory asymmetry (No-WMA) experienced declines in verbal memory but improvements in nonverbal reasoning, while those with memory asymmetry (WMA) maintained their memory and also showed cognitive improvements.

Cancer from smoking tobacco is considered dependent on mutagens, but significant molecular aspects of smoking-specific, cancer development remain unknown. We defined sets of coding regions for oncoproteins, tumor suppressor proteins, and cytoskeletal-related proteins that were compared between nonsmokers and smokers, for mutation occurrences, in the lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), head and neck squamous carcinoma (HNSC), bladder carcinoma (BLCA), and pancreatic adenocarcinoma ( PAAD) datasets from the cancer genome atlas (TCGA). We uncovered significant differences in overall mutation rates, and in mutation rates in cytoskeletal protein-related coding regions (CPCRs, including extracellular matrix protein coding regions), between nonsmokers and smokers in LUAD and HNSC (P < 0.

Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology Program, Sarcoma Oncology Program, H Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute, 12902 Magnolia Dr, FOB1, Tampa, FL, 33612, USA.

Little is known about oncology provider recommendations regarding best practices in contraception use during cancer treatment and through survivorship for adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer patients. This review examined the literature to identify related studies on contraception recommendations, counseling discussions, and methods of contraception in the AYA oncology population. A literature review was conducted using PubMed, including all peer-reviewed journals with no publication date exclusions.

Human umbilical cord blood (HUCB) cells have shown efficacy in rodent models of focal ischemia and in vitro systems that recapitulate stroke conditions. One potential mechanism of protection is through secretion of soluble factors that protect neurons and oligodendrocytes (OLs) from oxidative stress. To overcome practical issues with cellular therapies, identification of soluble factors released by HUCB and other stem cells may pave the way for treatment modalities that are safer for a larger percentage of stroke patients.
