Dietary antioxidant seleno-L-methionine protects macrophages infected with Burkholderia thailandensis.

PLoS One

October 2020

Department of Biological Sciences, Moravian College, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, United States of America.

Burkholderia pseudomallei is a facultative intracellular pathogen and the causative agent of melioidosis, a potentially life-threatening disease endemic in Southeast Asia and Northern Australia. Treatment of melioidosis is a long and costly process and the pathogen is inherently resistant to several classes of antibiotics, therefore there is a need for new treatments that can help combat the pathogen. Previous work has shown that the combination of interferon-gamma, an immune system activator, and the antibiotic ceftazidime synergistically reduced the bacterial burden of RAW 264.

Genomics is narrowing uncertainty in the phylogenetic structure for many amniote groups. For one of the most diverse and species-rich groups, the squamate reptiles (lizards, snakes, and amphisbaenians), an inverse correlation between the number of taxa and loci sampled still persists across all publications using DNA sequence data and reaching a consensus on the relationships among them has been highly problematic. In this study, we use high-throughput sequence data from 289 samples covering 75 families of squamates to address phylogenetic affinities, estimate divergence times, and characterize residual topological uncertainty in the presence of genome-scale data.

The usefulness of genomic prediction in crop and livestock breeding programs has prompted efforts to develop new and improved genomic prediction algorithms, such as artificial neural networks and gradient tree boosting. However, the performance of these algorithms has not been compared in a systematic manner using a wide range of datasets and models. Using data of 18 traits across six plant species with different marker densities and training population sizes, we compared the performance of six linear and six non-linear algorithms.

Tooth replacement in piranhas is unusual: all teeth on one side of the head are lost as a unit, then replaced simultaneously. We used histology and microCT to examine tooth-replacement modes across carnivorous piranhas and their herbivorous pacu cousins (Serrasalmidae) and then mapped replacement patterns onto a molecular phylogeny. Pacu teeth develop and are replaced in a manner like piranhas.

We present experimentally determined potential energy curves for the 10(0)[4Π] electronic state of NaCs. The 10(0)[4Π] state exhibits a double-minimum structure, resulting in a distinctive bound-free fluorescence signature. The perturbation facilitated optical-optical double resonance method was used to obtain Doppler-free excitation spectra corresponding to rovibrational transitions to the 10(0)[4Π] state.

Physical therapy (PT) students receive feedback on their professional behaviours from academic and clinical faculty. Another avenue for providing feedback to PT students is by using standardized patients (SPs). Very little research is available on the impact of SPs' specific feedback on whether, and how, PT students learn professional behaviour, and what research is available has focused on clinical competencies, communities of practice, and broad assessments of professional behaviours.

n → π* Interactions in N-Acyl Homoserine Lactone Derivatives and Their Effects on Hydrolysis Rates.

J Phys Chem A

April 2019

Department of Chemistry , Moravian College, 1200 Main Street , Bethlehem , Pennsylvania 18018 , United States.

N-Acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs) mediate population-wide behavioral changes in Gram-negative bacteria through quorum sensing (QS), a process shown to regulate virulence, biofilm formation, and other phenotypes that impact human health. AHLs have been proposed to contain an n → π* interaction that reduces the molecules' susceptibility to signal inactivation via lactone hydrolysis. In this work, seven AHL derivatives were modeled via gas-phase DFT calculations, implicit solvent DFT calculations, and MD simulations.
