A methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus CC398 was recovered from a wild female boar (Sus scrofa) in the north of Portugal, in 2013 (Sousa et al. 2017). Whole genome sequencing (WGS) revealed this strain carries a new variant of a mecA-containing staphylococcal chromosomal gene cassette (SCCmec) type IV with an uncommon J3 region.

In 2016 suspected reduced ivermectin (IVM) efficacy in Oesophagostomum species in pigs was reported in England. Following this initial report, APHA raised awareness amongst private pig veterinary practitioners of the need to monitor the efficacy of the worm control on pig units. In 2017 another veterinary practitioner highlighted a potential in-field lack of IVM efficacy in treating Oesophagostomum species in sows on another breeder-finisher unit.

In the present study we experimentally infected pigs with T. gondii tachyzoites, bradyzoites and oocysts in order to evaluate IgG-ELISA, nested-PCR, and qPCR for diagnosis of ocular infection. Eighteen pigs were divided into four groups: G1 (infected with 10 tissue cysts of the M4 strain (type II) at day 28, n=5), G2 (infected with 10 oocysts of the M4 strain at day 28, n=5), G3 (infected with tachyzoites of S48 strain (type 1) at day 0, n=5), and G4 (uninfected unchallenged, control group n=3).

Isolates of Bordetella parapertussis, recovered from sheep or man, were characterised by reaction with specific anti-Bordetella lipopolysaccharide monoclonal antibodies, production of filamentous haemagglutinin, fatty acid patterns, and antibiotic sensitivity. Generally, the isolates lay within one of four groups, with separation of the ovine isolates into two groups. Reactions with specific monoclonal antibodies against lipopolysaccharide separated the ovine isolates into these two groupings.
